Does everyone's district start on Sept 1st this year?
Before Labor Day?
That seems crazy early.
And of course it's the first year i have to even think or worry about it- because DD is starting K.
Just my luck. 
Why is school starting so early this year?

Does everyone's district start on Sept 1st this year?
We start 9/2 and I was at the school board meeting when they unveiled the calendar. Their explanation was that Labor Day was late this year (which is crap because Labor Day is late every 5 years or so and it's never been an issue).
My feeling is that since Labor Day is late, all 3 fall Jewish holidays fall on weekdays and Easter and Passover are separate - to get a week break in the spring, they had to start early. We also get off the day BEFORE Thanksgiving...
I'm in Rockland and some schools are still starting after Labor Day since it's written in their teacher contracts they can't start beforehand.

Mine starts on Sept 1st also. It's definitely weird starting before Labor Day. I can't remember when it ever did. But...with that said I don't mind. It saves me $ to not have to have him in camp during that time.

Sept 2nd for us. Passover and Easter being separate is what screwed it up. Less time at Christmas too this year. In past years we had 2 full weeks

I guess it is just the way the calendar falls this year. I have no problem with it. I know others who did, already had vacation plans. I am sure the teachers will be aware that there might be less kids that first week.

9/2 for us. I am not on LI and I haven't looked at the full calendar yet but we lost lots of vacation days because we had so many snow days. So I am wondering if that was also a factor.

I'm in PA, we start August 26th. But I love it, they got out of school June 5th! Spring weather is better, so I'd rather them home then lol.

I'm in NJ and DS starts the 9th plus it's half days that week. I have to figure out what to do with him for since camp ends two weeks before!

We ALWAYS start before Labor Day and this past year, we were done about 3 days earlier than other districts who did not.

9/2 for us and I am glad. Camp ends 8/14 for us and I'd rather he go back before Labor Day.

I see a lot of other districts -including NYC- staring later.
Figures, the year my daughter starts K they start school way early.
Ugh, i am not ready for this. This whole public school thing.
I really really considered private K- but I am just delaying the inevitable I guess.

Our district always starts this early, it's so dumb especially with a kindergartener. Just as you get them on the bus and into the groove, you get holidays off...

What's really the big deal? I don't get it.
Where I work, the kids start 9/1, and my DD starts 9/2. Summer was a full 9 weeks. Kids will get out earlier this year than last year. It all evens out in the end.

Where I work, the kids start 9/1, and my DD starts 9/2. Summer was a full 9 weeks. Kids will get out earlier this year than last year. It all evens out in the end.
A lot of people in my district are upset since we have never started before Labor Day.
It screws up a lot of vacation plans since many go away the week before Labor Day - and many had these vacations booked thinking school wouldn't be starting because it never has.
Also - sports start before school starts so it screws up other vacations for those with older kids earlier in the month in August.
It actually works out better for me too - I don't have to send my DS to daycare for a week before school starts.

Exactly. I like to enjoy EVERY.SINGLE second of summer.
I don't like fall
I don't like the school year starting.
It depresses me. Seriously depresses me to the point of seasonal affective disorder
And I feel gyped this year.
We don't get out any earlier either I am sure.

Surprised your districts didn't make a point to let people know. Ours in January was sending emails and notices so people could change vacation plans.
Our district said they did it because this year the kids have 1-2 days off almost every week in September due to the holidays this year. So we start the 2nd but we are off the 7th, 14th, 15th, and the 23rd.
Not sure why people say we get out much earlier this year. We ended on the 26th this past year and the 24th this year. So no big advantage there IMO.
