does anyone have any experience with Fifths disease?
Talia has it - the dr. made it seem like at this point it is no big deal since she broke out in a rash already.
I wasn't really concerned until my family said they weren't comfy being around her this weekend even though my dr. already said it wasn't contageous. (they looked it up online and it said there are no guarantees that it is not contageous)
We changed our plans to keep her out of the sun/heat...but I haven't changed my plans to go to a friends bbq tomorrow since the dr assures me its ok...
thoughts?

From what I understand, once you have the rash, you are no longer contageous and it's on its way out at that point.

I do know that it's highly dangerous for someone who is pregnant to get it, so if there is anyone expecting at the BBQ, I would probably stay home. Hope she feels better soon!

I do know someone at work may have had it and the nurse said I had to leave the building bc i was pg and could effect the baby. I would just be cautious if anyone in your family is pg.

Re: does anyone have any experience with Fifths disease?
When I first found out I was PG my niece and nephew had it. It is not dangerous to kids but it is extremely dangerous to a PG person.
Once the rash comes out though it is no longer contagious. I was absolutely fine being around them once they had the rash.
My niece actually ended up getting it twice back to back

I think it's fine to be out and about with her at this point if she has the rash. Plus, I hear about it going thru daycares and elementary schools fairly often - I don' t think it's that dangerous. My little sister actually had it when I was pg and my ob wasn't concerned once she had the rash.

Re: does anyone have any experience with Fifths disease?
Once the rash comes out it is no longer contagious. It is very serious if any adult gets it. My mom got it a few years ago and she was miserable for a few weeks. The doctor said that I had it at some point (told me when I was pg because I was exposed at work). I have no idea when I had it. They said that a lot of the time kids get it and it never even gets recognized.

This is so true...I had to go to the dr. yesterday for something totally unrelated. I thought T might have broken out in a rash from her sunscreen - I had no clue that there was something else wrong (since she just broke out in the rash yesterday). If I wasn't already at the dr. I might not have known that she had it.

Re: does anyone have any experience with Fifths disease?
I've had 5th disease myself at age 21! I worked with kids and thats how I got it. Once you get it, you can not get it again though. As an adult, it causes really bad joint pain, like a severe arthritis. That was uncomfortable. I just made sure that my hands were clean and I stayed home from work for a few days and there really isnt much you can do for it. I did have a fever so I took tylenol. The thing is with 5th disease, once the rash shows, its not contagious. Its the days before where you are contagious but you wouldnt even know that you have it until the rash breaks out and by that time, you arent contagious anyway. Your family shouldnt worry, its not like the chicken pox or something. Oh yes, and def. keep her out of the heat, it does make the rash feel worse or itchy even. Not much you can do, just let it run its course at this point. HTH

Re: does anyone have any experience with Fifths disease?
I'm a teacher and apparently I had it and never knew it. They tested me when I was pregnant and I already had the antibodies.
I agree with the above posters - dangerous to pregnant women, presents with a rash usually and that means it's on its way out!
