Does your 3 year old know how to...

zip their own jacket?

My older DD learned this skill when she was four and her pre-k teacher taught the class how to zip.

My younger DD has been zipping her jacket for a few months now (she'll be 4 next month) and she taught herself.

I told my friends (who have DC the same age), "I don't want to brag, but..." Chat Icon and they all said that yes, 3 year olds should be zipping their jackets. However, they never said THEIR kid was zipping...hmmmm...Chat Icon

So tell me...is my child a prodigy? Chat Icon

My older DD couldn't until she was about four but my younger DD(ms. independant) could do it since she was about 2 1/2.

Charlie will be 3 in June and has been zipping and unzipping for a while now. She's Miss Independent though - she gets herself dressed, shoes (albeit velcro) included.

My 4 year old taught my 3 year old to do it. My 4 year old taught herself shortly after turning 4.

I assume you mean actually putting the pieces together and then pulling it up - not just pulling the zipper up and down correct?

Re: Does your 3 year old know how to...

DD is 4 and she has been doing this since she was 3-3.5 but not consistently. I think the big thing with these skills is that some kids can do them and will do them every day and others have impatient parents (like meChat Icon ) who hinder when they think they help.

My son is 3.5 and he is just getting it now. He has been trying for a long time but had issues with his bulky bubble winter jacket. Now he has mostly been wearing hoodies and can do it by himself (although now that he has accomplished it and knows he can - he is more lazy about actually doing it - such a boy!). I thought my older son did it by 3.5 as well but who knows...it's all a blur (he is 6 now).

Re: Does your 3 year old know how to...

My DS is 3.5. He can zip some of his jackets but, not others. Depends on how the zipper is

ETA: I agree with the above poster - its probably a function of how much they are left to do on their own. I always do everything for DS b/c I am always rushing! The day I realized he could do this he actually said to me - no - I can do it myself! And, he could! Go figure Chat Icon Oh and, I am referring to actually putting the pieces together, connecting the zipper etc. not just pulling up and down.

nope, not even close. I think they are just being lazy so I will have to work on this with them. DS2 will be 4 in MAy and DD3 is 3.

Re: Does your 3 year old know how to...

No, she says she can't. She will try once in a while. She is NOT a very independent type, which really bugs me - I get impatient and have to remind myself that she is only 3. (Well 4 in June but...)

Re: Does your 3 year old know how to...

yes.

Dd can connect the part at the bottom and pull it up, all on her own.

But she is miss super independent and has to do everything on her own.

ETA; she is 3.5, and only just started doing this a few months ago.

DS is 3.5 and he has been able to zip his own jacket for a while now. I think they taught him in daycare. If not I have no idea where he learned it because I didn't teach him! Chat Icon

can she have a talk with Erik? Chat Icon

He does not zipper, nor is he all that independent when getting dressed

Re: Does your 3 year old know how to...

My daughter learned to zip her jacket and button most of her coats at 3.5. She is very independent though. She basically gets herself fully dressed, from underwear to shoes and coat, and she is not even 4 yet. To tell you the truth, she freaks me out... Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETS: the reason she freaks me out is because my oldest is a boy and he didn't start dressing himself fully until he was 5. I think it's the boy and girl thing... Boys generally do everything later than girls.

Don't get too excited - she doesn't put the zipper together and then zip, I start it for her. I overlooked that when answering the question bc it's second nature Chat Icon

And no, no talks! Any time they talked, one of them stopped doing what they gave the pep talk on (sleep comes to mind)! lol
