Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?

Posted by BabyAvocado I'm just saying that we do have laws in place that prevent 2 consenting adults from marrying already for other reasons that "we see fit". It's a counter point to the "Love is Love" argument - it's just not that simple sometimes.
But, are there even any SOUND reasons why gay marriage isn't allowed??? Anything i've ever seen or read was based almost completely on religious belief.
in governemt, that is not a sound enough reason for me.
So then would it be okay for a brother and sister (2 consenting adults) who chose to get themselves sterilized to get married?

Red- I have to agree with you on the "love is love" is not the ONLY reason that people should be allowed to get married- and it is certainly not the reason why the state should permit marriage. This is an argument for NAMBLA (North American Man Boy Love Association).
To me- marriage is about more than love. Its about building a life together and wanting the same or similar things.
I do believe that ANY two ADULTS capable of consenting should be permitted to get married, regardless of gender, age, religion, race, etc...

I AM NOT comparing them....
I AM SAYING that you can't just make a BLANKET statement like "LOVE is LOVE"
ETA...and WHAT IF A MAN "LOVE" 5 women
i understand where youre coming from.... im just saying lets TRY to take these comments (ie. love is love) and put them to the topic at hand, gay marriage.
i feel like people are taking some of the thigns said on here (that are pertaining to gay marriage) and running with them
making it more complicated than it needs to be

well i love my dog, doesn't mean i should be able to marry it
What i am saying is that "love is Love" ALONE cannot be the sole reason for marriage....
no offense, but i get REALLY annoyed when people compare gay marriages to beastiality.
the topic at ahnd is about gay marriages and when we say "love is love" we arent talking about marrying your dog or horse or cousin or uncle or 5 women. we are talking about two men or two women and with that, just like with a man or woman love IS love.
I AM NOT comparing them....
I AM SAYING that you can't just make a BLANKET statement like "LOVE is LOVE"
ETA...and WHAT IF A MAN "LOVE" 5 women
If love is not the reason for marriage, what is? Also if a man was in love with 5 women and chose to be married ...he cant do so because of the LAW. That is why gay marriages are barely happening right now because of the law. Though like I said, it is a HALF OPEN DOOR which totally sux IMO

MY personl view of marriage is between 2 consenting ADULTS ETA...and once we start allowing more than that...we are making a mockery of marraige IMO
But what if the 2 consenting adults are male. That should be okay.
To me, in many cases marriages are in some cases a mockery.
like i said...i have no problem with gay marriages... but rather the possible ramifications
Bigamy/polygamy is illegal. I don't think allowing same-sex marriages will change the law on bigamy and polygamy. If the law is narrowly tailored and defines marriage as a union between two consenting adults, it shouldn't open the door to anything but same-sex marriage.
Not in all states...i believe it is legal in a few
And WHY? Same sex marriages are illegal is MANY states too?
Polygamy/bigamy is illegal is all states. Some states, such as Utah, don't heavily enforce the law, but it's still illegal. Enacting a law that allows 2 consenting adults to marry will not change the laws on polygamy/bigamy.

same laws that say gay marriages cannot exist
I believe that there must be some sort of stipulation that must say 2 consenting ADULTS...
And lots of people get married for reasons other than love

If love is not the reason for marriage, what is?
I think she is saying its not the ONLY reason for marriage.
My argument is that a lot of pedofiles says we love these boys and they love us, why shouldn't we be together? (NAMBLA). When I worked at a Rape Crisis Hotline I actually had an adult male call me after having sex with an 11 year old boy and ask me if it was rape. WHen I told him yes- he told me but I love him and he loves me.
There are some people that are not capable of consenting to love and marriage. This however, does not apply to adult gay men and women who can consent.
So this shouldn't be the ONLY reason peopel get married, but yes- love should be a reason that peopel get married.

ok, i dont justify "love is love" so anyone should be allowed to get married.
but i believe whether youre gay or straight YEs, love is love and is the same whether youre with a man or woman. i am not one to judge.
and yes, you can say how that comment can mean brother and sister can love each other or whatnot..... but im not trying to make a broad statement (it wasnt mine anyway) im singleing it to a hetero (non related!) couple and a gay (non related) couple.
i just feel like gays' love is no different than straights' love.
im not justifing the marriage process on it though.
do you see where im coming from? its alittle hard to put into words.

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
This may be sort of off-topic, and I don't exactly know how to put it, but do you think that people who think same-sex marriage should be leagalized are more prominent in certain areas of the country? Meaning--if this was a chat board in some rural part of middle America (and not Long Island in NEW YORK) would the votes be leaning heavily in the other direction?
Just a thought.

So this shouldn't be the ONLY reason peopel get married, but yes- love should be a reason that peopel get married.

I think homosexuality is more accepted in more urban environments and because of that, more people are "out of the closet" in those environments.
What is interesting to me is that originally they were only going to release Brokeback Moutain primarily in more urban environments (which they thought would receive the movie better), but there was a strong desire for it in middle america- so maybe times are changing...

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
I do have to admit, I am a little taken back by the fact that when discussing gay marriage, people are bringing up points of polygamist and incest marriages. Those are freak shows...I can understand people trying to link them for arguments sake...but seriously, do 2 men in love really compare to the marriage rights of a brother/sister getting married?
Does a man on a hill with 15 wives really compare to a gay couple?
They are people, people with the right to marry. How dark life must be when all you ask for is the simple freedom that so many around you have

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
This all goes back to my original argument....my grandparents came to this country to escape famine and religious persecution, but most of all to have the freedom to live their lives as they wanted to.
Today I enjoy many of these freedoms because they made that choice so many years ago. I just cannot understand how my "free" country who goes by the rule of seperation of church and state will deny someone the basic right of marrying the person they love and have a life with, yet do not have laws against letting heterosexual couples marry who go into marriage for totally wrong reasons.

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
If two grown men are in a loving and committed relationship, or two women in the same type of loving and committed relationship with each other, I am all for marriage. I've never taken the word marriage to be between a man and a woman only. I guess I just always assumed it to be between two consenting adults regardless of their personal life choices.
This may be a question for another thread but here-it-goes: Why are you considered married in the eyes of god but if the marriage doesn't work, you are divorced by the State?

That is a good question.
Actually Judaism has a divorce ritual you have to go through to get divorced in the state (at least in NY). The state has to be assured there are no religious barriers to the divorce.

Thats a choice they make. I am not sad for them.
My minister, the who married Darren and I, came out of the closet just 2 montsh before our wedding. He left his wife and his four children to live his life.
If he had the strenth to do it I believe anyone can find the strength to do it.
