Does anyone do "other" treatment besides EI, OT, speech, ABA?
I am talking nutrition (GFCF diet), supplementation, etc...
How were you results?
Also did anyone contact Dan! doctors and if so, what was your take on it.
If you are more comfortable FM me please do.
TIA.

Re: Does anyone do "other" treatment besides EI, OT, speech, ABA?
I am an occupational therapist and I have a couple of children that I am working with right now that have gone or are going that route. One has made such great gains since seeing a DAN doctor, he has also received auditory training therapy a few times in east meadow which has improved his communication skills greatly! I highly recommend looking into other forms of treatment. A multi-sensory treat is the best route to go, I believe!!! Good luck! Let me know if you would like more info!

Re: Does anyone do "other" treatment besides EI, OT, speech, ABA?
My son has a severe allergy to dairy, so since he was little it has been out of his diet. I spoke with a DAN doctor unofficially (he is a friend of a coworker) and I started taking gluten out of my ds's diet in November and giving him a multi vitamin (something he recommended). I have to say we have seen an improvement. He also has been attending school since September so I'm sure that has helped as well. HTH.

Parents really don't do these treatments in isolation - they do it along with their therapies.... The whole point of GCFC is to eliminate some of the things getting in the way of treatment. I know parents who swear by it, and some who never saw a change. One family I work with really saw changes with therapy and GCFC. But the only way they saw changes was when he was doing his therapies and how much he gained.

I agree with Liza. When I worked in early intervention, I saw the same thing.

My DC does not have Autism, but I did work with a really great Doctor when I was in Pharmaceuticals.
He is an Allergy/Immunologist/Pediatrician. His name is Dr. Marvin Boris, and he is located on Froehlich Farm Blvd in Woodbury.
I don't believe that he takes insurance, but from what I have seen he is amazing. His practice specializes in Autism. He is a big believer in modfying the childs diet, and they used to do chelation therapy.
Give them a call.

I did not mean "instead of".
I was asking in term of "in addition to" other EI services.

Re: Does anyone do "other" treatment besides EI, OT, speech, ABA?
My son has severe food allergies that went undetected for a long time. When we finally discovered his allergies, changed his diet, and treated him with medication, (claritin) he had such amazing gains.
I would definitely recommend getting allergy testing done for any child honestly.
As for supplements, I've heard that DHA/ Omega 3 fish oil helps some children with language. We are going to start giving it soon.
As for the DAN... I have heard that Dr. Boris is great. He is also very expensive. It is $750.00 for the first visit, and nothing is covered under insurance.
Boris has 2 clinics, the autism clinic, and an allergy clinic. I tried to make an appt. for the allergy clinic, which does take insurance, and they refused because Lance has a speech delay. Even though he is not on the spectrum, he has to go to the autism clinic. So I was a little put off by that, and decided not to go.

Lance's teacher has 2 children with PDD. Her regular ped. uses a "DAN" approach, and treats many children with PDD. Her name is Dr. Rakowska, she works for Immediate Pediatric Care in Lindenhurst.

My student sees Dr. Ellis and they love him in the same office. If that's the doctor that you aren't thrilled with. I have another student seeing Dr. Pelevsky in Northport. He is a wholistic Ped/DAN Doctor. Good luck!
