Donating hair...give me all the info and answer some specific questions....PLEASE!!!!!!!
I have had very long hair for most of my life and now I am 42 and I am starting to feel bad that I never once donated my hair like so many of my friends have. I kept it long when they donated it and then after DS was born, I did the mommy chop thing gradually, not at once.
I have been looking at the different charities that accept donations. My hair is color treated with permanent color but not bleach. I have some grays. I had bleach hi-lights 3 years ago but I believe those have all been cut out by now. I am willing to start the growth process again to make sure that none of what I am donating was bleached. I would want to grow my hair a lot longer than it is now anyway.
Pantene Beautiful Lengths will not accept color treated hair but will accept hair that is up to 5 percent gray. I would say that my hair is much less than 5 percent gray but how do I really tell? When my color needs to be done, the grays pop up (they literally have more height than the rest of my hair because the texture is different). I would say that less than 1 in 20 hairs on my head are gray but there really is no way to tell what percent gray I am. I can't donate to this charity anyway, because of the permanent color. I am using their 5 percent as a guideline anyway b/c other sites are not specific.
Locks of Love will take color treated hair but the website just says that gray hair is only of use for them to sell to offset costs of things like the prosthesis for the wigs. I would prefer they use my hair because if they are going to sell it, I may as well donate money & not grow my hair. My hair is not very easy to care for and I would have to take extra care if I was donating it. I am worried that my ends get very dry. I have a ton of hair but each individual strand is very fine. I don't think that is the optimal texture.
Are there local organizations that do this? Has anyone heard of Zichron Manachem? It is an Israeli organization with a NY office. Their site says that they do not accept hair that is "completely white or grey" but that they sell some of the hair to fund their various projects (all of which do seem to be worthy but again, if I grow my hair I do hope they use it).
Anyone know more about donating when you have a little bit of gray? I may only get to do this once because I might be too gray later on.
One of my best friends grows her hair and donates it regularly but her hair has never been colored and she does not have any gray. I have watched her do this many times!! She would be so excited if I told her I want to do this now.
I am getting a haircut very soon and I have to decide whether to just trim it to get ready to donate or whether to get rid of some length now (if I can't donate anyway). What if a ton more grays come in before I am ready to donate? Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I guess.
Thoughts?
ETA: Now I find Wigs for Kids, which accepts gray but not color treated. I know it must sound awful but I do not want to stop coloring my hair. The color actually gives it the texture for me do more with it, plus I hate seeing even one gray. I could grow my hair as long as they want & condition it as much as possible but I want to color it!
I'm going to bed but I hope to figure this out so I have a plan.

I just chopped off all my hair (about 14") and I, like you, would have loved to donate it but it was just too damaged from coloring it and its super fine. You’re so right that not everyone can actually do it even if they want to.
It seems like you did a ton of research on it already. I don't really have any info, I just wanted to give you something to think about... Just say you had perfect hair, who's to say they wouldn't sell it anyway for the money because they need the funds more than hair at the moment you donate it?
I agree with what you said, nothing ventured, nothing gained. If it would give you a good feeling to grow it and donate it rather than just giving money then do it, you have no idea what they’ll do with the hair once you give it to them anyway.
I guess I didn’t have much advice but I wanted to reply because no one else did & I was just THINKING about this myself…

Thanks. Now I found this place called wigfund, which is basically a wig store that allows people with medical conditions to create profiles to receive donations of hair or money toward their wigs. There is still no guarantee that they can use it but it does appear that if I pick to donate to a specific person and they can't use my hair, that specific person gets credit for my hair and the credit goes toward their wig.
Can we see your new do?

Locks of Love will take color treated hair-just not bleached.
Locks of love though, does not give to ALL children, just those that are terminal.
Wigs for kids gives wigs to everyone.

I did locks of love and had color treated hair. It was tough to do but it felt amazing since it was for a good cause. So nice of you

I did locks for love once when I cut 14 inches off at the end of law school.
I was sorely disappointed in the entire process. I honestly didn't feel like I did any good at all donating it. I guess I'm glad I did but I don't really feel bad now that I don't have it long enough to donate anymore (and I don't grow it long enough before cuts to do it again).
I think it's really sweet you want to help out, but I wouldn't feel bad if they "reject" you because your hair is color treated. That's just my personal opinion on it. Maybe if I had gone to a different salon to do it or had some sort of contact besides a postcard with the wrong name on it sent to me as a "thank you" I would've felt better about it. I just don't even know if it ever got where it was supposed to or even helped anyone.

I have heard that I would not even know if they didn't use my hair. If I decide to do this, then next week's cut would be a healthy trim but if I do not do this then I may take 3-4 inches off now. I was wondering if I would feel disappointed with the process or feel like I could have just made a donation of some money instead.

I looked into it, but was told that the hair needed to have no split ends and I could only get to 10 inches. They said that my hair was healthy, not died, not grey, not treated and did not have split ends, but was not acceptable because it would only be 9 3/4 inches. I ended up not donating it and was upset about it.

Was this at a salon? I thought that after a person sends their hair away, they really do not find out what happens. I know I could grow my hair to my waist and I have done so before. I just did not cut it all off at once. There is no way I would grow it and not have ANY split ends, though. No way.

I have cut people's hair for Locks of Love and I have NEVER heard of No Split ends. That is almost impossible. Also they will take it if it is less than 10 inches, it will be sold and the money will be used. It needs to be 10 inches in order to be used in a wig.

I just cut mine last week and donated it to Locks of Love. My hair is very very fine too, but it does not matter--they still take it--I donated 10 inches. I am trying t grow it out again to donate with my nieces next time.

It was at a salon in Washington, DC.

I've donated three times now to LoL. It is a great feeling to know I did good. I have no idea if they actually used my hair to make a wig or sold it. They sent me a post card the first two times (I just mailed my third donation two weeks ago).

Wigs for Kids link to donating hair
Locks of Love link to donating hair
Pantene Beautiful Lengths link to donating hair
Pantene has come to St. Baldricks the last couple years-it's not a scam it's legit.
Being involved in St. Baldricks- I would donate to Wigs for Kids if possible because they give to all kids.
Locks of love gives to terminal only-but they take color treated hair.
Either way, what you're doing is great and the child receiving it is so grateful for what you're doing

Re: Donating hair...give me all the info and answer some specific questions....PLEASE!!!!!!!
Well, it is almost time!!!!! My goal was to grow my hair until Thanksgiving weekend but I have an appointment for a haircut this week and I am going to decide when I get there. I may just do a trim now but I really need at least that right now. My hairdresser wanted to do it 2 months ago and I am fine with it if she feels I have the length I need. Now I have family photos and a vacation coming up and I would like to go with my new do. Plus I am getting impatient caring for all of this hair!!!!!
My choices are offocially narrowed down to:
wigfund & Zichron Menachim (Jewish organization that gives hair to children).
Never had short hair. Not going super short anyway but freaking out!!!
