Does your RE suggest a # of embies to put back?
DH and I always said 2 but Ive read on other board that based on my age the dr would suggest 1.
Is that true? Im 29. What would be the reason to only put back 1 if we're prepared for multiples.
Can you put back 2 anyway?

I'm 29 and Dr. Brenner suggested two. They actually put back 3 this last cycle.

Re: Does your RE suggest a # of embies to put back?
I think it also depends on your diagnosis. We are dealing with male factor, and when I started this process the RE only wanted to put back 1. I strongly disagreed so they put back 2, and that cycle didn't work. They put back 2 the next time with no issues, and I ended up with quads (my DS and triplets, they became blighted ovums). Now when he wants to put back 2 I remind him of the quads and he says oh no, absolutely only 1
I was 30 for my first cycle, now 32

We also have male factor. I have no known issues-as of yet- the first cycle didnt work b/c they didnt implant? Sorry-im an IVF novice-i need it broken down for me lol next cycle was 2 and became 4?!! one was your son and then triplets? How did that happen? Also what is a blighted ovum? Again, sorry this is new! Hmm.. so I guess if you had to do it again, you would only do 1? Now Im getting nervous!

Re: Does your RE suggest a # of embies to put back?
I think it mostly depends on your diagnosis. I was 26 with my first IVF and we put 3 back based on several factors. The triplets were a result of 2 embryos that implanted (one that split)

The plan was 2, we only have male issues, and unfortunately we only ended up with 3 embryos in total. I didn't want to freeze just one nor did I want to discard it. So we transferred them all

That was us too, minus the male issues. We didn't have any left to freeze and they were a day 3 transfer.
For my next IVF we froze 14, so now we are doing 2 at a time.

Well, with our first cycle up until the very morning of the transfer the RE was pushing for one. We were adamant about 2 (we were prepared for twins), and he lectured us about it, lol. You can go into early labor, the divorce rates are higher with multiples, yada yada yada. We put back 2 and they didn't implant. I thought for sure I would be pregnant with that cycle, but I didn't take it as easy as I should have.
The next cycle the RE was on board with putting back 2. One of those embryos became my DS, and the other embryo split twice, resulting in triplets (which were blighted ovums). A blighted ovum is basically a pregnancy that results in a sac with no baby. The sacs kept growing along with my DS, and eventually they became absorbed into my body (somewhere between 16-20 weeks).
Because I have a DS already, I am only putting 1 back. I had an FET cycle in September with one embryo, and I did get pregnant but I miscarried a few weeks ago.

Re: Does your RE suggest a # of embies to put back?
For some reason, the chances of an embryo splitting & creating multiples are higher with IVF. So for me, I'm only comfortable putting one back and ending up with a singleton, or possibly twins (or triplets again, who knows ).

Re: Does your RE suggest a # of embies to put back?
We are only allowed to transfer 2. But with the FET, an option of transferring 3 has been discussed. It depends on your doc and like PP mentioned, diagnosis, how embies are left, quality, etc.

Re: Does your RE suggest a # of embies to put back?
We were only allowed to transfer 2. Both implanted, one was my 6m old DD, the other blighted ovum. So i would really always recommend at least 2 if they are perfect. If they are lower quality you can consider more but if they are perfect then I wouldn't do more than 2. If we have to do an FET for baby #2 (still hoping that maybe I'll have a normal cycle after all of this ) then we will likely transfer 2 again. If I was going for it a third time then i MIGHT consider one... but since I will be older by then two might still be the right number.
Anyway your RE should be the one making the final determination, although depending on your issues they may or may not give you a choice. It depends heavily on the quality of the embies and your individual issues.

Re: Does your RE suggest a # of embies to put back?
My DH and I were prepared to put back 2. The RE that did the transfer (someone else at the practice, not my RE), urged us very strongly to only do 1. I was disappointed at the moment and felt changing our mind in the 11th hour was too much. But, I'm now 17 weeks with one baby and very happy. So, your RE may be aggressive with you at 29 to only put back 1, but it depends also on your health and reason for IVF.

Re: Does your RE suggest a # of embies to put back?
My old doctor pressured me into one. It seemed pointless. I argued the point and we did 2.
My new doctor suggested 2 and we went with that.

Re: Does your RE suggest a # of embies to put back?
does putting back two decrease your chances of any embies implanting?
this info is so helpful. We are prepared for twins.. but more than that, Im not sure. I also dont want to put my body/the babies/our marriage at risk.. but I also feel like if Im prepared to do it, and Im spending the money for it..., then i should make the call. I agree the Dr knows best. I guess Id have to hear what the statistics are in terms of success rates and likelihood of multiples.
Hearing your experiences was so helpful!

I don't think so. If anything, I think it increases your chance of pregnancy. If one doesn't implant, you still have a chance with the other one.
I felt the same way as you, I was prepared for twins. I felt that if one didn't implant than maybe the second one would. Now that I have a DS, I'm no longer prepared for a set of twins, so we only transfer one
Because you're dealing strictly with male factor (as far as you know right now), and your age, your RE will most likely want to transfer 1. In the end though, it should be your call (within reason). If you really want to transfer 2, be adamant about it. Good luck!!!

same here.. i begged to put 3 back though! and my dr said no way.
good thing- because both took and one split!! we were NOT prepared for that news! :)
i lost one of the splits around 7-8 weeks- but now have fraternal twins..!
