Does Your Toddler Hold Your Hand In Stores?

Holy cow, remind me to never go into Kohls again without a stroller. Stupid me assumed they would have the stroller carts available but they were all being used. Anyway, Emma does NOT like to hold my hand AT ALL anymore. She was running in the racks, laughing and smiling like a little devil. I would try to hold her hand and she would FLIP OUT. Please tell me mine is not the only one allergic to hand holding.

My DD is 18 mos. old and YEAH RIGHT! Chat Icon She hates to be in the stroller too--so she's constantly trying to escape from there as well!

Re: Does Your Toddler Hold Your Hand In Stores?

Sabrina used to pull away but recently she has gotten better with holding my hand. When she wants out of the stroller I tell her we need to hold hands. So when she gets out, she reaches for my hand and says "hold hand, mommy" Chat Icon

We DID let her out in the Carter's outlet today and she was squealing and running until she saw the Lego table and then she played happily until we left.

or else what though? I kept saying "Emma, do you want to go home?" She would say NO! So I would say then hold mommy's hand. Of course she didn't though!

I could have written the same post last week- up to and including "Kohls" (thats where we were !!!)...He would take off sqealing- hiding in the racks , thank the lord, my DH was there, because with my big ole' belly, I would have been in big trouble ! My DS is totally boycotting the stroller now ( ever since the 1st time we let him walk, now thats all he wants to do) ...Unfortunately, no advice, only sympathy, but if I find a solution I'll let you know Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Does Your Toddler Hold Your Hand In Stores?

My 2 1/2 year old will hold my hand in a park or walking more than my older ones did at his age but when it comes to shopping, he wants to bolt 99% of the time. Which is why 99% of the time, he's in a stroller or cart. If I am not running errands and just taking him to the play area in the mall while my older kids are at school, I do let him walk and work on listening. He's not there yet.

I am a hard a$$. If they give me nonsense, our day's activities will reflect it.

When the boy's mom heard I went without a stroller, she was shocked. She said she never takes him to the mall, let alone without a stroller.

I did not plan it, we were coming home from our library class, it was a rainy day, they were full of energy...so I figured let's do the mall playground. I hate leaving the stroller out in the middle of nowhere, so I left it in the car.

I will not let go of their hand. They are trained now, but in the beginning, I refuse to let go. We could be heading out to the park and if one doesn't hold my hand, I will pick them up and go home.

So now, all it takes is that mean whisper "you better stop or we are going home"

if they do that whole dragging thing...I still won't let go of hand, I will just stand there and tell them to stop.

The kid's mother is shocked, he never holds her hand.

Re: Does Your Toddler Hold Your Hand In Stores?

Nope. My son refuses to hold my hand in stores, so that is why I have to put him in a cart or stroller. Luckily he's pretty good about staying in his stroller and likes shopping carts as long as I bring books and snacks Chat Icon so shopping is a pretty easy process for us.

He's great holding hands in the parking lot, street, etc but the minute he enters the store he thinks its the playground Chat Icon

In the mall, it depends. I often let him walk around because it's pretty wide open and he never runs too far from me... but I still bring the stroller since the minute we go into a store, back in he goes Chat Icon

OMG DD would never hold our hand in a store. It's either in the cart or DH is chasing her. I rarely venture out with her alone unless I have to. It's just too much effort.

I give you a lot of credit for even trying it without a stroller! I never went into a store unless they were in a stroller or cart - my DS up until he was over 3 and my DD is 2-1/2 and its stroller/cart or I don't go in! Chat Icon

Yes...she knows she has to hold my hand or back in the car we go. She does try to pull away but I stop, stand there and tell her very sternly that she needs to hold mommys hand in order to be safe. I do let her go though in toys r us so she can see the toys. She also tries to break away from me if she sees one of those mechanical rides or something but I never let her go.

She HATES the shopping cart and/or stroller. When I have to put her in a shopping cart, I have to bring along one of those gerber fruit snack thingies, we call them her "Megan candy" and she sits right away! Chat Icon

Re: Does Your Toddler Hold Your Hand In Stores?

I had the exact same experience today as I ran into the supermarket just to grab pull-ups & milk. DD insisted on walking, I figured we'd be super fast and before you know it, she's running around the aisles, as I've got the diaper bag over my shoulder, groceries in one hand, trying to drag her around in the store with the other, & I'm 6 months pregnant. It was quite a scene! Never ever again will I take my 2-year-old into a store without a stroller or cart!
