that's like saying that car insurance is the same as taking your car to get a tune up.

I agree. I do not think they are the same thing at all but I get the impression that a lot of people do think they are the same thing.

Based on some of the other posts relating to healthcare, it seemed to me that a lot of people felt that these were one in the same. I didn't get the impression that people were aware of the fact that healthcare insurance was a risk management tool and not a necessarily a necessity.

Of course they're not the same thing but for some people they may as well be.
My mom was uninsured for 5 years and did not go to see a doctor in all that time because she couldn't afford it. She could barely pay the rent at the time, how could she pay a doctor?
Now she's got insurance because she has a better job, but she's also got dozens of 'pre-existing' conditions that she won't be able to get insurance for if McCain's plan goes through. It really makes me fearful for her health... nevermind the negative effect his plan will have on me personally.

ITA with this!! for some people it might as well be the same thing. for many people, if they don't have health INSURANCE, they can't afford to go to the doctor, so their healthCARE ( or access to it) is limited. So the two can very much go hand in hand....

While not the same thing, I believe they are intricately related. I believe the better insurance coverage you have, the more medical care you get.

While not the same thing, I believe they are intricately related. I believe the better insurance coverage you have, the more medical care you get. Right. And health outcomes are generally worse for uninsured people than insured people.
There are dozens of studies that show quantitatively that uninsured people present with more severe health issues (for example, advanced breast cancer, glaucoma-associated blindness, unchecked vascular disease requiring limb amputation), because they cannot afford -- and thus do not have access to -- routine care and preventive screenings.

Re: Do you think that healthcare insurance and healthcare/medical care
As everyone has said-this is kind of a strange question and IMO a bit condescending. In a "big picture" way, they are related. Like others said, the better your insurance is, the better you will maintain your health.
Perfect example. My DH has dental issues. We have dental insurance that pays $1000 max a year and covers 50% of treatments. He needs 7k(that is after ourt benefit out of pocket cost) in dental work. We will save to get it done but while we do-he is at risk for periodontal deisease which can lead to heart disease. If we had a better insurance plan, his issues would be taken care of more expediently therefore, not exposing him to the risk of complications.

I'm sorry you found it condescending as that was not my intention.
Based on some of the other threads on this board, it seemed to me that some people didn't get that healthcare insurance is a risk management tool, such as collision on car insurance. I use it to manage my financial responsibility in regard to health care by sharing the risk with other people who pay premiums. If I had lots more money, maybe I would manage that risk with a sinking fund. When I was younger, I self insured.

I feel better now because I thought I did something really wrong in my posts today. I'm not getting the condesending vibe from Shamrock either.

It's "start a new thread to make your point" day.
Just to clarify a couple of things. This question was about whether there was a misconception about health insurance and that is it. It wasn't a latent push of one candidate's plan over another. There was no hidden meaning or point I was trying to make. I was just wondering if it was common to believe that healthcare insurance and health care were the same thing to some.
For the record, I don't believe either plan addresses the fundamental issues of why healthcare has risen to astronomical costs; they are just changing who is paying the bills. I don't think healthcare can really reform until the causes of such high costs are addressed.
As for my early post where I was thought to be passive aggressive, I was posting what I thought was an interesting parallel. I wasn't implying that the US was becoming communist because of the nationalization of certain previously private companies. I wasn't implying support for one candidate or the other. I was commenting on the ideological thought of Marx that capitalism was a necessary step to the achievement of pure communism and that as a system, capitalism would implode and lead to socialism. That was it.
I'm sorry my posts were poorly written or misconceived. I have no problem saying what I really mean and standing behind it.
