Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
Hey Shawn, thanks for bumping. It's great to see the changes in our attitudes about the economy as time goes on.
I'm curious to see what others think.
I think we have seen the worst but I think it will take us a long time to "recover".
When the jobs come back I will say we are in a recovery. I know this is the lagging indicator but it's the only thing that will really prop up our economy and get people buying, spending and paying off debt.

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
There's a song I love by (who else?) Toby Keith. In it, he says "she didn't say no... but in her eyes I could see, that this wouldn't turn out the way I intended it to be. She didn't say no... she said HELL NO"
Great song.

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
I don't think it's getting worse
I think we are in recovery- and my IRA is too- I am up about 10% since last week!
I feel like I am doing my part to get things going....between my new car, my new apartment- the vacation I booked at an amazing price and something I have planned for late Sept.-I have spent quite a bit- but also saved quite a bit as well!
I have to say- I know LI is it's own world- but I was just at the deer park outlets and the place was packed at 11:30 am on a thursday....

That's my prediction
9000 on 7/23/09
I fully realize that this in no way means we are out of the recession, or that it means anything at all, other than the Dow is over 9000 today..... it's still nice seeing any kind of positive signs lately, even if they are short-lived.
Beware the dead cat bounce

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
I am optimistic. DH works in finance and he has had a new product launch, they had to lower the interest rate, but were able to raise it again (not as high as before). He says people are investing more then before.
Real Estate, from what I hear from friends in the buisness, is improving.
I think we are in recovery, I sure hope so.

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
I remain hopeful. I'm out in AZ and I can tell you that the housing market out here is awful and is killing my business. BUT, I have been saying and will remain thinking that by end of Q4 we will start to see good things happening. Out here there are bidding wars on foreclosures and short sales. This is all very good, but we are expecting another wave of foreclosures to come through. It all takes time.

So my 9000 prediction came five months sooner than expected.

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
I think it's starting to look up but that this is going to be a jobless recovery- worse than the last jobless revcovery we had- so I think it will take people a lot longer to get back o their feet.

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
From today's market close
American Express quarterly net fell 48% to $337 million.
Microsoft's quarterly net sank 29% to $3.05 billion.
Amazon's quarterly net dropped 10% to $142 million.
before the market opened we learned UPS saw a profit decline of 49%
those aren't great signs

I think this is because most people who are shopping are using their credit cards. I am hearing that most people are using them more now and not paying them back. Lack of cash....Currently, all credit cards are going into default. Pretty soon we'll see a "bail out" for them too.

credit card delinquencies are at an all time high and more and more homeowners are foreclosing; even more foreclosures are expected over the next 6 months

housing numbers are better for the last 3 months which is considered a trend but I think it's not all it's cracked up to be. I think some of that is seasonal.
The anticipated foreclosures may be helped by an additional housing credit and that may make some homes more affordable for those looking and are working.
smoke and mirrors folks. I just hope all this doesn't implode.
that's why I did this about the market.
It seems fake.

Re: Do you think the economy is gettng better?
I'm on the younger spectrum, I just opened my 401k, and we're getting married. For us, we haven't been touched too much by the economy; we both have stable jobs, home, cars, etc. We're just hoping the economy doesn't prevent us from doing things within the next couple years if it takes long for everything to recover.

I wish it were-I would love to see a turnaround. But honestly, I think all of the numbers are inflated and we have a ways to go before we can say that. We are in the Second Great Depression.

Yes, I heard the same thing. Sad state of affairs. And the worst part-banks were supposed to be working with the American people-instead they are filing more foreclosures. Personally, I think there should be a moratorium on home foreclosures to allow people to look for employment without having the fear that they will lose their home hang over their head.
