Dog not eating as much?
My parents have a German Shepherd/Chow mix - he'll be 13 years old in December. Over the past few months he's lost a LOT of weight. He started out at 84 lbs. (which was overweight for his frame). When he was boarded at the vet in May, he was down to 74 lbs. because he had been eating significantly less (same food he has always eaten and loved). Today, a month and a half later, he is down to 68 lbs. which is normal, just not for him. He is losing all this weight because he's not eating, that's all.
The vet just has my mom watching him, and feeding him foods like pasta and burgers which he loves... if he continues to lose weight they will do an x-ray.
Any have any experience with this?

Re: Dog not eating as much?
What's his poop like?
My dog had stomach issues for such a long time and had contstant diarreah. Turns out he has some gastro issues that meds were able to correct. But I'm not sure if, at 13 years old, gastro issues would just appear.
Hopefully the food the vet is reccommending your mom feed him will put some weight on.
Good luck!

It's totally normal, thank goodness... we think that he just doesn't like the food anymore because he will eat treats like there is no tomorrow He is a big dog, and I know they don't live as long but I am hoping he has some time left

Re: Dog not eating as much?
Is it possible he just isn't as active anymore so he isn't eating as much?
I hope he's ok.

Re: Dog not eating as much?
Did they do bloods to check the dog's Thyroid or for other disorders? Is the dog eliminating on a normal schedule (no increase or decrease in frequency)?

The vet was waiting to see how he did on more appealing food before ordering the bloodwork and x-rays. He is still "going" as much as he did before.
