Donating Clothing and other items?

Who/Where do you guys donate your clothing to?

Most of the stuff I have is in new (with tags) or like new condition and could be pretty useful to some people. I hate to put it in a drop-off box because I have no clue what they do with that stuff. Chat Icon

I recently got a bag and notecard for a cancer charity, so I was going to put out a bunch of things for them, but what exactly do they do with the clothes??? Do they sell them and use the proceeds to go towards the charity?

I was going to put out a bunch of electronics for a Vets charity, but again, what do they do with the stuff? Does it go to the vets or is it sold for the $?

I'm going to donate all the stuff regardless, but I was just curious how these things work. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Donating Clothing and other items?

I donate to my local Outreach program at the church. They give items to people less fortunate who go to the church for help. It is VERY regulated.

Im not sure exactly how things work once the items have been donated. But I always donate my clothes, shoes and handbags to St Marys church in Brooklyn. They come to you to pick everything up so it is very convenient.

Re: Donating Clothing and other items?

we usually donate to the salvation army- they donate a large percentage to the actual people that need it and not much overhead- if you want you can check out the other charities that you mentioned though the Better Business Bureau- http://www.newyork.bbb.org/charity/

If I'm not passing it on the moms on this site, I call Big Brothers/Big Sisters to pick it up or drop it in their bin at the corner of Pulaski & Broadway (at the gas station across from Greenlawn park).

St. Vincent de Paul is also good. They sell it & the proceeds go to help those in need. I've seen the volunteers in action, buying up all of the turkeys, stuffing, etc in Waldbaums to feed familes in need. Good stuff. If it weren't for the religious aspect, I'd totally help.

Re: Donating Clothing and other items?

I prefer to donate to the church, after that the Salvation Army.

Sometimes if I have a small amount I do those drop off bags in the mail you get...Lupus foundation, MS , Big brothers/sisters....They basically sell the stuff to get funds for the charity.

Re: Donating Clothing and other items?

Usually the Salvation Army, but when I lived in NY, would bring it to the St. Vincent DePaul Society on NY Ave in Huntington Station.

We usually have the Vets or Big Brothers/Big Sisters come pick up.

But I think I recently got a card/bag in the mailbox from another chairty that I scheduled a pick up from.

I never put stuff in the bins (I hate seeing them overflowing!) - just pick ups. And I have no idea what any of them actually do with it all.

Re: Donating Clothing and other items?

I recently dropped off 8 bags of clothes (including new stuff w/tags) to Good Will. They also take small electronics at most locations. I've also donated to Salvation Army in the past.

Re: Donating Clothing and other items?

I give everything to my cleaning lady. What she can't use she passes on to friends or her church. At least this way I know everything is going to someone who needs and appreciates it. Chat Icon

The Dress for Success is a great idea! My DH has quite a few dress shirts that I need to donate.

Re: Donating Clothing and other items?

I donate adult clothing to Good Will. It's usually not in a great condition so I don;t care what happens to it.

Gently used children's clothes I put on Craig's List in Free section. That was I KNOW it's going to someone who needs it. I recently posted a bag full of baby girl clothes age 3 to 12 months and some toys and got about 30 replies. I gave it to a woman who was due with a girl in a month. She was very happy and it made me feel good that I helped someone while saving resources.

I donate to the Helping Hand Rescue Mission in Huntington Station. I like that they don't sell your stuff, they have a community closet, food pantry, etc. for the community.
