Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
It's hard to tell... I don't think you will be able to tell until we look back on it later... and start to see the trends- like it went down here, here was rock bottom, here was the climb up, etc...
For me personally I cannot say because I never saw a difference in our own personal situation and finances...all is status quo with us... thank God.

I agree with you - I WANT everyone to keep spending. BUT many people claim to be cutting back, claim to be living on the bare minimum etc. when really there is always more you can sacrifice if you really need to. (again, I am including myself in this)
but there are people that don't need to cut back all the way to nothing
if you need to cut back- then do so- but not everyone does
I have personally cut back on many things- but I also still go out, get my $6 mani etc
I no longer have a super expensive apartment, a cleaning lady, house phone etc
so while to someone that just met me- they have no idea I cut my monthly spending in half...

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
I think the news is reporting that things are getting better which WILL cause some aspects of the problem to improve. Americans are the ultimate consumers, the desire to spend & acquire things is undeniable. Right now the economy is depressed-imagine a huge metal spring being compressed-as soon as we start to see consistant indicators that things are improving that spring is going to fly wide open. I think we will start to see it to some effect by late this year, by 2010 we'll be rockin & rollin again although unemployment will still be on the high side. I believe housing prices will stay about the same & the markets will level out to a level that is appropriate & sustainable.

right, which is why you wouldnt be able to tell from a crowded mall or a booked restaurant.
and YOU arent saying that you are living like Laura Ingalls Wilder so its fine. you are always very honest.
I am just saying that people in general talk like they are going to live off the grid and really it just means they are buying Coach instead of LV, thats all.

No, I think we are still in the contraction phases but at the tail end of it...I don't believe recovery will happen until the end of the 3rd q or early 4th q of this year.

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
No.
I think we have a longer way to go - there are so many ramifications/kinks that need to work themselves out. Just in the legal field alone in the last 2 months there has been an unprecedented number of layoffs. That kind of astronomical number of unemployed attorneys who cannot find work will ramify in other ways on our economy that not many can anticipate.
I don't think we'll go into a depression, but I think our economy will be unstable, shaky and in a recession for at least a few more years.

No I don't think it is any better. I keep hearing more and more layoffs. That is not a sign of it getting better.

things will not start to get better until about July, but we won't see or feel a change for the better until about Sept/Oct....I had just recently overheard the Chief Economist from my company at work talking to someone about it...it's going to be bad for a while...it sux

I think things are still going downhill and will continue to do so for a while...and then we will see a tiny tiny light at the end of the tunnel, which we will eventually get closer and closer to.

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
At the risk of sounding completely ignorant here I want to comment on this thread. I can only comment on what is happening with me.
I am a title closer & title broker. A 1099/self employed person. I work in the real estate field. Last year was the ABSOLUTE WORST year I have EVER had financially. While everyone else still had jobs and the economy was just starting its downturn, I was seeing underwriters lay off 100's of people. One in particular laid off 1/2 its staff and dropped small title companies from its agencies. Meaning, that small title companies could not underwrite title policies if you were a mom & pop title shop, you went out of business. Also, I had ZERO deal flow. ZERO. I saw attorneys that I have known for years completely stop doing RE and go into litigation or other legal areas. Between July 08 - and Jan 09, I had 6 deals come in. I used to have 6 per week. It was dismal.
THEN...
About 2 months ago I start seeing activity. TONS of refi's happening. New home buyers buying again. Now, they are buying short sales, but buying none the less. In the last 2 months I have gotten in 10 new deals. These deals are taking longer to close and most are refi's or REO (bank owned) properties. But a deal is a deal. I am not making as much $$$$ as I once did, but the activity is happening and that is promising.
Point is, the RE markets got hit 6-12 months BEFORE before the market tanked and the 1st bailout happened. I am seeing RE slowly come back again. People are looking for deals. The one glitch in this is that it seems banks are scared to lend $$$ for RE. Sometimes, refi's are not getting the appraised value and the folks cannot refi. Maybe they can get a MOD loan, but if they do I don't see it as a title rep. That will change as confidence slowly returns, it is starting to. It may take 6-9 months form now to fully see it in all areas of the economy, IMHO. BUT know this...IT has started to come back. I am seeing it. THANK GOD.

I keep hearing the economy is bad, nobody is going out, etc, etc. However, DH and I went on a date Saturday night...and the wait to sit down at the restaurant was over an hour! Everytime I go to the mall/store/etc...the parking lot is packed. Restaurants are always busy...so while I hear about the economy being bad, I'm not really seeing it...KWIM?
I noticed this too. While I noticed a decrease of shoppers in retail/dept. stores, the restaurants are still booming. We went out on Fri night and had an hour wait too. DH and I were like "I thought there was a recession?"

Playboy just laid off 100 employees and closed it's NY office.
usually bars and sex are the last things to go down, even in the worst economy.
I'm thinking this is not good.

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
I'm an optimistic person by nature so I am always looking for the positives versus dwelling on the negatives. For me, I work in a business that is very much ruled by the economy - if the economy is improving, business gets better. Business has been getting better these past couple of weeks so I'm choosing to remain optimistic.

I fully realize that this in no way means we are out of the recession, or that it means anything at all, other than the Dow is over 9000 today..... it's still nice seeing any kind of positive signs lately, even if they are short-lived.
