Yes, usually a series of days depending on what day of the week it is and when her birthday party is.

I did. I felt I didn't want DD spending her birthday with anyone but me. I know, a little selfish!

Yes. I make sure that we plan a special day for her. No job is going to interfere with my baby's special dayChat Icon

Wow, I am surprised at the replies.

No, I would not purposefully take the day off from work. I would be sure to celebrate their birthday, but I don't think it constitues needing a day off from work. JMHOChat Icon

I have to agree.
We will definitely have a celebration that night at dinner and the closest weekend.

I don't want to start the tradition and then try to convince them that they can't take the day a few years later when they are in elementary/high school.
As a teacher, I see kids miss school because, "it's a day that ends in Y". They must be in school and years later, their work responsibilities might preclude them from taking off. Yes, it's their birthday and it's important in this house but it doesn't preclude other responsibilities. That's the message I want to send.

Not all the time. It has happened maybe once or twice. But I have to keep my days for illnesses and school events and other unplanned events.

They love going to school on their birthdays though. I send them with a treat and we make the day special regardless!Chat Icon

My DS' first was on a Saturday, but I took the day before off...but that was to clean my house to get ready for his party.

Next year his birthday is a Sunday, but the following year I don't think I will take the day off. No one ever did that when I was a kid.

I have for my daughter but only because her birthday is on Halloween and is a super busy day for us. My son's first birthday falls on Sunday so I won;t need to decide on him until next year Chat Icon

That's exactly how I feel--must be a teacher thing!

PS...I'm a SAHM now, so it's not an issue, but did not take off when I worked.

Re: Do you take off from work for your DC's birthday?

I didn't this year for her first birthday and I got stuck in the school because we had a lockdown due to a gun in the school.
I'm considering taking off next year on her birthday because this year was so traumatic!

Wow! This thought hadn’t occurred to me yet, but I just asked DH and he very matter of factly said yes. Okay, I’m sold on the idea, it will be DD’s first birthday. When she starts school I suppose we will have to reconsider this tradition, I’m assuming she’ll want to have cupcakes at school with her friends at that point anyhow.

As a teacher, I should be off for DD's birthday every year (6/28). It's pretty cool timing. Chat Icon

However, if that wasn't the case, I would not take the day, but that's bc of the profession I'm in. If it was no big deal to take a day, then I probably would!

DD's birthday is so close to Christmas, so likely I'll be off already on her b-day.

In the event that winter break hasn't started at the time of her birthday, I won't be taking her out of school for her birthday for the same reasons that Tah-wee-zah mentioned. We'll make it special no matter what.

DH and I took off for her first birthday and plan on doing it for her 2nd birthday too. We'll continue to do this until she's in school.
