$50 covers 4 people? No, I don't think that's excessive.

I disagree. Wait till you have 3 kids in school. That's $150 just for teacher gifts and I'm not cheap by any means!
We have a mandated amount that we ask for. $10 for the teacher and $5 for assistants. As class mom I will usually add more to cover kids who don't participate or to at least make the gift a nice even number, plus a token gift from my child.
$50 is unheard of even in my snobby catholic school
ETA - let's not forget we still have end of the year gifts and teacher appreciation day! It really adds up.

Re: Does this seem a bit much?
Well if you are talking about 4 people no not really. My old preschool four years ago asked $40 for one head and three assistants, but we were asked not to give private gifts. There were 20 kids in that class. My younger daughter's preschool collected $20 for the head teacher, but then everyone gave private gifts, and one parent insisted on taking an additional collection because she felt it was "not enough".
I would think if you give $50, there is no need to do additional gifts.

I don't think it's a matter of how many kids you have; any way you slice it,$50 split between 4 people is not a lot IMO. Besides, if you had 3 kids I'm sure each one does not have 4 teachers, which would lower the amount you spend.

Yes I think too much! I would think half that or less would be reasonable.

Re: Does this seem a bit much?
I think it's a lot to ask for from one family. I understand that $50 for 4 people is only $12.50 per person, which is not a lot. However, not everyone can afford to give $50 and it kinds of excludes those families from contributing anything (meaning if it were only $10 being asked for, they would be more likely to contribute).
I always wonder how "class" gifts are given - is it presented from the entire class (even those that didn't contribute) or only with the names that those that did contribute?
Things like this is why I just give my own separate gifts to teachers.

At my DS preschool I actually asked the office manager this question last year. She said to sign the card from only the kids who contributed. I just recently did a collection for my older DS soccer coach. It's a recreation league and I know that not all of the families had the $10 to spare. I signed that card from the team.

Plenty of people these days have kids close together and have multiples. My DD has a set of twins in her K class, and they have a younger sibling in nursery - so for that mom yes she has 3 children that each have a main teacher and 2 assistants this year.
We can agree to disagree but $50 even for 4 people x's 20 some odd children in the class ( I'm sure it is at least that many for them to have 3 assistants) is insane.

Re: Does this seem a bit much?
I'm looking at it that I would be spending that anyway at least $20 to teacher and $10 each for the three assistants so I would contribute it. It a nice size gift for them in the end if a lot of people contribute. I do feel it would be nice and no big deal to include any contribution for those that can't afford to give $50.

Does this seem a bit much?
Weren't people recently saying in another thread that they gave $50 per teacher (not as a group gift, but as an individual gift) as the standard gift? If that's the case, $50 for 4 is a bargain.

Does this seem a bit much?
When I was in school, I know not everyone gave gifts. Mom would send me to school with something like a coffee mug or dish filled with candy. So, I am kind of surprised by all the high teacher gifts. But, since you say you would give that much anyway, maybe it's reasonable.

Does this seem a bit much?
I am one of the class moms, we asked for $15 per child for the head teacher. We figured not everyone will contribute, so that will give the teacher a decent gift. I also plan on spending another $10-$15 on her for my own personal gift. I will spend about $20 on the assistant. The contribution is optional, if you cant afford to contribute do something on your own.

I think it is when you see how much each person is getting as a gift. It's unheard of for a teacher to get hundreds of dollars as a holiday gift from the class. That's INSANE. And usually teacher assistants get less then the teacher. $10 per child is more typical and the majority goes to the teacher, the rest to the assistants. I am FAR from cheap but I wouldn't contribute $50, a gift that large is EXCESSIVE for any teacher.

At my kids Daycare I give $50 for each teacher and assistant teacher so no I don't think that's a lot for 4 teachers.

It's not a lot but adds up to a lot. You may want to suggest to whoever is in charge that they look into district policy about gifts too- I was a city teacher and we were not allowed to accept anything with a monetary value of more than $5. That was a few years ago so the amount may be more now but you don't want to cause an issue for the teacher by giving large gifts. Some administrators can be petty over stuff like that.

I was just thinking the same thing. $50 for 4 people seems reasonable to me. I don't either and I would be THRILLED if they asked for money because last year in nursery school (at a Catholic school that I paid for) I gave the teacher and assistants more than that. And I'll be gifting more for his 1 teacher and assistant this year.

Yes, this seems high. I would think that most people will opt out and get their own, smaller gift for the teachers.
