We do, but way early so he doesn't get too overtired and cranky. I'm not a fan of listening to other kids scream while I eat out and I'm sure other people feel the same about mine. Chat Icon If he does start to get unmanageable we get the check and cut it short.

Re: Do you take your infants out to dinner?

When we go we go early because he is asleep by 7 pm. But yes we do. Sometimes we go to lunch on the weekends because it is easier when we are out and etc...

Do you ever go out to dinner with infants if it is past their bedtime?

Nope, we just go early now and get the early bird special all the time. Chat Icon

But yes we do bring him out to eat with us. Chat Icon

I guess I am in the minority here, but no, we do not take DS out to dinner. We never have. He has always gone to bed for the night super early (between 6 and 6:30). He is usually cranky before bed. Honestly, I don't want to make him overtired, disrupt his bedtime routine or annoy anyone in the restaurant if/when he starts up. Doing that just wouldn't be fun for me or my DH. If we want to go out to dinner, we get my mom to babysit. We do take DS out to restaurants around lunch time though.

Re: Do you take your infants out to dinner?

Allllllllllllllllllllll the time - we decided a long time ago that we wouldn't be chained to our children's temperment or routine and that they would have to learn to adapt to US, and not the other way around. Otherwise you end up spending WAY too much time inside the house, instead of living.

So yeah, I take her everywhere - sometimes she'll just fall asleep in her carseat, other times it's too stimulating and she stays awake past her normal bedtime. Either way, she's such a good baby that it doesn't make much of a difference - she rarely kvetches and if she does, all I have to do is hold her over my shoulder for a minute and she'll fall asleep that way.

Does it not interfere with their sleep schedule?

Do they get cranky from being overtired?

We've never tried it. I am hoping to eat out more. I can't cook and we literally used to eat out everyday before DS was born.

I haven't read the other responses. But normally we do this on the weekend. It's easier now that she is on regular table food. I just share with her.

It does not interfere with her sleep schedule as we go early (5:30ish) and are generally home in pleanty enough time for bed.

I also bring things to keep her entertained. Toys... books, cheerios.

Always. The moment I was healed enough from my c-section, we were out to dinner. We've never stopped since then!

Agreed! But I will say DS's bedtime isnt until 9 and he is pretty flexible so even if he is up later he doesnt get cranky! DS goes past his bed time nearly every weekend. We can usually make it to dessert without DS getting antsy. He loves going out to eat and has never been truly disrupted. Most of the time when we go out I get compliments from those sitting around us as to how well behaved he is.

DS is 2 now

Re: Do you take your infants out to dinner?

Nope, we really didn't, only b/c DD was a VERY difficult & fussy infant and it wouldn't have been enjoyable for us in the least bit Chat Icon

Yes, but not at "normal" dinnertime. If we go out to dinner with them it is usually around 5ish. If it goes too much past their bedtime (7) they start to melt down and it isn't enjoyable for anyone.

I just realized they are not infants anymore, but we've been doing this since they were around 6-7 months.

this is what we do as well!

I was going to say only a few times but just realized it was only to breakfast and it was only twice!!

We could never do it during the week because of what time I get home and I usually take the opportunity to actually cook on the weekend since I'm home.

Re: Do you take your infants out to dinner?

all the time -
his normal bedtime is 9/9:30 - so we try to not be out past that time, but if he stays up a bit later here or there it's not going to kill him - He's a pretty mellow baby

Re: Do you take your infants out to dinner?

never...

I feed Sasha dinner at 5, then she chills out-- or if it's bath night, we do that at like 5 30. Then we start her bedtime routine at 6 and it's lights out by 6 30.

She is a terrible napper so I am extremely protective of her nighttime sleep.

And honestly-- if I am going to go out for dinner, I'd rather have a babysitter and go somewhere that I don't need to worry is baby friendly and have a nice, relaxing meal. I also personally wouldn't want that much action for her before bedtime anyway so it's not for me.

When we were on vacation for 2 weeks, I hired a babysitter for 5 nights.

I will say that every baby is different and if it's before their bedtime and they can handle it, and it won't affect their sleep-- then try it if that's what you want to do.

eta-- I do take her out to lunch all the time, so she is used to restaurants. I Just choose not to screw around so close to bedtime!

I took my DD out to dinner with us all the time (and still do at 15 months old) BUT we go earlier for dinner so she's in bed at bedtime. She wouldn't be pleasant if we ate out late and tried to keep her awake. I like to stick to her nighttime routine unless we have some event we can't avoid going to at night with her.

Yes, always. from two wks on.

I never wanted to change that, not being able to get out and enjoy dinners and honestly I found it easier when they were infants then now at 2.5.

First time we took DD out to a restaurant she was 3 months old. We never took/take her out late, we always go to dinner early in order to get her home before bedtime.

We take Kaydyn out to dinner all the time....but she has a really late bedtime (around 9:30pm). We just bring lots of stuff to keep her entertained. We were always a go with the flow family. We are not really strict with schedules.

Re: Do you take your infants out to dinner?

When DS was an infant it was much easier. Now he is 6 months old and wants to sit up and play. I can't really enjoy a dinner, but then again I can't enjoy a dinner at home either- so it doesnt make that much of a difference. Chat Icon

DD just turned 2 and we take her out to dinner frequently. Granted, it was easier when she was a newborn and would sleep in the infant carrierChat Icon
But we still do go out to eat. We go to kid friendly places and we usually try to get there b/w 5:30 and 6pm.

Re: Do you take your infants out to dinner?

DD goes to bed between 7 and 730 and is usually a monster by 7 but if we do want to go to dinner with her, we go EARLY..I'm talking like 530 and it is pleasant for everyone that way. If we have to go later (with family or whatever), I make sure she takes a later afternoon nap. Seems to work well. A couple of times, we had to skip dessert or leave a little earlier than we'd like, but generally she has been very adaptable.
