Do you wake DC up if they have a fever to check again?
DS went to bed with a 102 fever. Should I wake him at some point tonight to check his temp again or wait until the morning? I gave him tylenol at 7:30. Should I wake him to give him more if he needs it around 11:30 and 3:30? Do I just let him sleep through the night? I have never dealt with this before? I don't want it to get worse overnight but he is sleepy so soundly now.

I usually wake up myself and feel DS's forehead. If it is burning up I wake him to give medicine. if not, then i let him sleep

For the first night or so, I usually get up and give her more ty or motrin throughout the night. Just to keep the fever down, even if she does not feel hot. She usually rolls over and goes right back to sleep.

Re: Do you wake DC up if they have a fever to check again?
We had to deal with a febrile seizure last year, so I have to give DS medication every 3 hours if he has a fever. We are not co-sleepers at all (DS is the WORST child to sleep with) but we suck it up and bring him to bed with us when he's sick. That being said, I would probably go into the room around 11 and check DC's head. If it still feels warm, then I would briefly wake DC for more medicine.

I remember when you had to deal with the febrile seizure and when Janice did as well. I thought of this when I put him down tonight. He does not sleep in bed with us but I am going to check on him every so often throughout the night. Should I bring him into bed with me tonight? He is sleeping fine now in his crib.

Re: Do you wake DC up if they have a fever to check again?
I just felt his head and body (which is what felt really hot to me when I took his temp). He feels pretty cool to me. I think I may wake him at 11:30 anyway to check him and give him more tylenol. I am so not used to this. I just want him to be ok.

I think giving him a dose at 11:00-11:30 would make him and you sleep better tonight

That is what I am thinking. I feel like this is going to be a sleepless night for me and I have so much to do at work tomorrow.
How is it that DH is already snoring? Men are so interesting like that. They just don't worry like us.

Luca's body burns up when he's running a fever. You can practically feel him without even touching his body. Do you have an ear thermometer? Because I can usually check DS's temp without even waking him. I probably wouldn't take him into bed with you- it's not something we would have ever done if not for the seizure, and we probably won't with our next DC unless we feel there's a reason. I'm sure he'll be fine. Almost all fevers, even ones with seizures, are not need for major concern.

Re: Do you wake DC up if they have a fever to check again?
I don't have an ear one, only a rectal one. I hate t wake him to take his temp but I want to keep an eye on it. I have a video monitor so that helps a little at least.

That helps a ton! We went and bought one after the seizure and it's given me a lot of peace of mind. And as for DH, yes mine can sleep through it all too!

Re: Do you wake DC up if they have a fever to check again?
I never do just b/c DS is such a bad sleeper if I woke him up to take his temp (which he hates) he would never go back to sleep and when he is sick i worry that the lack of sleep is worse...I always figured if is fever was high he would wake up....
Now reading this thread I am worried I have been doing the wrong thing and will probably wake him up next time...

Should I just give him the tylenol at 11:30 and 3:30 or should I check his temp too? I only have a rectal thermometer.

wow, she lets u just put the dropper in her mouth, swallows it and goes back to sleep? I AM SO JEALOUS! Getting the medicine in DS is always a challenge and I always worry I lose half of it when he spits it out

Given that he had 102, I would probably skip the rectal and give him medicine before you go to bed. You will probably all sleep through the night. If you happen to wake in the middle of the night, I would feel DS and see if he needs another dose. I "try" not to over-medicate, but my circumstances are a little different than most. I know I certainly didn't handle fevers the same before the seizure. I was much more laid back. And the fact of the matter is, even now, fevers happen and they're not a bog deal. Even though they feel like a big deal to mommies!

Thank you so much for your help here. You have made me feel so much better. I am a big worrier and always have been. Adding a child to that mix is very dangerous (mostly for DH who has to deal with me). I am going to give him another dose at 11:30 and try to get some sleep. I hate to over medicate but I think it will be better for us all in the long run.

Yeah, she does. She is usually such a heavy sleeper. I have even changed her diaper without waking her or if I do, she'll roll back over. When she is sick, if it's a cold or something where there really is no medication to soothe her, then she is a terrible sleeper. But, if it's a fever or something that I can give her motrin or tylenol for, she sleeps though almost anything, as long as she is kept comfortable.

Re: Do you wake DC up if they have a fever to check again?
My life as a mother changed the day I did not wake Josh up at the 4 hr mark.
he went right into a seizure 10 minutes later.
I will always wake him now. I will never give him a bath when he has a fever. I start off with ear temp...if its higher then 101.5, then I get a rectal read. I agree with Nicole, when josh has a fever it feels like his belly is on fire.
I hope it's broken

Re: Do you wake DC up if they have a fever to check again?
Thanks everyone for your help
He slept through the night with no problem. I gave him tylenol at 11:30 and then checked on him periodically through the night. He did not feel warm at 3:30 so I let him sleep. He woke up his normal time this morning and chugged a bottle. His temp this morning was 98.6
I called daycare to tell them he was not coming in and she told me that 2 kids in his class went home with fevers yesterday. Something is going around.
