Does this sound about right? Fence quote
We are looking to fence in our yard, it is 60 feet across the back, 80 feet across the side, and then 14 feet with gates on both sides of the house. We figured using lower wuality Lowes materials it would be about $1200 and then we would need to fabricate the gates, rent a flat bed, rent a digger and any other incidentals. DH cousin wants $750 for labor, so we figured all said and done, probably about $2500. Plus time and it getting done on someone else's schedule. We got a professional quote for $4800 plus tax, so roughly $5000. We could save a lot doing it in our own, but it's going to be a drawn out hassle, I know that. So do you think it's worth it to save the money and deal with all the aggravation, or just pay someone to do it and be done with it in 2 days?

I priced it both ways when I was putting in my fence. The professional quality material and installation wasn't that much more an the difference in quality is HUGE.
Plus with a fence company in a few hrs it is done. It will take you so much more time to do it yourself.

You can't compare lowes quality to contractor grade, I'd go professional for this and have it done in a day. You'd be confident that your fence would have a better chance of holding up against inclement weather and wind....you shouldn't be paying taxes on the fence since it's a home improvement.

Re: Does this sound about right? Fence quote
Really?!? Because the quote definitely showed the price for the job and says "plus tax"

I am 99% sure but let me go back and check my quotes....there's a nys tax form that you get to hold on to for your records but I'm almost positive there's no tax.

I think it has to be permanent. A fence I don't think falls into that category.

No sales tax on fence installs, assuming you are either installing new or replacing the entire existing fence.
Tell the contractor sales tax does not apply.

As long as it is a capitol improvement (must apply to these 3 things) which a fence is
•It substantially adds to the value of the real property, or appreciably prolongs the useful life of the real property. •It becomes part of the real property or is permanently affixed to the real property so that removal would cause material damage to the property or article itself. •It is intended to become a permanent installation.
However, the materials is sales taxable...it is the labor that cannot be taxed. You need to fill out the ST 120.1 form and give it to your contractor...he's still going to pass the cost of sales tax onto you for material but in a different way on the invoice.
