Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
Im undecided on how to answer this....
Yes.... and no...
The only reason I feel no...is because I feel that this country was built on the guidelines of the bible/religion faith..... and this goes against it...
But again if you dont care what religion says that what does it matter...
But there is a huge difference here. It's the state & the church which are seperated.

But from a religious stand point you arent married.... but if you dont believe in religion than that shouldnt matter to you....
So if a gay couple doesn't care about what YOUR religion says, then it doesn't matter.
No one here is asking the church to change thier laws. We are talking about the state!

Thats not what Im saying at all...
What Im saying is this countrys constitution was built on religion.... if the religion states that marriage is for men and women only.... than whats wrong with them not allowing same sex marriages???
This country's constitution was not built on religion. Many of the people who came to America to settle it were escaping religious persecution from other countries. When they made the Bill of Rights and Constitution it was to afford people their rights and to seperate chuch and state so they would never face that again.
If religion states no adultery, no having children (or sex) before marriage, no birth control....then we should be persecuted by the state if we do any of these?

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
I had to give a 20 minute presentation on this in November!
After all the hours of research, I made a decision that I AM for gay marriage.
Not too long ago, interracial marriages were illegal. Did that make them WRONG? NO, of course not! It's just a matter of time before society evolves to accept reality.
eta: and I AM a Catholic. Wouldn't Christian ideals tell us that the Utilitarian approach is the best? (The greatest happiness for the greatest # of people). Will you be UNHAPPY if a gay person can spend the rest of his life married to another man? Because those 2 men would CERTAINLY be happy.

MY personl view of marriage is between 2 consenting ADULTS ETA...and once we start allowing more than that...we are making a mockery of marraige IMO
But what if the 2 consenting adults are male. That should be okay.
To me, in many cases marriages are in some cases a mockery.
like i said...i have no problem with gay marriages... but rather the possible ramifications

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
I'm in favor of it. If consenting adults want to get married in the eyes of the state than I believe they should be.
Religious marriage is a different thing and each church can make that decision. If you don't like a church's views, you can change religions - it's a lot harder to change countries.
I believe there is a good reason for separation of church and state, but that separation is not happening around this topic.
As long is there are no health issues (such as related individuals getting married), minors involved or coercion, I believe anyone should be able to get married.

Well whatever it should be called, they should still have the same rights as an other "couple".... our friends that have the twins had to go through the "adoption" process just so that they both have the same rights with their children, that doesn't seem fair!
I think it's fine and NECESSARY that gay couples have to go through an adoption process for one parent or both (depending on how the child was "obtained", for lack of a better word). If the child is not 100% biologically theirs (which obviously it can't be), then that child needs to be adopted properly. There has to be a history because of genetic health concerns. I don't think that just because you are a married gay couple you get to just pluck your children from wherever and declare them yours without a formal adoption process. Heterosexual couples who conceive their children biologically have the right to not go through an adoption process. If you cannot conceive your children biologically, heterosexual or NOT, you have to go through an adoption process. I'm sorry, but IMO that's a right they just don't have because they are gay. Not as a "punishment", but simply because logically it doesn't make sense.
If their children are not 100% biologically theirs, yes they are entitled to the same rights, but they have to accomplish that through the proper channels for SO many reasons...child abuse situations like the ones that have been in the news lately only being one of them.

Is the Catholic religion the only religion that is against this?
I've seen a lot of people preface their statements with: "I'm a Catholic, but I'm still in favor..."
Can two Jewish men walk into a temple in (somewhere other than NY obviously) and get married?
What about two Muslim women?

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with multiple partner marriages, BUT one of the concerns is:
insurance purposes: can one man, with one job, marry 5 women, have 15 kids and have them ALL under his medical/dental insurance for the same amount that a husband, wife and two kids pay?
i can see that leading to big problems, like insurance fraud, and people using the mormon faith as an excuse to do stuff like that.
I saw a story on this not too long ago - the guy had 5 wives, many children and was collecting food stamps, and welfare because he could not afford to support all of them on his salary and none of the women worked outside the home.
As a taxpayer, I have a huge problem with this.

Just so you have the complete information... the couple was together for quite a few years before conceiving their child... and it was completely biologically the baby of one of the women... they were together through the whole conception and pregnancy time and live their lives like any other couple/family would.... IMO they shouldn't have to go through the adoption process, and the children were not "plucked"!!

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
Most religions prohibit gay marriage. But, like every religion, there are some sects of Christianity, Judaism and (maybe) Muslim that are more liberal about this. But to my knowledge, there is no religion that expressly permits gay marriage.
Speaking as someone who is Jewish, the laws of Judaism are only meant to apply to Jews. We don't try to tell any one else what to do. We do not encourage conversion and if someone does want to convert to Judaism they are supposed to be turned down and should come back 3 times to show they are truly devoted. (I don't know if this is actually done anymore- but it was the old tradition).
So although I dont see any rabbis marrying 2 men or 2 women anytime soon, I don't think they would be telling the state what to do.

As for gay marriage. Absolutely!! If two people love one another to battle all this persecution and prejudice just to make a commitment to one another, why shouldn't they be allowed to?? They should receive all the same rights and priveleges (and, as one person said, the responsibilities), as well as the label "marriage" that heterosexual couples are entitled to!

Homosexuality is against the Muslim religion as well...I'm not certain but I believe it's one of the worst possible offenses. I've heard that some reform jewish rabbis will perform a gay marriage but I don't believe its widely accepted in the Jewish religion. I'm sure there's someone else here that knows more than I do about that..
