Does a clogged milk duct go away on it's own?

It seems that I might have this and I am hoping I don't have to go to the dr. Last night I didn't get any sleep because I had fever so I would get the chills then I was hot ( I did take tylenol), then I was vomiting and if I wasn't then I was nasues. It doesn't hurt to nurse her and it isn't red but it sore to touch. I did call my OBGYN back in NY and they recommened going to a DR, here but I am wondering if I really need to.

For me they never did and they always got infected.

Try hot/cold compresses and massage the area in front of the plugged duct and massage towards your nipple. And make sure you nurse that side, it will help pull out the plug. Not to be gross, but I knew when the plug came out cause there would be a stringy piece of milk. gross right!

If you have a temp/nauseus it's prob already infected. I'd def call the doc.

i got this tip from the kellymom site i think?

it might be painful (if you miss), but you can try looking for the clog and unclogging it yourself. just a simply poke with a clean, sterile needle will do. i had them when i bf'ed and it unclogs the duct immediately... the hard part is looking for the clog. look for a whitish bump, i guess it looks like a mini whitehead. try not to poke the wrong areas though, i've made myself bleed a couple of times. I had this once when DD was about 6 wks, w/ bad pain, nauseau & fever. I called my dr. & she saw me the same day & prescibed antibiotics. If you have a fever like the OP said, its probably infected. Maybe your "old" dr can call in a prescription or go to a quick dr type of place?

When I felt clogged I would massage that spot on my breast while nursing and it would go away.

Don't be afraid to call your doctor if it gets worse. Chat Icon
