LOL, I wanted to do a spin-off. My dd goes to daycare but I didn't and neither did my brother but my brother did go to pre-k and I didn't...and I was the one asking my mom when she was going to leave on the first day of kindergarten and my brother was the one that gave her problems(crying about going to school), so i am not sure if it is ALL about being prepared.
Also I didn't even fully speak english when I started school-let alone knew how to read and do math and everything b/f I even started school & I turned out to be a great student...it is amazing to me that 2 year olds are learning to read now a days!

As someone who's kids are NOT in daycare I say yes, I would think so. They are 17 months and have been home with me/babysitter for their whole lives. I am considering entering them in PT daycare/preschool starting soon.

not in this day and age.
it's a constant debate in my mind...what to do with my son.
on the one hand, my MIL is extremely interactive with him as are my nieces...they read to him, play games with him, talk to him etc. there is no tv. no "veggings" out. I never went to day care or pre k and I did very well in school.
but, he isn't really regimented. he isn't anyplace but his home. he sleeps when he wants, eats when he wants etc. so in that sense it is vastly different.
I don't feel like I am knocking myself of the decision I made for my son to keep him home by saying that there ARE advantages to day care as pertains to the transition to school that Luce doesn't get at home.
but most children are very resilient, and I don't think there are any major long term developmental benefits to either situation.

Re: Do you think daycare kids are better prepared for preshool?
I don't know if you can really give blanket statement one way or the other. It would seem logical that yes would be the right answer but honestly my DD was never in daycare. She was home with me most of the time and my mom if I worked. She walked into preschool and never looked back. She has done amazingly well these past two years. So I think it honestly really depends on the child.

No. I don't think so. My mom never had me in daycare and I did great in preschool and elementary school. I would expect my DD to be just fine when the time comes for preschool even though she never once stepped foot in a daycare. It's not to say kids in daycare don't learn a lot but kids at home with their moms learn a lot too and I don't feel she will be any less prepared having a SAHM than a child who was in daycare. Just my opinion!
ITA! My son is home with me, I will be putting him in nursery/preschool when he turns 3...

Judging my son alone, I say No. He is not in daycare but is exposed to many classes and activities with me, and he is so smart for his age. He already knows letters, counts to 20, etc.
I agree with this. My DD has been home with me for the most part and is very advanced forher age. I was actually told by my ped that her vocabulary and sentence structure are better then his 3 1/2 year old son's.
There are too many factors for me to generalize on this one. I keep DD very active, engaged and involved in many social activities. I'm not sure in a daycare setting where the ratio is typically 4:1 they would be able to give her the same amount of one on one attention.

Unfortunately a child that didn't attend preschool would probably be at a pretty big disadvantage in kindergarten.

Re: Do you think daycare kids are better prepared for preshool?
I have to be honest...... WHAT exactly is everyone trying to get their kid ready for in preschool? PRE-school is what gets a kid "ready" for REAL school.
Not sure the need to get them ready for preschool.
BTW- I work in EI and know the bennies of pre-school, but only in the cases of kids who are at risk for learning disabilities. Typical kids are going to be just FINE whether they go to day care or pre-K.
JMHO of course.......

Academically, not necessarily but socially, yes I do think so.
DS is home with a nanny and has been in a ton of class since 6mos old and while he's very advanced academically, I am DREADING the transition to preschool in the fall because he is so attached to me/DH/nanny.

Re: Do you think daycare kids are better prepared for preshool?
For my DD it did not matter. She was home with me ( she did have some babysitters a few hours a week from time to time as I work from home) but she went straight from home to preschool and never looked back - seriously.
Also two of the most clingiest kids that started at preschool the same time had been to day care so the moms could not understand why they were so clingy.
Maybe I got lucky and DD is just an independent child but for us daycare had no impact on how she is at preschool.

Re: Do you think daycare kids are better prepared for preshool?
I guess a child who has spent time in daycare would be less likely to have the initial separation anxiety during the first week or two of school-- my DS started preschool at age 3, and while I was lucky that he didn't mind separating from me, I saw several kids really get upset the first few times.
Other than that, I don't think preschool requires any "preparation", kwim? I know my DS's preschool teacher told me she had minimal expectations of the kids when they started in September, she viewed them as blank slates who would be learning as they go throughout the school year.
I do realize there are higher expectations and standards for kindergarten though, so I do think a child who doesn't go to preschool might be at a disadvantage.

Isn't is crazy how things change with just ONE generation. I was the first in my family to go to KINDERGARTEN! My parents thought it was pointless and my siblings started in the first grade. They could read, write and do simple math at that point but only spoke in Italian, oops! LOL My brother ended up being valedictorian in that school so I guess he had no problems catching up
But now, everything is so different!

Yes I do. I think they're in more of a routine of a "school" & used to being around other kids, navigating with sharing, etc.
That's not to say another kid couldn't be prepared. I just don't know a lot of SAHMs that have a schedule of "now we do arts & crafts, then we are going to do circle time, etc"
Ditto!

Yeah, my high school BFF didn't start school till first grade either and she was valedictorian of her high school too (and a doctor now!). Nowadays, kids have to have a regimented day starting when they are babies! Things have changed!

yes some kids DO just start school in Kindergarten.
I don't personally know any but we were clearly told last year at Kindergarten orientation that all children will be brought up to speed to the best of their abilities to be ready for 1st grade.
They do not go into Kindergarten all equals even if they have gone to preschool, but the goal is that by the end of the year those that can will all be on the same page.

Re: Do you think daycare kids are better prepared for preshool?
I didn't go to pre-school as a child and entered kindergarten at 4 1/2 reading on a 1st-2nd grade level and was labeled a 'social butterfly'. So in my case I wasn't lacking any academic or social preparedness...and I don't think my daughter would either if I chose not to send her to pre-school.
While we don't have set craft time, etc...we do attend classes and we do do crafts and dance and lots of reading together. She is definitely more verbal and social than a lot of kids her age (and even slightly older). I also don't necessarily think it's all because of me and what I do with her...I do think there is a genetic predisposition that plays a role.
So for me I don't think things like this can be generalized and it's more on a kid to kid/parent to parent basis.

ITA with you in that yes, a child who is placed in preschool will fair better in Kindergarten than a child who has not attended preschool. But the OP asked if daycare kids do better in preschool than those who stay at home in which case, as I've stated, I don't believe that to be true.
I agree with the above. Preschool can help prepare for kindergarten. Do they really need to be prepared for PRESCHOOL??

so what prepares them for daycare?
I wonder though if its something that has nothing to do with the child, and if maybe the mommies get to know other mommies earlier on, it helps in general to get community and support?

I disagree with it too--I think a SAHM who has playdates and socializes with other DC could be just as well prepared as a DC in preschool. So long as they have *some* sort of interaction w/ other kids, I think most would be fine.
Honestly, before I started working F/T after college, nothing prepared ME for sitting on my @ss all day long.

Re: Do you think daycare kids are better prepared for preshool?
Honestly, no. I have had my DD in day care since she was 8 months old and now is in a full time preschool. She also attended a preschool for disabled children as a mentor student for 6 months PT two days a week for 6 months. Although I think this experience helped her with social skills since she was very shy, I see my niece who is 2 months old with a SAHM and she has the same abilities as my DD. I think it really depends on what you expose your child to.

Ditto, I'm enrolling DD in a 2 year old program in Sept bc I believe she needs it for socialization skills and it's just good for her and me it starts off as a mommy and me and slowly transitions them to a regular program

I'm not really understanding the question. Most kids that go to daycare - the daycare IS their preschool. Is the question supposed to be are they better prepared for Kindergarten?
