Does Cailen have a problem with food? Edited at bottom and some more questions!
DH said it tonight half jokingly, but I know he means it...
Cailen is a chub - I know that - he still doesn't have teeth so he is only eating cereal and baby food....
In the morning he has a bottle when he wakes up, and then at daycare he has about 2-3 bottles in 7-8 hours, and 2 bowls of cereal and a jar of baby food.
He comes home, has cereal and a jar of baby food - sometimes I have leftovers depending on his mood. tonight he didnt leave any leftovers though...
He will have about 1-2 bottles before he goes to sleep, and then another bottle during the night...
But, when he sees someone else eating, he goes nuts.. he tries to grab the food, makes eating noises, and begs like a dog.At daycare he tries to take the food away, knocks over the plates and trays and one time licked the applesauce he knocked over from the floor ( AND )
They told me recently that they have to put him in a chair when the other kids eat because he is always going after their food. We can't eat near him because he grabs at our food all the time.... I said I was going to send in a biter biscuit when the kids are eating real food so he doesnt feel left out...
DH thinks he is too into food...
Does it sound like he has a problem? Or is he just a curious little chubby 8 mt old who just discovered that food tastes good and wants to try everything?

Ok, we have the OPPOSITE problem and I was just about to post about it
That being said, I am sure he is fine. He is exploring new things and enjoying the new food in his life.
How many bottles does he have a day? I think I counted 5-6? How many oz?

DH said " Watch - all the moms are going to say their kids are nothing like him!"
All in all, maybe 30 oz a day - he doesn't always s uck the bottle dry, but sometimes he does... then there are times he never really finishes his bottles, he plays with them!

No I don't think he has a problem, otherwise that means Hannah has one
In all honesty, I think you need to start trying finger foods? How old is he now? He doesn't need teeth - they gum everything. Hannah still only has 4 and she is 13 months old. Start giving him puffs or Cheerios. Give him some of the food you are eating - just cut it up really small. He seems ready!!!
Really young I did Cheerios, Puffs, Bananas, watermelon, peas, cooked carrots, etc.

i think maybe trying more solids, less bottles might help.. i could be wrong, but i think 30 oz is a little more than they really need per day.. so maybe giving him more cereal or baby food will help his food cravings lol he sounds so cute though

I have tried - but he chokes on everything - even really soft stuff - he has gagged and thrown up... I know he wants to eat finger food - when his cereal falls in blobs on the high chair tray, he tries to pick it up with his fingers (its so cute) - but even the softest little piece of bread makes him gag and choke, and its terrifying to me!!!
ETA - he is 8 mts - on Jan 4 he'll be 9 mts - but he even gags and chokes with #3 foods....

i would start with the stage 1 and 2 foods then.. and work your way up to finger foods slowly.. but just as long as he gets more solid yummy tasting food i think he will be happy.

Hmm...my ped told me the opposite My DS usually has 32oz or so of formula a day (a good day or a little less) but formula or breast milk should be their primary form of nutrition during the first year.
Liza, you aren't going to give him meat, right?
ETA: I was also told to keep doing just baby food until 11 months and then SLOWLY introduce table food.

We only do stage 2, but stage 3 makes him gag - if it has a little texture to it, he starts gagging!!! I have given him tastes of hummos when I eat it (which he loves) but I eat mostly veggies - so its hard to let him taste it....

Re: Does Cailen have a problem with food?
Troy is the SAME way! I swear I could ahve written the SAME thing. He could have just eaten, be full (pushing away food/bottle), then I start eating a snack or take a drink from a cup and he FREAKS! Like hasn't eaten in days!
I think most of it is curiosity. We've recently started giving Troy a sippy cup (w/ a little water) to get him used to something other than the bottle. Now, he grabs our cups/glass when we're drinking! He also sipped water thru my straw the other day!!
BTW.... about licking the apple sauce! I almost fell off my chair!!!
Troy usually has 5 or 6, 6 oz bottles/day. He also recently started eating more food....he has 2 tbsp of cereal w/ one container stage 2 fruit for breakfast. Lunch and dinner are the same, 1 full jar of a stage 2 dinner and 1/2 container of stage 2 fruit (or a blob of unsweetened "adult" applesauce)

No... he's my little veggie baby!
Hmm, ok because I know that the Stage 2 meat combos (which look like dog food) fill Christopher up.
He eats a LOT less than Cailen tho, but he also doesn't sleep through the night....so who the frig knows with these kids!

Re: Does Cailen have a problem with food?
You've seen my kid -- show your DH pics of him and he'll know he doesn't have a problem with food.
Seriously though - he's just probably starting to get curious with what people are eating around him. It sounds like he is eating the right amount. I got those teething cookie things - maybe try those - he may just enjoy holding them and sucking on them.

Re: Does Cailen have a problem with food?
hey i just found this and i think it sounds pretty helpful.. hope it helps you some..
"Once your baby reaches six months, you can feed him anywhere from 180-220 ml / 6-8oz at a feeding, and his total formula intake should be roughly 900ml / 32oz per day.
Once you start adding solids to his diet, his daily intake of formula milk should gradually decrease to about 720ml / 24oz. Once your baby is established on solids, he should be having approximately 600ml / 20oz or one pint of formula per day alongside a varied diet until he is a year old. After the age of one, he can move from drinking formula to full-fat cow's milk.
Bear in mind that these are only rough guidelines, and your baby will let you know if he's getting too much or too little formula. If you are not sure, talk with your health-care provider. Don't let solids replace formula too soon
When you introduce your baby to solid foods at around six months, breastmilk or formula should still constitute most of his nutrition until he's a year old. Most babies, when they're getting used to solids, do not eat a wide enough variety of foods to satisfy their growing bodies' nutritional needs. At this stage, his daily intake of formula should still be about 720ml / 24oz. Avoid juice, which doesn't offer nearly the same nutritional value as formula."

He LOOOVES those - I only save them for special occasions - like when we have company and want to eat at the table, or during holidays - so I will bring soem for Xmas, but it looks like I'll send one a day to daycare withh im so he can have one while the kids are eating "real" food!

Honestly, Liza, he sounds completely normal, but ready for tablefood. Ava was completely on tablefood by his age because all she wanted to do was eat.

But how do I do it when he literally chokes, gags, and pukes up stage 3 food?

He has to get used to it, and it might take a while. I think that the difference for us was that I made all her baby food, so I just gradually started making it chunkier. Do you have a blender? If so, then just blend up some of it in the blender and start to thicken it up. Many babies need to work at making their gag reflex recess. A good trick is to thicken up his pureed veggies with cereal and slowly make them lumpier and lumpier.

Re: Does Cailen have a problem with food?
i think its fine for him to still be on stage 2 though... i would just give maybe cereal with fruit for breakfast... 2 jars (a fruit and a veggie) for lunch.. and maybe even cereal with fruit for dinner.. and bottles in between those meals

OK - I'll give it a shot... Thanks!
He will be sucking on a piece of bread, and a piece will come off, and its soft enough for him to not choke on it, but the other day he really started choking on it. It is too unnerving...
