Do You Think It's OK For A Daycare Center To Give SMALL Candies Out To The Children In The 2 Year Old Room For V-Day TO TAKE HOME?
Not to sound ungrateful and call me neurotic, but rightfully so I believe, my DD's daycare gave out and allowed other parents to give out small candies for Valentine's Day such as chocolates, gum drops, candy hearts, etc to two-year olds:)
I am VERY anal about choking and what not and was really VERY suprised the teachers and other parents were allowed to give it out small candies to this age group.
What do you think?
EDITED TO ADD: These were all to TAKE HOME, NOT GIVEN OUT IN CLASS:)

Were they eating the candy at school without the parent's consent?

I would not trust that daycares judgement and probably leave to be honest. NO WAY, not ok.

No I do not think its okay. It actually blows my mind that my 5 year old would get hard candy in a goodie bag. Thankfully she knows she is not allowed to eat it and she gives it to me..

oh hellz no. I am PARANOID about choking too and I'd be pizzed. I don't care if my DD eats some candy at that age but the size of the candy would freak me out...something that is an obvious choking hazzard is NOT ok.!

That would not be ok with me. At that age they should have just had a "no candy" rule for the parents, that way nothing iffy would go home with the kids. My DS is going to be *5* soon and I went through the Valentine candy he got at school and removed 1 or 2 things where I was concerned about choking (small lollipops)

Do they eat them there in daycare, or are they sent home? I think it's OK if they are sent home with the understanding that parents will then allow whatever they see fit, but if it's in the daycare without consent, that's no good. DS is 1 an TBH eats gummies and chocolate (not hard candy), so I wouldn't mind.

This would not be okay with me either. It is way too risky to give children this age small candy. I would be pizzed if this was given to my child without my consent.

WOW, that extreme, huh? I TOTALLY LOVE my Daycare so for this I wouldn't LEAVE but I do have my eyebrows raised now:)
The other thing is...how about the other 9 parents who also gave out small candies as well as the teachers? I guess they would be against our discussion now on here since they must find it OK:)

Ever since that little LI girl died in daycare after choking a carrot, yes, I would be very wary of a daycare giving out such choking hazards.
That's odd that so many parents chose small candies. Very odd. Gumdrops and candy hearts? They are the worst things for a 2 year old to eat, esp not in their parents care. I think it's very poor judgement on the school and teacher's part to allow this to be given out. I don't care if parents send it in. It should not be given out to small children.
At the very least I would have a huge discussion with the teacher, the director, etc.

Most places have a consent form that you sign or don't that allows them to give out treats.
If you never signed it then I'd be annoyed

I honestly don't think it's that big of a deal, as long as the candy was sent home and not eaten in school. Then it's up to the parents to decide if the child gets it or not. I know my school says "no candy" for snack time, but they are allowed to give it to send home (like for Halloween, Valentines Day, etc..)

DD is 9 months and she got some candy in her Valentine's goodie bag too (obviously to take home). I was very happy to eat it later I don't think it's a big deal. I would be mad if they gave it to your DD without your consent, but I honestly don't think it's that big of a deal.

Re: Do You Think It's OK For A Daycare Center To Give SMALL Candies Out To The Children In The 2 Year Old Room For V-Day?
As long as they are definitely not eating it in class, I would be okay with giving out candy for v-day-since I throw half of it out when we get home. But, I have to question what parents are thinking when they buy things that could be a choking hazard. I am always concerned with that-choking is a big fear of mine.
Also-I would expect the teachers to know better than to give out hard candies themselves-they should know that it could be a choking hazard and I would worry about anything they are serving my kid.

If it were given to them as they were leaving to take home I don't see any problem with it at all.
If it were given to them during the day while they were there to eat I would NOT be happy about it and would talk to someone there about it.

If they are sent home, I think it's fine. You can use your judgment and discard whatever you don't wish your child to have.

Re: Do You Think It's OK For A Daycare Center To Give SMALL Candies Out To The Children In The 2 Year Old Room For V-Day TO TAKE HOME?
wouldn't bother me. i'm the parent--i decide if they eat it or not. since it wasn't eaten in daycare, i wouldn't have a problem with it.
DS brought home a goodie bag of treats from preschool--i didn't think twice about it. i threw out what i didn't want him to have and split the rest between him and his sister.
