Re: Does anybody or their spouse
One of my dearest friends works there. My DH and I were talking about it this morning. It definately depends on what you do as to what your bonus will be. She is in IT, but he said she could probably expect her bonus to be about 75-100% of her base salary. DAMN! It really is a great company to work for.

Re: Does anybody or their spouse
Those who receive large bonuses do not get paid overtime.
Wherease those who get paid OT, do not get a significant bonus.
In the end it balances out.
Also had to mention that bonuses are taxed about 45% and the "average" bonus numbers are stated as BEFORE taxes.

Re: Does anybody or their spouse
Honestly, the only people that are really working the totally crazy hours there are the investment bankers. Traders typically do not work extremely long days. Many people work from 8am to 7pm but I dont consider that to be that bad. The desks that i used to work with got in at around 7.30 but cleared out by 5.30. Not a bad life if you ask me! They get paid so much becuase Goldman attracts some of the best and brightest, and they are very talented at what they do.

No...I started at Morgan Stanley after college but had an offer from Goldman too. They were both below 6 figures. High salaries for a 21 year old, certainly, but the traders and sales people straight from college and in training programs don't make 6 figures to start...Not for a while until you have your own accounts.
You still work for Morgan Stanley?? I worked for them for 8 years!!
My husband works for Morgan Stanley. He has been with them for 13 years.
And speaking of bonuses...he gets his letter today!

Not always true. My friend works in IT and all summer she was working till at least 10 at night and most weekends. Her average day is less and she is usually out by 7ish, but it is quite demanding.
But you are right they do attract some of the best and brightest.

Yes there will always be special projects that require you to work long hours for periods of time.... But I didnt come across anyone there (outside of IB) that worked consistent 13-14 hours days all year round. Most people worked 50-60 hour weeks, which yes, is more than most professions, but its not crazy. And many of the traders work even less than that.... The thing is, you have to be willing to work at any time, and put Goldman first.

Re: Does anybody or their spouse
I was a trader. We had a morning meeting at 7 or 7:30 to brief us before the market opened. After the market closed I usually research until 6 or so (though you can't do any more trades), and often had client dinner meetings after. We also had break-out sessions after the market closed which lasted an hour or two. I usually got in around 6:45AM, and was leaving around 6 or so, but usually went to client dinners after work. I arranged so many client dinners that Le Cirque and the '21' Club sent me large Christmas presents! It was really stressful and coupled with commuting 4 hours round trip it was killing me. Kudos to anyone with a family who does it and has any outside life. Before I changed careers one middle-aged woman trader took me aside and said "Leave...I have lots of money and no one in my life to spend it on. Don't make that mistake."

That commute is a killer when you work hours like that
Before I changed careers one middle-aged woman trader took me aside and said "Leave...I have lots of money and no one in my life to spend it on. Don't make that mistake."
How incredibly sad. But you know, I know someone going the same route. She is 35, and her accountant told her she made so much money she better buy some property or something so she bought this beautiful house in Long Beach - and it is just her. I feel bad for her. But she is never around to meet anyone.
Your job should only be you life if you want it to be.
