Re: Do you think a lot of schooling =better salaries?

definitely not! it should, but it doesnt! As a teacher you HAVE to get your MA and then if you want any kind of decent raise you HAVE to PAY to take more classes and then you get your bump. In my district you have to wait to take 30 post grad credits and then you get your raise.

BUT, I know there are people that work hard and might not have a higher education, but do deserve a very good income.

It burns my butt though when I hear about people I went to HS and college with that I know are making more money than me now and were total screw ups then and didn't take their education any further.

Depends on the field. In my field, better schooling definitely leads to better salary

I just wanted to add that I think that there is a BIG difference in someone that has a HS diploma and someone that has a Bachlors degree but as you get in to the higher degrees....no.

More schooling doesnt = smarter!!

Chat Icon Chat Icon

well, more schooling does = more educated

Someone that attends school and furthers their education has acquired more knowledge, but you're correct in that it doesn't make you "smarter". There are some people that are extremely intelligent, but did not spend as much time as others in school. Those people deserve to be awarded for their intelligence,as do others who worked diligently for many years.

Like everyone else said- it is going to vary from industry to industry and position to position.

BUT (IMO) a college degree can only help your earning power, so I'd encourage you to go for it.

Re: Do you think a lot of schooling =better salaries?

As someone who waited a very long time to finish her BA, I can tell you from personal experience that you will never want to be in the position of not qualifying for a job you want, and can do inside out and upside down, b/c you don't have a degree. You may not see it now, but in your future it could happen - I would say it probably WILL happen.

My work has been mostly in non-profits: a non-prof publisher, and a university. Both of those sectors are really into degrees. Even the receptionist at the nonprofit publisher had a Masters.Chat Icon I used to be a career advisor for students who went to work on Wall Street, and for the "better" firms, a degree is a must, unless you know the right people or have amazing experience.

I don't think sales jobs, design, some IT jobs need a degree, but I don't think it would ever hurt.

teachers on Long Island actually make great money. Chat Icon I wish I went into high school teaching instead of college because it pays more.

ETA: DH makes a very nice salary & did not get a post- HS Degree.

I made lots of money bartending too, but I definitely make more money now having my masters. My hubby on the other hand is a HS grad and makes more money than I do!!Chat Icon He has his own business and makes a VERY nice salary, even after paying his workers.

as a teacher, i am content with my salary, but i wouldn't mind be able to receive yearly bonuses on top of raises bringing in 3 figures on my own, like other people do

ps...the only way teachers can make "great" money is if they put in the extra time and money on their own to get the raise

yeah, when you choose to work in education you know you won't get wall street bonuses, but i consider in the high $40-50,000 range starting out to be great money. let's put in this way--i have a doctorate and work in a college and wish i made what a long island public school teacher would make with my credentials. yeah, it's not a lawyer salary at one of the top firms, or a wall street banker salary, but i think it is certainly not a bad salary. i'm just saying before teachers start crying poverty know that there are plenty of professions where people need more education than a master's that pay less.

we know couples on here who are both teachers are bringing in over $120,000 NOT working summers...i think that is a pretty good combined income.

anyway, i didn't get a doctorate to make a lot of money, because i knew i didn't choose a high-paying field anyway. i didn't go to my ivy league school to make tons of money either. there are other reasons to go to school.

Re: Do you think a lot of schooling =better salaries?

I did not go into teaching to be wealthy. I knew what I was getting into and I also know that I can't do my job without a graduate degree.

In some careers WHERE you go to school can make a difference in job opportunities and in some cases it doesn't matter. I know some school districts that will jump on a teacher with a degree from Bank Street over any other school. At the same token, my sister has an Ivy League masters and my masters is from a non-Ivy League school. She and I teach in the same school. This happens in other professions too.

I think about the future and education for my children. Surely I would encourage higher education for my children, but if my child tells me they would rather learn a trade, it wouldn't matter. As long as they saw that education in that trade was a means to an end and there are no free rides.

Not in my case! I have two Master degrees and make less than my DH with his Bachelors.

But I could potentionally make more if I started my private practice.

Re: Do you think a lot of schooling =better salaries?

I think it really depends on what you go for. I have a BA and in my current field it will not increase my salary necessarily but it may open doors, since many companies want a degree these days. I am current pursuing my masters because after going back for BA I learned that without a masters I really couldnt do too much with it. So if you decide to go back, definately make sure it is in something that may lead to open doors and a higher salary.
Good luck to you.

Think long term though. You may make more now as a bartender, but what will happen later in life? Benefits? 401k/403b contributions?

As I've figured out in the last few years, college is not for everyone. You still need to choose a job that will help to provide for you as you get older and in the future. JMHO. Chat Icon

ETA: My dh has a HS diploma and makes three times as much as I do as a 7th year teacher with a masters degree.

My darling... it doesn't matter in some professions, some people never went to college and are millionaires today.......

No.

I think it depends on the field and often who you know, not what you know.

Re: Do you think a lot of schooling =better salaries?

In my case, NO.

DH has an MBA & does pretty well but I don't attribute that to his education. He is good at what he does & was doing very well before he had his MBA.

I do agree though that it does depend on your profession.

Re: Do you think a lot of schooling =better salaries?

Not all the time, but in many cases, yes!!
The only thing I would say is that sometimes more education, gets you a job that maybe a little more secure, and pay off later down the road.
