Do you/will you have your child wear a helmet

When riding their bike?

I am a bike rider. Nothing serious, just something I like to do. I wear a helmet as does my DH, and have since I was a kid. There was never a question that my DS will wear a helmet when he learns to ride a bike.

Here in Brooklyn, no one wears helmets. Little kids ride on the side walks with no protection. It really surprises me. Everyone I know adult or child wears a helmet.

So will you or do you make your child wear a helmet while on a bike?

I will say I am a bit neurotic about it because my brother lost a good friend when he was in High School because she was hit by a car while riding her bike. My BFF's brother has brain damage from falling from his bike, and I was hit by a car when I was a kid riding my bike and thank God I was wearing a helmet. My college roommate was a bike rider and I bought her a helmet. I month later she was hit by a car, and was fine because of the helmet.

yes and DD knows that she needs to wear it when she rides her bike or scooter.

it's not something that is up for discussion.

Isn't it a law that children MUST wear a helmet at all times?? To answer your question tho, yes, he will wear it at all times..no matter what his friends are doing. lol

IN NYS it is a law for children under 16 to wear a helmet for bike riding, skateboarding, rollerskating, scooters, etc....I never wore one as a kid. But I got one around age 17 when I woke up in the street after riding my bike through a pile of wet leaves and fell. Don't remember much. My DS already has a helmet. I have seen way to many kids with head injuries that could have been prevented. I hate seeing toddlers and kids not wearing a helmet. I have been known to say something to their parents....

We bought DD a helmet when we put the infant seat on my bike and we do make her wear it when she rides her tricycle so that she's in the habit.

I will admit that when my DH made me buy a helmet I scoffed at first... maybe it's a Brooklyn thing? I never owned a bike helmet until 5 years ago.. 20-something years of riding a bike.

Absolutely, when that time comes. IMO there is absolutely no sane reason not to have them wear a helmet.

Yes..I will have them wear one but I have to admit...several times DH and I have said how happy we are that we didn't have to wear them. I know, not a responsible way to think but I really can't stand the way they look.

Every single time. I hate when I see adults riding with kids and the kids have helmets but the adults do not. So if I ride with them, I wear one too.

Ezra wears a helmet now, and will whenever he rides!

DD does, even on her trike. Initially it was because I wanted her to get in the habit- but she actually almost went flying off after hitting a rock. DH caught her but had he not, and she was helmet-less, she very likely would have hit her head.

I ALWAYS wear a helmet when riding my bike, and so does DS, so he doesn't know any differently.

Plus, I've seen a lot of kid's haircuts, and most helmet designs, and I think they'd look a lot cooler if they covered their heads with a good helmet....
