i don't know why you would show a young child this! if i was walking by i would have just kept walking, not stopped and stared.

This recently happened in my neighborhood too and so many neighbors were on the scene. Some were in tears. Some weren't and were on their cells reporting it to friends. There are many civilians who psychologically want to help, but know that they cant run in there- stop it- etc... They can only get so close. The firemen do their job. So they stand, whisper, take pics, stare.... It might even be good if they are there though. If the firefighters have to throw someone out a window or something, one of them could catch. Look at the Stamford Fire. Most people really mean well at heart. I believe that.
Then there are those that have to see the human drama of it all. I dont think that they want to see bad. I just think that they are frozen by such awful. They dont see themselves as getting in the way or not being helpful. Maybe I'm wrong though....
I think i know where you're coming from, and agree with this
People can't help but be transfixed by something like this - a fire is such a scary force of nature that it's normal to want to watch it because its awe inspiring to see it. I also think that people can sometimes forget that someone's life/home is being destroyed in the process because they're so caught up in the spectacle. This is the sad part i think, because there is usually some sort of tragedy behind a fire of that proportion
However, that being said, there's no way i'd bring a kid to watch something like that. it's way too scary for them!! And i agree with the OP's response in thinking that some people probably were just rude and gawking.. I don't think i'd go out of my way to watch something like that (like being dropped off to watch it.. that's morbid)
i hope your neighbors are ok

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
I think there's a big difference between watching your neighbors house burn down and actually going out of your way/traveling to the scene of something like that.
If my neighbor's house was on fire, I would absolutely watch (not with my kid though bc I wouldn't want to scare him). However, I'm not like driving around my neighborhood looking for tragedies to watch.
A few weeks ago there was a big car fire on the way home from Hershey and there were all cats pulled over just watching. I couldn't believe it. I kept thinking like who cares to watch an empty car burn-and enough to stop what you're doing/ stop traveling to your destination? So weird.
Eta haha cars were pulled over watching, not cats- if there were all cats watching then I probably would have pulled over too, at least for a photo.

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
i think there is a BIG difference between stopping to see if you can offer help, or lend a hand, and then stopping to gawk. dropping your wife and kids off to gawk is amazingly rude, inappropriate and DANGEROUS! there is a certain part of it that we all have instilled in us to look, and see what is going on. i don't think anyone on here can say that they have never been interested to know what was going on if lets say, there was an ambulance at your neighbors, or a fire down the street. but i would think that one would try to see if they can help if they could, and not just show up to gawk. i think there is a difference for sure.

ITA. I have gone outside to see what was wrong and offered to help when an ambulance showed up for my neighbor's child, but I would never go to another neighborhood to purposely gawk at a house burning down. I think it's disgusting to do that, especially with young kids.

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
I remember one late night early morning... About 2:30am-3am a police officer had pulled over a man in our neighborhood. He obviously was drunk and the police officer's voice carried... It was quiet and you could hear everything he said with the windows open. you wouldn't believe how many people got up to suddenly go for a "walk".... I stayed in the house.

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
this happened to my family. it was very hurtful and embarrassing. we were all outside crying watching the house in flames and people were just being busy bodies and nosy. at that point, firefighters and cops were on the scene so it was under control, but people stuck around and it was very annoying. our neighbors that know us were helpful, but everyone else being there felt strange and intrusive. none of those people even asked if there was anything they could do, so it was like GO AWAY! it was also super annoying when all the people that play with radios came to "check out the scene." it was unreal. the house is on a dead end, so you would really have to go out of your way to come down. and then, you had these people sitting at the end of the block waiting for everything to clear up...then those people had the ballz to go up to my dad after the firefighters and cops left to try to get business... (cleaning up debris, bordering up the house, etc.)
i definitely empathize with people that have gone through this. if i saw something like that, i would probably stop and ask if they needed help, but then leave. it's not a circus... it's extremely painful and emotionally shocking for those affected.

So if your neighbor's house was on fire, you would sit in your house and continue to watch TV? Glad that I am not part of that type of community. . .
I don't know if this is directed at me, or anyone else, but I could see from my front stoop exactly what was going on.
I did not have to race up the street and park my car in front of the scene from MANY blocks or even different neighborhoods away which is where I bet half these people came from.
There is just no need for it IMO.
Like another poster said............this is a tragic situation. If it's your immediate neighbors, that's one thing, but who the heck are the rest of the losers on hand is what I question.
I know this happened a day ago but is still bothering me because of the entertainment factor that people take with such a tragedy.
DH said it best: someone could be burning alive in there and you take your family to watch?
WTF is wrong with people.
Sorry if I hit a nerve ;).

First off, I am so sorry your family went through this.
I just wanted to point out that this is basically the same kind of scenario that maybe I wasn't getting across which is why it looked so awkward and like a circus.
This house too you really have to go out of your way to get to.
It is a very quiet area. Not a city street in Queens or somewhere.

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
I don't think it's so much "gawking" and "entertainment" like some of you say. I think it's just one of those shocking things that you just can't help yourself because you are in such disbelief - I don't think that makes anyone a bad person or anything. I don't think I would bring a small child though because that can be traumatizing.

I am assuming everyones intentions are good, you are assuming they are bad, but we are both assuming. . .
