doctor appointment-update
Hi girls,
So this weekend was really rough with the third miscarriage in a row. I wanted to update you a little on what i'm going to do.
So I have a meeting with my doctor today. I did a lot of research this weekend and I want the doctor to do some further testing on myself and my husband. How can it be just my husband with fertility issues when every time I do IVF i am getting pregnant and then something happens and the embryo is dieing. Last miscarriage the doctor said nothing is wrong, and that i'm just in a small percentage of women that keep having bad luck before they get their babies.
Well this time, I'm not sure if that is true. I want to see if I have an immune disorder or if my husband or I have genetic Translocation which is a unbalance in the chromosomes. It's worth a shot for him to do testing and see if this is what is going on. I just want answers, like we all do!
I also did make an appointment for a second opinion but the earliest they had was December 20th, so my husband and I have decided to move forward with this practice once again and do another whole egg retrieval. I'm hoping I will be pregnant the next transfer but if not, then I will move forward and try a different doctor. Wish me luck at the doctors today, I'm going in with questions and I'm not leaving until I have answers.

Re: doctor appointment
I'm so sorry you're going through this. I follow your story, though I'm not sure I remember all of the details.
I think in your latest transfer you used a day 3 embryo. Have you ever had a day 5 embryo? I ask because if you are dealing with male infertility issues, then it's quite possible that it's the quality of the sperm.
We did IVF with male infertility and the embryos were perfect on day 3. By day 5 all had arrested except 2 - and those were not yet blasts. We transferred both back but it was BFN. Sperm DNA doesn't kick in until day 3-4, so it's possible it is only male issues in your case.

Hi hun. Thank you for writing to be about this. I'm going to bring this up to my doctor today. He is a big believer in transferring it back on day 3, maybe we should wait till day 5 if that will help. I will definitely bring it up to him.

Thank you hun!! My parents are very disappointed that I as the patient have to request more testing to rule out if there is something wrong or not. This doctor should be more aggressive and treat each patient differently and not the same. I wish he would just say, I will help you guys and I will figure this out. But now I have had three miscarriage and lost 4 embryos in the process, so I'm not waiting anymore. I'm hoping he will give me some kind of answers today.
Thanks hun for the support!

doctor appointment
Hey I just wanted to wish you lots of luck today. Was genetic testing part of the initial screening? DH and I each had genetic testing with Dr. Palter and I had 2 levels with him for chromosome sequencing due to a test my husband came back positive for. Ours was done through RECOMBINE. I would also suggest doing PGD on the embryos if you are open to it. There are so many variables out there and I am a huge fan of 2nd and 3rd opinions. Good luck today and keep your head up!!!

I'm not sure what practice you're with, but have you considered getting a second (third, fourth) opinion?

Re: doctor appointment-update
***UPDATE: So I went to the doctor, he doesn't think I have genetic Translocation, but he said if it would give me peace of mind he will test both my husband and I to make sure. He said that with the first miscarriage (blighted Ovrum) he did check for genetic translocation and it was negative so he doesn't think I have it.
-He also said that he doesn't believe I have an immune disorder because of me being young and so early in the IVF process. He did give me the option that if I strongly believe I have an immune disorder and need immune therapy, then he will send me to a doctor.
Finally, He gave me the option to continue to do IVF and can either do PGD testing but he did say, "I know your Catholic and I know that this might open a can of worms for you" This was the first time my doctor cared about my beliefs and understood why i'm nervous about making so many embryos and why I'm not sure if I want to do the PGD testing.
So I feel relieved, I will go for further testing to rule out genetic translocation and I will proceed with another round of IVF in the meantime. Thank you ladies for always supporting me getting me throw the hardest times!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: doctor appointment-update
Just wanted to wish you luck. Sounds like your doctor is willing to work with you and is open to ruling out other options. That's more generous than some REs. I'm hoping you get your miracle baby soon.

Re: doctor appointment-update
Sounds like you have a good plan. For what it's worth, there are many reasons for pregnancy loss or implantation failure. Is there a reason you specifically thought you had a translocation or immune issues?

No there was no specific reason at all. I am just so frustrated after three transfers and 4 losses I just wanted the doctor to be more aggressive and do more testing so that I could rule out any other issues.

doctor appointment-update
I feel your pain. I just had my 7th loss on Friday! Sucks each and every time!! I have done full immune testing and did a heavy immune protocol and still can't seem to get things to work! Such a frustrating process. Hope you get some answers soon or that the next step just works for you. Sometimes it is just a numbers game of getting that right egg/embryo, but sometimes there are other factors that need treatment.
What practice are you with? Who would they send you to for immune testing and treatment? Some practices don't really believe in immune issues and don't recommend you to the best drs for testing and treatment.

Re: doctor appointment-update
Im glad you are digging deeper and exploring other options.
I think I remember reading that if the embryo arrested in the first 3 days, then its usually egg quality b/c the egg does the work of developement in the beginning until the sperm takes over; if it arrests after day 3, then it is usually male factor. But those are probably not hard / fast rules
Sometimes there isnt a concrete answer. I've wracked my brain for months and months after IVF was done for me.
I learned i am MTHFR homozygous which means I have 2 bad MTHFR genes. What does that mean..means I cant process folic acid into folate. what do dr's tell you when trying to get pregnant..take folic acid. Yeah..well all this time my body couldnt do shit with it. MTHFR gene is critical for cell functions in our body. Gene mutations cause all sorts of issues. Infertilty is one of them. Causes bowel issues, can cause cancer cell receptors to turn on, etc. Did my fertility dr. check me for that..NOPE. My naturopathic did.
I also have low cholesterol. Like really low. My family dr. didnt think it was so low, but my naturopathic dr. did. Mostly b/c the general practitioner sees people with #'s sky high and then go low on statin drugs. But cholesterol is critical to hormone development and VIT D. all of mine are in the toilet. I know after I had DS my cholesterol was low from my life insurance exam. I think something went wonky after him. Cant know for sure though. I've pondered and pondered that maybe that factor left me unable to support healthy eggs. B/c I have a lot of eggs for a 37 yr old. but they're shit. Did my fertility dr check that. NOPE.
they check for a million things and made me get another vaccination for chicken pox. but these 2 simple things were not checked. I didnt know about them until after I maxed out my IVF. Had I known, maybe I'd done things differently.
So 1) ask your dr about getting checked for the MTHFR genetic mutation. It affects a lot of things in our bodies.
2) get your cholesterol checked.
3) if your doctor thinks your're nuts. find another one.
Dont be afraid to keep asking questions.

I just recently got my cholesterol checked when they did the yearly screening and all is well with that! But I definitely will look into the MTHFR genetic mutation. Thank you for helping me and giving me advice
