Does this seem a bit much?

I just got an email from a mom from my DS preschool class. She is asking for a $50 donation for gift cards for the teacher and 3 assistants. Don't get me wrong, that's how much I would spend anyway. But there are 24 kids in class. That's $480 for the teacher and $240 for each assistant. I don't have any teacher friends who wind up with those amounts. I guess she's figuring nôt everyone will chip in?

Re: Does this seem a bit much?

I collected last year and only asked for $15 each. When I saw this email I was shocked. I didn't know if it was too much or if I had collected too little last year.

Honestly I even think that $10 is good. I'm sure not everyone can afford to give $50 so yes it seems excessive to me.

Gift giving to teachers is new to me - this is DDs first year in nursery school. No one has organized a collection, so I am giving the assistants $10 and the teacher $20. That is the same thing they are asking you to give your preschool teachers so when you look at the breakdown I do not think it is too much. But again, this is the first time I am doing this so I do not know what is considered the norm

DD Has 1 teacher and 1 assistant. Last year she had 1 teacher and 2 assistants. It's a catholic school. They collected $60- $20 per teacher. 18 kids in the class...afterwards they told us that every student contributed, so each teacher got a $360 cash gift! I thought that was insane...but that's how they do it at her school. I'm sure they will collect $40 this year and split it again. There are 24 kids in her class this year! That's $480 per teacher!

Way excessive! I think asking for more than $10 is in poor taste.

That's way too much! I would think $100 for the teacher and maybe around $25-30 for each assistant would be a fine gift and very much appreciated. Is she including the cost for throwing class parties in that $50 amount? That's the only way it would be justified. Or will she be saving half of the money for end of the year gifts? When I was teaching I usually got a $100 gift card from the class at Xmas and another at the end of the year, and I always thought that was so generous! If I had received any more than that I would have felt uncomfortable accepting it.

Eh, I don't know. I spend about 10-15 on each teacher/assistant. So if I had 4 people to give to, 50 would sort of make sense?

my dd's preschool class is asking for the same amount. $50...there is the head teacher and 3 assistants. There are 20 kids in her class.

I didn't think that was so bad for 4 people.

They are asking for more than that from my DS's preschool.
They end up buying a gift for everyone & a cash gift.
Not everyone contributes, but I'm asked to give even more at work. Chat Icon

That is way too much money. 24 kids, 1 teacher, and 3 assistants -- $10/student is more than enough. Assuming that everyone in the class contributed, that would be $240 collected. I would do either 1) a teacher gift of $150 and the remaining $90 would give each assistant a $30 gift or giftcard or 2) teacher gift of $120 and each assistant a $40 gift.

24kids ... maybe $10 per.. at most? You know some won't pay up so I average 15 out of 24 will pitch in so $150?

I'd be saying "No thank you, that's way out of my budget. I will get them a gift on my own. Thank you"

I don't even think it's an issue of what you would spend normally for your own gift. I think a collective gift of more than say $100 to $150 to the teacher is just plain excessive.
