Re: Does everyone's district start on Sept 1st this year?
I would love to have my DS go back 9/1. Camp ends on 8/14. His dad has him for a week, then I have a week vacation and then...ugh.

Surprised your districts didn't make a point to let people know. Ours in January was sending emails and notices so people could change vacation plans.
Our district said they did it because this year the kids have 1-2 days off almost every week in September due to the holidays this year. So we start the 2nd but we are off the 7th, 14th, 15th, and the 23rd.
Not sure why people say we get out much earlier this year. We ended on the 26th this past year and the 24th this year. So no big advantage there IMO.
My district might have let people know earlier in the year, but we weren't in the district yet. My DD is starting K so the first I heard of it was at her K orientation in May.

See our district handed something out at K registration in January so those parents should have known. But this year we only have two snow days in our calendar and if more are needed they will have to go June 27th and June 28th.

Exactly. I like to enjoy EVERY.SINGLE second of summer. I don't like fall I don't like the school year starting. It depresses me. Seriously depresses me to the point of seasonal affective disorder And I feel gyped this year. We don't get out any earlier either I am sure.
This is me too!!! Plus, DS#1 is starting 1st grade on 9/2, but DS#2 is in daycare in a different district (who follows that district's calendar) so of course, his is closed the week of 8/31-9/4, so we can't even get the benefit of not having to take off the whole week.
I think it stinks b/c I think a lot of people like to use that last long weekend as vacation and would probably add on at least a couple of days the previous week. And it seems silly to have a day off the second week of school. Some LI schools did this last year too - but I guess more decided to do it this year.

We have to check in & drop off school supplies & see the class with the kids on 9/1 but then 9/2, they begin classes.
It's a little strange ending the summer so early but I'm ok with the start date.

What's really the big deal? I don't get it.
Where I work, the kids start 9/1, and my DD starts 9/2. Summer was a full 9 weeks. Kids will get out earlier this year than last year. It all evens out in the end.
A lot of people in my district are upset since we have never started before Labor Day.
It screws up a lot of vacation plans since many go away the week before Labor Day - and many had these vacations booked thinking school wouldn't be starting because it never has.
Also - sports start before school starts so it screws up other vacations for those with older kids earlier in the month in August.
It actually works out better for me too - I don't have to send my DS to daycare for a week before school starts.

We're so the opposite! I HATE every single second of summer and eagerly countdown to fall. And I love the start of the school year, it feels like a second "New Year" to me. I love the weather change, the holidays, all of it.
But I do think it's a little annoying for the kids to have to go back before Labor Day, I know so many people that have their last summer vacations messed up. A few just won't be sending their kids the first week back. The first year my DD started school two years ago they didn't start until the 8th, that was a little better!

I know. Also - Easter is in March and Passover is in late April.
Our calendar wasn't released until late February - a lot of people already had no refundable deposits down at places and couldn't move to an earlier week.

I love the summer but barely get to enjoy it because I work but soooo ready for the kids to go back as they are bored and getting on each other's nerves and mine lol. I get if you are on vacation and already had plans but otherwise, I see nothing wrong with going back that week. The kids don't care so not sure why the parents do.
