Honestly, Liza, he sounds completely normal, but ready for tablefood. Ava was completely on tablefood by his age because all she wanted to do was eat.

But how do I do it when he literally chokes, gags, and pukes up stage 3 food?

He has to get used to it, and it might take a while. I think that the difference for us was that I made all her baby food, so I just gradually started making it chunkier. Do you have a blender? If so, then just blend up some of it in the blender and start to thicken it up. Many babies need to work at making their gag reflex recess. A good trick is to thicken up his pureed veggies with cereal and slowly make them lumpier and lumpier.

yup thats what i would do too.. gradually make it more textured until he can handle bigger stuff

Totally sounds like my son at that age! He is into foods, he wants real table food! Chat Icon My son started table foods at about that age, and he was a HUGE gagger! Persistence and Patience. Keep trying. Real soft foods. I think we started with things like American cheese and such.

I know this is controversial, but I think that in order for small children to learn how to swallow and move food around their mouths, they will do some gagging and choking, and even a bit of spluttering.

At 8 months, imo, he should be having 3 bottles a day and 3 meals. Stop giving him so much milk and let him eat more solids. I think its good for him to be into food, its pleasurable and teaches him about textures and helps to teach him about what to eat.

I personally think that at 8 months, he should be eating what he wants. If he wants it, give it to him, worry about limiting his food (solid) intake until he is a bit older.

I would say it's time for table food. My DD was a HUGE choker and gagger too. It's just keep trying. They have to get used to it and they will be fine. Just be right there and if you have to fish the piece out before he pukes then do it. But it sounds like little Cailen is yelling FOOOOOOOD ME NOW! (my friends son says this at 2).

PS my dd was never able to handle stage 3 foods other than fruits. She went from 2 to table food.

To me it sounds like a normal child ready to explore food. I wish my son was like that but he never was. I agree with the PP that it is time to start finger foods. You could try Gerber Puffs, they disolve instatnly in your mouth so he doesn't need teeth for that. You could probably give him baby carrots that are steamed (the precut ones they sell in the bags), steamed brocolli florets. I am sure their is more food but that is all I can come up with for now Chat Icon .

I agree with this 100% . 30oz is a lot for an 8month in my opinion. DS was on the same schedule that Rachel postd at 8 months and then by 11 I took out the middle bottle and replaced it with a snack.

Re: Does Cailen have a problem with food?

Noah chokes on everything too , even puffs and I told the ped I was holding off b/c of it and he said to give it to him no matter what next month, that hes not really choking on it, just using his throat to adjust to whats going down it and it sounds like he is choking..

Cailens probably doing the same and making himself throw up as a result of it...

I would think with anything new it takes a whole bunch of tries?

Re: Does Cailen have a problem with food?

Chat Icon Chat Icon That sounds so cute. I don't think he has a problem. But that is coming from a mom of a piglet over here too. We can't eat ANYTHING without her having some. She could have just eaten and as soon as she sees us put something in our mouth, we get "ehhhhhhhhhhhh" her new whine when she wants something. I say it's better than not being able to get your child to eat - people say it's so frustrating!Chat Icon

I agree that it is scary when you think they are choking on something, but more likely, it will teach them how to eat different things.
I always stay close when Taylor has table food to make sure she doesn't choke on anything.
She used to hate puffs and cheerios, but one day, that all changed and now she can't get enough of them.

i would start with the stage 1 and 2 foods then.. and work your way up to finger foods slowly.. but just as long as he gets more solid yummy tasting food i think he will be happy.

We only do stage 2, but stage 3 makes him gag - if it has a little texture to it, he starts gagging!!! I have given him tastes of hummos when I eat it (which he loves) but I eat mostly veggies - so its hard to let him taste it....

DD would gag on stage 3 foods also, so we did stage 2's and table foods. Do you give the Good Evening foods? I found they were more filling than the Gerber stage 2 dinners.

Re: Does Cailen have a problem with food?

not unless these two have the same problem over here.
You have to keep in mind..he has had table food---so he is no fool...He knows what other people eat taste good and he wants some!
I cannot eat breakfast or lunch unless thety are sleeping...or they eat it..
they ate penne cream sauce w.wine and broccolli raab sausage...

hmmm typical baby food..ha but they love stuff like that.
They drink the same amount of bottles as before they ae food and I called the doctor--I thoought it was not normal--and get up at night so I would not worry...

he wants the food...DD was the same way....she was done with baby food around 8 months.....

DS is on the same path...6 months old and the only thing that keeps him calm during feeding time is puffs on his tray. And darn it, he's gettin good at putting them in his mouth!

