i think each and every striker should be fined heavily
if they turn down this latest offering, bloomberg should fire the whole bunch of them and get other people in there.
They are easily replaceable, IMO
Bloomberg can't fire them, it has to be Pataki. I think that if he had the power, Bloomberg would have done it already, he's so angry about the whole thing. It's sad that Bloomberg really has no leverage in this whole situation, and Pataki won't get involved so that he doesn't upset anyone who may vote for him when he decides to run for national office.
This is an interesting article about the politics of the strike. Strike

I'm sure there are transit workers who work hard and do great work- but you can't compare yourself to a cop or a fireman. I'm sorry- but very few people can. They risk their lives every day to serve the people. They get shot, and killed and injured to benefit the city. The Transit workers don't have that kind of job- and they should stop comparing themselves to the NYPD and FDNY.

Re: Do you think (yes strike related)
and the pension thing is a bunch of BS
My dad was a city employee for 30 years -- 62 has always been the age
and this vesting 6% of the salary for the first 10 years - -what is so terrible? They get that money back -- it's like a 401K

And if I understand correctly- the MTA agreed to lower the age to 55 if they would contribute 6% for 10 years. And this wouldn't even affect the old employees- its only the new employees. So anyone who would work for the MTA in the future would be aware of this condition and accept it willingly. Come on Its called COMPROMISE union- and its better than what a lot of us have.

The age was already 55. MTA's proposals all had the age raised to 62 + the 6% contribution for the first 10 years, which would be raised from the current 2%. It was the night before the strike that they agreed to drop it back to 55.
I'm still not sure how I feel about this strike - I absolutely see it from both sides. I just want the correct info to be out there is all.
ETS: Incidentally, the pension compromise proposed by the MTA late Mon night is the reason the International TWU is calling this an unauthorized strike. They felt (and I do tend to agree with them) that this showed real progress. At least enough to continue at the table and not authorize the strike.

Re: Do you think (yes strike related)
I think putting Toussiant in jail would make him a "martyr". Just keep the fines coming, so that for each day they strike, they loose money. The people striking are so selfish, I mean my DH has to pay into his health benefits and DH does not get a pension!!! Invest in a 401K and stop your b***hing!! OK, rant over. Sorry, this strike really pisses me off.

I agree, this morning was the first time I heard anything about it being illegal to try to change the pension structure at the bargaining table - Taylor law says it has to be changed by the legislature.
That said, I am not commuting into the city, so my feelings might be VERY different if I were. I finished school recently - I would have been really upset and frustrated if I had to take finals right now.

That's my point too. There's a lot of information that I think we don't know since all of the media coverage of this is obviously very anti-strike. The very same law that makes it illegal for them to strike makes it illegal for the MTA to even discuss the pension with the union. It's a state arbitrated law that covers pensions, not a contract negotiation. Contracts are too temporary and the negotiations to volatile (case in point, here!) to allow something as permanent and lengthy as pensions be a part of it.

Sorry but the strike is ILLEGAL. IMO that is all i need to know!
IMO certain people should just wait it out like others have to!
