Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
Question- does anyone know? As a patient do you have a right to your test results? Can they hold them hostage like that?
Like if you said- I'm not coming in, give me my results. Send them to me.
Do they have a right to say no and hold them hostage?

Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
No and that's ridiculous. To me, unless there is something wrong that needs to be discussed, there is no reason to make someone come in for blood results other than to bill an insurance carrier and collect a co-pay.
AND THIS is what is happening with medicine now that the likes of Pro-Health, Northwell, Stony Brook, etc. are taking over every practice. They, and by "they" I mean the business administration not the practicing physicians, are going to incorporate and enforce corporate protocols so they can continue to generate profits to the inconvenience and even detriment of patients. When I had a high risk pregnancy, I was referred to this terrific MFM doc. My OB just told me that they can no longer refer to the doctor and he can not treat their patients because my OB is pro-health and the MFM is Northwell. Socialized medicine here we come!

Most labs now have a patient portal so you can access your own results. But as a general concept, I think if you got on the phone with your doctor, he/she would be hard pressed to not discuss them with you.

Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
I feel like there needs to be a law about this. Like a HIPPA law. YOUR results, YOUR body, you have a right to them and they shouldn't be held hostage.

Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
My OB/GYN does this. So I schedule the appointment. Then my blood/pap, etc results post on my patient portal and if they're normal, I cancel the appointment. There's no need to shell out a co-pay for something I can get myself for free!

There are. You can put a request in writing to receive any and all of your medical record.
The number of regulations in place for exactly this is insane. I work in oncology research and you cannot fathom the amount of red tape we go through. Patients are well protected. You should see the crap we go through to make sure patients are informed and protected. And every week a new regulation. I groan every time I see an email from thr NIH because I know it’s more work!

Well that's good to know. Then everyone here who is having that issue should know that they have these rights and should be able to get their blood work results without having to go in

Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
That’s crazy. It’s hard enough for me to carve out time to make it to the original appointment let alone go back for blood work results. I work and have kids. Plus squeezing in vet apts for the dog and getting my oil changed on my car etc. I would be livid if my doctors started doing this.

Yeah come to think of it, I got my cancer diagnosis over the phone.
Me too & that is the first thing thought of when I read this. Can't be a HIPPA violation. I actually never went back to that dr. ( she wasn't an oncologist- she reffered me to a specialist.)

My mom did too, 16 years ago. Kind of glad it was that way because we were home with her when her primary called.
I'd be pissed to have to take time off of work just to get regular test results. I schedule a doctor day, where I try to squeeze in as many appointments as possible, to minimize the time I have to take off of work. I live in Queens, my docs are in Nassau county. So it's orthopedist, gyn, mammo/sono. Cardiologist is a late afternoon appointment in Queens on my way home from work, so that's not bad, dentist too. I don't bother with a primary anymore. Haven't found one that has the right balance of office hours / front desk appeal / doctor appeal.

Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
My GP & Ob/Gyn will tell me over the phone. My urologist generally just posts on the patient portal, but will discuss on the phone if I call & ask for results. No way I'd have time to go back to be told "yup... looks good".
I know I've been given paperwork that asks for permission to call with results & at what phone number & also asks if they can speak to another person about medical info. That form would satisfy the HIPAA question I would think?

Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
Depending on what it is, I prefer to get the result in person so if I have a question I’m not waiting for the dr to call me back after receiving the info from a nurse. An example........ when I go for my yearly physicals I go for the blood work ahead of time at my local lab (I have the dr mail me a script)... then when I show up for my appt, my dr has the results while I’m in front of him. If cholesterol is borderline (for example) I can ask my questions while I’m in front of him rather than play phone tag.

Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
No they don't & if they did, I'd be switching practices or creating a scene. It was most likely a pain for me to make the original appt with getting a babysitter for the baby or taking a day off of work. The portal is the best. I can print out my own records as they are posted. If I ever want to leave practices, i have them already & not be charged .75 per page for my own records.

Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
All results are available online once doc signs off in them. I always get a call from my daughters pediatrician as soon as she gets results which includes late night weekend when she’s just home with her own family. Other results I get emailed from the doc. Like pap....she said looks beautiful lol

Re: Does your dr make you come in to get bloodwork results?
Nope. I just had bloodwork done this week and the doctor called the next morning with results. Also most of my doctors are on the same portal so I can access the results.

You have a right to get them from the lab. In NY, you have to wait a few days to give the doctor a chance to tell you the results and then you can get them. Mine come automatically through the Quest app. I think most doctor offices will give results by phone now, but I used to have a doctor tha made me come in.
