Re: Does size matter?
Kerry Underwood (is that her name??). She is popular in country music. I think she was nominated for AMA's or grammy's in country version..
I personally like Mandessa and would vote for her. So, no size wouldn't matter to me at least. But, I love Chris more!!

Kelly Clarkson wasn't thin or sexy when she was on AI. I believe she won b/c of her voice and her personality.
And I'll throw a couple of other names of successful female artists who weren't/aren't exactly skinny: Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige, Trisha Yearwood. Faith Evans and MJB have definitely lost a significant amount of weight over the years, but they didn't start out thin.
And to be honest, I think Mandisa IS the most beautiful on AI. I remember saying to my DH "Wow, what a face! She's beautiful."
Kelly and Trisha weren't stick thin, but both were closer to average. MJB and Missy Elliot started out in a different genre of music then what AI seems to stress. I think that if they had tried to go mainstream pop their success wouldn't have been as great.

I don't ever recall Mary being big at all.... even in 1992-1994 when she first started.
Look at her "Real Love" video. She definitely doesn't look like someone that "has a few extra pounds".
But you know who you can DEFINITELY add to that list..... MARTHA WASH!
Here is a little bit of good reading:
She was definitely NOT skinny... but she had a fabulous voice singing for C&C Music Factory and Black Box. But because she was overweight... They decided to NOT put her in the "Gonna Make You Sweat" video and used someone else (Zelma Davis) to fill her vocal role (someone much thinner).
Zelma Davis actually sang the rest of C&C's songs on their debut CD... but the fact that in their initial video they did NOT want Martha shown in their video (maybe to maintain an image?).
Martha also sang the lead vocals to all of Black Box's songs which included "Everybody Everybody", "Strike it Up", and "I Don't Know Anybody Else". But Martha appeared in NONE of those videos... they were lipsynced by Katrine Quinol.
When Clivilles & Cole had their own song "Pride: a Deeper Love"... Martha sang vocals on that... but Martha was also in the video (the RIGHT way to do it).
This happened after she sued all these record labels to get proper credits for her work.

Re: Does size matter?
AI is a popularity contest...not a singing contest.... it is possible medessa could win..Ruben has won so you can say that Medesa could win. Simon is correct in the fact that America typically (steroytpe coming) want a nice face with a knock out body which wasn't Medessa when she first got her chance.
keep in mind, whom ever wins, has a record deal with Mr. Cowell for a couple of records. Ok, yeah, they can sing, but can they write and be creative with music? that is a real test of a singer. All they are doing is singing songs that are already famous, etc... Sing a song you wrote and tell me how good they are then....
Kelly Clarkson wasn't that great when she first won. Only after she was done with Cowell's contact, she became great having more freedom to do stuff she wanted to do.

Re: Does size matter?
I do not watch AI so I dont know who you are referring to but I will have to say that yes unfortunatley size does matter.
I am plus size and I can write a book on how differently I am treated in day to day situations based on my weight. Believe me, I am not trying to tell you a sob story but its a whole other world out there for us.
I also think its more acceptable for a man to be plus sized as compared to a woman. There is a double standard there for sure.
I am sure if that contestant were to win they newspaper headlines would mention something about her weight. What about when magazines talk about Kate Winslet for example its about how she doesnt care that shes plus sized, blah blah blah she looks good. And she is not even big but bigGER than the average skinny celebrity.

I totally remember that. That was quite a scandal at the time.

As far as AI goes I don't think it matters. She made it this far, that was the hard part. Overall in society yes size does matter.

Re: Does size matter?
In regards to AI...yes they're technically supposed to be looking for the next "pop star" which usually equates to the next Britany Spears and such, so yes I believe there's a certain "look" they're aiming for. They're basically looking for a performer/entertainer, not a true artist.
(I don't watch AI b/c I think 99% of the performers s*ck. They have no presence/image, nor a voice to at least carry them. )
Also, something to consider, who are the majority of voters?? I doubt it's men b/w the ages of 16-30. I would imagine the majority are adolescent girls and I don't think they're as critical about a performer's appearance.
Look at season 1's Ryan Starr. She had the look and her voice wasn't awful, but the voters evidently didn't like her, so you never know.
And look at Clay Aiken...how did he become a runner up!?! I don't think he fits the "pop" mold.
In response to the "true test of a singer" being able to write their own music, I don't agree with that. There are some amazing performers out there who's voices I would surely miss if it wasn't for someone else writing the lyrics. I don't think a voice and writing lyrics/music necessarily need to go hand in hand.
