Does size matter?
DH and I were having a discussion the other night about Mandisa on AI. I was saying how I think she has a real shot, but DH disagreed. He said that America would never actually make a woman of her size their American Idol. I brought up Aretha Franklin and her fame, but DH reminded me that she was much smaller when she started out. He thinks that if Aretha had been the size she is today she wouldn't be the star she is.
For the record, I think Mandisa is beautiful and more improtantly she is a great singer. I am just curious what your opinions are on this topic. Shouldn't talent mean more then weight?

Re: Does size matter?
i agree with your DH. Ideally fame would be based on talent, but just look what is out there today.

Re: Does size matter?
Ruben was BIG and he was a man......and what is he up to now? So who knows...I go according to talent. If you notice, Simon (the only honest one there) is always looking away when the contestants sing....I do the same thing when I watch....I close my eyes so I can actually HEAR them and not see them....

Re: Does size matter?
I love Mandisa! I think she has a wonderful voice. I think that if she was a white woman, that heavy but had a fantastic voice she never would have made it past the first round.

Unfortunately in our society, there are so many stereotypes and prejudices..... But Reuben won and he was much bigger in size than Mandissa.....
I brought that up too, but DH said that it is more exceptable For a man to be overweight then for a woman.

Re: Does size matter?
The politically correct answer is of course, talent should mean more than weight.
But honestly, I dont think Mandisa has ANY chance of winning. Most people wont look past her weight to even hear her voice.
I know Ruben was overweight but they dubbed him a "teddybear" to make it acceptable and cute. I think for women its much harder to overcome.

Re: Does size matter?
I personally love her and would never judge her based on her weight, BUT unfortunately a lot of people do this. It's not just weight, it's appearance too. For example, Bucky. Certainly not top three material, but he's not bad either. Unfortunately people take one look at him and "hear" bad singing. It's such a shame. It's a weird issue though, because you look at season 2 with Reuben winning. I may get flamed here, but overweight men don't seem to be judged as critically as overweight women...

I was prepared to answer a completely different question
Yes it should matter. Haven't heard any of the above sing since I don't watch AI. Unfortunately, "making a star" is based on looks.

Ok- so that is one woman. Think abotu how many other women out there are trying to make it. Not to mention, she is very beautiful.
The reality of the matter is that female musicians these days have to be pretty or sexy to get any air time. The same cannot be said for men. They are just a product- and shows like AI just prove that musicians and bands who are played on the radio are not organically made- they are selected based on looks first and then talent.

Re: Does size matter?
I think it does matter, not just on AI. I'm a member of another board for Curves (woman's gym) and a lot of the women on the baord have commented that people treat them completely differently now that they have lost weight, especially in the workplace.

I always liked Clay better. I liked his voice better and he has gotten more famous and has more public outings than Reuben. Perhaps he won but I don't think he has gotten far......so does it have to be because of his weight?.......
That he(Reuben) hasn't gotten as far? I don't think that his weight mattered. I think Clay's music has a broader audience, but Reuben's was nominated for a Grammy.

Re: Does size matter?
Frankly.... I think AI in general is a total waste.
Its very likely that no AI contestant will EVER achieve the success as the first winner (Kelly Clarkson) did.
Look what happened to every single winner after her. Did they "make it big"? Nope.
I saw a video that came in my DJ video package by Ruben.... and I LMAO. It was horrible.
I am surprised that the show is doing as well as it has. If it wasn't for Simon's nasty comments (which is why we all watch the show - lets get real)... the show would have been long cancelled.

I agree with DJPill.
We all watch it for the entertainment value, not b/c we think anyone's gonna be a star.
Which is why I stop watching after the auditions. I only like to see the people who ****

Kelly Clarkson wasn't thin or sexy when she was on AI. I believe she won b/c of her voice and her personality.
And I'll throw a couple of other names of successful female artists who weren't/aren't exactly skinny: Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige, Trisha Yearwood. Faith Evans and MJB have definitely lost a significant amount of weight over the years, but they didn't start out thin.
And to be honest, I think Mandisa IS the most beautiful on AI. I remember saying to my DH "Wow, what a face! She's beautiful."

I think she is beautiful! And SOOOOOOOOOOOOO talented. Most Americans are not the size 0 that most celebs are. So I don't think that it's a problem

Yes. They were originally pushing it as this show would produce the "next big star". That phase is over... and if anyone watches it now... its definitely for the "entertainment value" of it.
I have gotten several requests for Kelly Clarkson in my DJing time. Never EVER once heard a request byClay, Ruben, or whoever those two other women that won it the past two years.

Re: Does size matter?
I think it does. there have been studies that show overweight people usually don't rate as high on job interviews, even when they have the same qualifications as other candidates. It is just another prejudice, IMO.
I think performers are judged even more harshly, based on their appearance. I don't think Kathy Bates would have done the hot tub scene in "About Schmidt" earlier in her career.......

Re: Does size matter?
Also, in entertainment, you can't make it on looks alone (usually), nor can you make it with singing talent alone
