My friend's son goes to South Shore for the summer program. They charge $100 for the test and I think $100 per week for the program. She said he had such a great time - it's a very active program with science experiments, art projects (like painting like Jackson Pollack) - they make learning a lot of fun. We may have DS tested because they go to school together now and have so much fun - it would be nice for them to go to the summer program together.
we can afford THAT... it definitely looks like a promising program... have to wait until Eryk is older and well see if we think he'd fit in....
but holy typos, batman! there are some grammar errors on their webpage (ex. built a crewed spaceship I pray it was the webmaster's fault...) Leslie, you MUST go on their site for some laughs

What happens in an "elite" pre-school that doesn't happen in a "regular" one?
In Manhattan, the elite nursery schools are competitive to get accepted into. They will interview the parents and observe children to see how they interact with other children and their perceived intelligence at a very young age.
If you don't go to the right nursery school, then it is difficult to get into the right private primary school, etc. The schools have supposedly higher quality faculty and better curriculum.
The tuition also costs an arm and a leg.
Hahah I worked at an ELITE nursery school and they accepted everyone...LOL
Its a big show they put on, its ran like a bussiness and their number one ineterest is $$$ not your child...I
ETA tuition was 15,000 per year
Lol!! It's like some modeling agencies that accept everyone even though they tell girls they have "something special"...YEAH they have thousands of daddy's dollars to hand over
But in all fairness...I did watch a program last year on the manhattan preschools...I could not get over the process these parents went through to ensure their child was accepted to the special elite schools. I was pretty disgusted by the pressure on these little babies....its PRESCHOOL for petes sake!!

Crashing here... Sorry to disagree but a crewed spaceship should not be spelled crude. A crewed spaceship is a specific type of spaceship, similarly to a manned spaceship.

OK, I see your point... but how do you 'make a crewed spaceship'? To me, you can make a spaceship.... there can be a crewed spaceship... and you can only make AND crew a spaceship.... but making a crewed spaceship is a little off IMO..... I wll defer to your opinion.... I'm certain your judgement is better than mine....

I never understood the "better" faculty part. Highly qualified teachers want to be in public schools where the pay and benefits are better.
that being said - there is such a surplus of elem teachers that my son's daycare teacher is a certified teacher and she definitely ups the level for his class compared to what I hear other preschools do.

My son's daycare also has several certified teachers working there. He's doing SO well there.

In a crewed spaceship, it probably has people in it meaning the top may come off or you can see people inside of it possibling set with fishing wire so they can appear to be in 0 gravity.

That is one of the most disgustingly rude comments I have EVER read on here. Do you know ANYTHING about private schools and their teachers? We tend to teach at those schools because they actually value the children that walk through the door and we believe in what we do. And how do you know what my paycheck looks like? I am HIGHLY qualified to be teaching and no amount of money could ever put me in a public school. I'm so incredibly disgusted right now.

Re: Does LI have elite private nursery schools like in Manhattan?
throw another school out there... long island schol for the gifted (LISG) has a preschool program for 4 year olds. but you need an IQ test to even get a look see there. they also go through 9th grade in the school, and when the child is done with 9th grade there they are technically done with a regents level diploma. they can go back to their own district for all AP and elective classes until they graduate high school. just to jump the gun a few years.

My DD won't be going to an "elite" school but she will be going to a bilingual one. It's $$$ but to me it is worth every penny.
That is, if they don't have to shut down before then...

I'm sorry, but I have to jump in here...if you're so happy where you are, why do you take such offense to her comment? See, that's what I don't understand. Yes, it's a sweeping generalization, but ESPECIALLY on LI, many, many teachers aspire to teach in public school.
I taught in a LI Catholic school for 3 years before moving out-of-state, and it was my ultimate goal to land a public school job on LI. That doesn't mean that I don't care about the kids who walk into my classroom every day--I just felt that I deserved a "piece of the pie" that public school teachers on LI obviously enjoy.
I guess I just at your response because a simple, 1-2 sentence response in a much less "going for the jugular" fashion would have set her straight, AND shown the OP how happy you are to teach in a private school. JMO.

Maybe things changed, and certain schools are different, but there were many uncertified teachers where I went, and I recently consulted at an expensive elite school that hired uncertified teachers.
And it was disgusting what that teacher did to me - it has nothing to do with you as a teacher or where you work. You wouldn't have done that, and you would be a good teacher wherever you work!
My true colors always show. I share my experiences very openly. If I don't know or have experience, I keep my mouth shut.

Why do I care? Because it's a nasty comment about me and my colleagues. I found the comment to be disgustingly rude. Why do you care how I feel? We could go round and round on that, couldn't we? What would the responses be like if I said that all NYC cops work in the city because they're not qualified to work on LI? I think people would be up in arms. And while we're at it, why are YOU taking what I said personally? I never said you don't care about the kids you teach, did I? It made me angry, and I don't need to justify why. I don't do my job to "get a piece of the pie" as you put it. Maybe many people do, but many, many independent school teachers do their job because they whole-heartedly agree with the mission of their school and what they do there for children. And it annoys me when people discuss things like they "know" all about it when they really don't.

Different strokes for different folks...but parts of this thread make me This coming from a former gifted and talented student who's parents could not afford one stitch of formal educational teachings before kindergarten. Let a kid be a kid for goodness sake. Life will be competitive enough when it needs to be. No need to force it at age 3.