Re: Does Cailen have a problem with food?

I don't think he has a problem. I think it's great that he's so interested. Daniel wants everything that everyone else has right now- whether it's food or something else. And daycare told me that he's tried to take food off of other babies' trays.

I think that it's just Cailen's growing interest in the world around him. So no, I don't think he has a problem with food.

ETA: Have you tried one of those mesh feeders with him? I'm going to try one with Daniel since he seems more interest in having "real" food than purees when he's with me.

Re: Does Cailen have a problem with food?

maddie is the same way
if she sees us eating she wants to eat too- she comes up to us and says, "ummm" and i give her a little of what we are having.
maddie doesn't have teeth either- but you wouldn't believe all that she can eat without them- chicken, cheerios, pieces of steamed veggies, etc. As long as Cailen knows how to chew, he should be able to start textured foods- even if he doesn't have any teeth.

Re: Does Cailen have a problem with food?

How much cereal is he taking? DD will be 9 months on Sunday. For breakfast she has 4 tbl spoons of ceral and a Jar of stage 2 fruit, and a bottle (@4 oz), lunch she has a stage 2 dinner or veggie and a fruit, bottle (@2-4oz) dinner she has 2 tbl ceral and a stage 2 fruit and usually about a 5 oz bottle. Before bedtime she has and 8 oz bottle and she is down for the night.

Now she does have puffs and juice/water here and there through out the day. I gave her a french fry yesterday and she had some of my pancake the other day, so now I am starting the table food. DD just this past month got used to the puffs, she would gag on them, you just have to keep trying. I did and now she wants to eat like 5 at a time...

you just described my sister when she was a baby...it's a family joke she hates when we talk about itChat Icon

She was a chubster...people had to hide in the kitchen to eat because she wanted everything! When Mr. Softee used to drive by they would turn up the volume on the tv....she was really really cute though!

Now she def does not have a weight problem she looks great!

She did become really picky after about 3 years old.

Re: Does Cailen have a problem with food?

Food is a hard one to figure out because every baby is so different in their needs/wants. I was very suprised to see that you're still giving him a bottle in the middle of the night--I bet you could wean him out of that one now and maybe even change how he gets his bottles during the day because he does sound ready for more table food. DS is getting 4 bottles a day ( 2 6 oz and 2 8 oz and he never finishes any of them--he takes about 20oz a day but I give it all in case he wants it).

We went through a choking phase too. I was giving puffs because I was so worried he was going to choke and he wasn't getting any better with then. Then I started cutting them in 2 and actually prewetting them before I gave them to him, and within 2 days of my doing it that way, he was on a whole dry puff and eating cheerios. Since this day he has never looked back and all he wants is table food now. I can hardly ever get him to eat from a jar. Daycare was getting frustrated too and asked if they could start feeding him from the toddler menu--and that's been going much better for everyone. He has no teeth yet, but it eating cheerios, loves to knosh on those zwiebeck toasts, waffles, english muffins, fruit bits, soft carrots, chop meat, grilled cheese and chicken nuggets. Sounds like he wants table food, just needs the practice. If you're still concerned about the gagging, ask the doc at your 9 month visit. I'm not positive, but I think I read something about learning the swallow and the gag reflex by a certain age...not sure.

Re: Does Cailen have a problem with food?

At daycare today, the teacher gave him one of the other's kids puffs and he ate it no problem!!!! THEN he began crawling to each one of us trying to figure out where that tasty tidbit came from!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon So I'm going to buy some puffs today!

thank you so much for all of your input!!!!

I am going to buy some silken tofu and let him have some of that with some soup he likes...

also, I am going to try to give him cooked broccoli and some vegetarian chicken nuggets...

Some questions though...

When you ladies started your babies with no teeth on chicken nuggets, how small did you make the pieces? What about the broccoli if I cook the hell out of it? Chat Icon

i didnt give hannah nuggets until she was 12 months. she had more teeth then. i would make the pieces small - i read a good guidleine was the size of your pinky fingernail.

also, dont forget that if you are trying new foods, you really should give each new food 3 days or so to make sure there is no allergic reaction.Chat Icon

He sounds normal Chat Icon

Emma drinks 30 ounces day (5 bottles). She eyes my food and tries to get it, but she isn't ready for table foods. I just started the Puffs with her and she doesn't quite "get it" and ends up spitting them out. I've given her the stage 3's though and for the most part eats them without issue. I don't even give her cereal anymore, it's mostly veggies and fruit and some combo jars for dinner and she will never eat more than one jar in a sitting.
