Do you think schools willbe open at all this week?
With so many power outages and schools being used as shelters, I'm wondering if schools will be opened at all this week?....

I was wondering the same thing. I teach for the city and if we have off the rest of the week, I would really like to volunteer somewhere. If anybody knows a number, just in case I have off let me know. My heart goes out to all those that have been affected.

I highly doubt it. It's not safe to have children at bus stops Downed trees and power lines everywhere. A lot of the roads by me are still blocked by large trees

Most don't have power so I doubt it.

Re: Do you think schools willbe open at all this week?
I hope so!!! We are moving Thursday and it will be hirrible if I can't send the kids to school! I think they should at least open schools in areas unaffected by the hurricane. I am in Central Queens and except for a few fallen trees, nothing is really going on here as far as Sandy goes. I know most of the school's teachers are local and hey, if not, there are alway substitutes! Here is hoping!

Re: Do you think schools willbe open at all this week?
I would think especially if they're being used as shelters that they couldn't have students there. That sounds like a safety issue.

I was wondering the same thing. We woke up to power this morning. I just can't imagine that all the schools will be open or that it would be safe to have kids waiting at bus stops. I guess we will see. We will be making up days into July. But, I can't complain.. My family is safe and now warm.

Re: Do you think schools willbe open at all this week?
I don't know...On a thread on teachers someone said Principals had to go in today which leads me to believe he will open tomorrow. Historically city schools are closed as a whole, I wonder if he will open only those in areas least effected? not sure he CAN do that.

I'm thinking by Thursday, most should be, unless they are without power...

Re: Do you think schools willbe open at all this week?
From what I can see it seems that LIPA is making main roads a priority. To get the stop lights back up and running. I am near a main road, so I am back on. All the crews I saw yesterday were working on stoplights and main roads.
Do you think schools will be next? I would imagine getting schools back up would be so important so that parents can get back to work also. If kids are home, many parents don't have a choice but to stay home.

I'm thinking that happened just so that Bloomberg can get an efficient report on conditions at schools. They probably went in to survey any damage and the condition of power etc. With the MTA suspended still for the most part, no power in many schools and schools being used as shelters I can't figure out HOW schools would go back to work.
I work at a private school and it is located on 17th St. I know the school doesn't have power, and the vast majority of our teachers AND students commute via subway from other parts of Manhattan, from Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and some come from NJ and LI. I can't imagine we will have school at the very least until power is back.

Re: Do you think schools willbe open at all this week?
I'm hoping the colleges that I work at are open. I don't get paid when they're closed...I've been making it up with working at home, but it's definitely harder to do.
ETA: I'd only want schools to be open if they are safe though of course!

Re: Do you think schools willbe open at all this week?
I work in Manhattan and live in Ronkonkoma. There are very few if any traffic lights. While I may be lucky to have power I'm terrified of my commute. I am also very worried about my students and if they are ok and have everything they need.

We live in such a large spread out city the differences are amazing. Although I know there are benefits for being a huge Dept of Ed in NYC, sometimes I feel like the Districts should have more control. I live in "the suburbs of Queens". Aside from trees down we had no issues. Most of the kids in our little school can walk there. Most teachers drive in. I know many parents do take the express bus or bus to the subway to get to work.
Edited to say I do not know everyone's exact situation and in no way mean to offend anyone or any teacher who cannot get into work/school safely!

I work for the DOE and I think that in our area we could safely open. We are also in the "suburbs of Queens" (probably the same area lol) and we were not badly effected THANK GOD!
As I said I am not sure HOW Rockaway, parts of Bklyn, lower Manhattan, Howard Beach, Broad Channel etc would be able to get to work or school, it seems impossible, for this reason I am not sure how he can open ALL the schools and wonder if he will open some areas (which is not typically, if EVER done).

I live in Central Queens and our area hasn't had much damage either. That said, I have family who evacuated to me, we only have 1 car that DH needs because he owns a business on LI, etc. etc. etc. And because so many teachers commute and may be coming from areas with more damage or may be dealing with family with damage, it is just too hard to know who can or can't safely get somewhere. I totally hear what people are saying about some schools being okay to open but I agree that I don't think that really CAN be done...

IMO it can only be done if he does it by district, which has never been done. I don't think it would be fair to open all schools, knowing a lot of students can't get to school and then have absences on their record etc. (obviously it would be an issue for staff as well but looking at it from a student perspective it still doesn't make sense)

I agree about all those other neighborhoods. My exDH lives in Rockaway Beach, the pics he sent are devastating. He went back to get some clothes and back to his sisters (no water, heat, electric or elevators). My DD even asked him if the school down the block from him can open. I am nervous about sending my DDs to him this weekend, the sites they will see will be awful and scary I'm sure (he lives in highrise on the boardwalk).

My in laws evacuated to us from there, it is very very bad their block had a house literally float into the ocean (they are the beach block) and tons of fires all over.
