I might be going to Peru this August. Trying to squeeze it in with Ecuador with my sister. Oh, you must! I think it would be really easy to hop over to Cusco for a few days. I so regret not going to Ecuador when we were in Peru last year.
Our current down the road plans (our places of interest change all the time!) include Patagonia (Chile/Argentina), Japan, and Vietnam.

I remember your pictures from the travel board! I would probably be going to Peru and doing the hike/camp to Machu Picchu alone though.
OMG Chile! I saw Earth River travel company at a trade show. I really want to do one of their trips.

Within 2 years I really hope to take a road trip from NY to CA. And take a lot of time doing it.
I always wanted to do that !!! For now we're planning a road trip of just California for next year. Starting in the north and ending in the south....stopping to enjoy as many places as we can along the way

I agree, I've always wanted to do this with DH. When I was a teenager, we once drove from Idaho to West Virginia, helping some of my family move, it was a great experience.

Re: Down the Road Vacation Plans
My parents always wanted to tour the US too... So when they retired, they did it. In this:
They've been to almost every state and have had varying experiences but they don't regret it at all!
My Dad is a real patriot and scoffs at me when I talk about only wanting to travel outside the US right now. I think it's a wonderful idea to travel the US but I want to do the long distance travel while we're younger, you know?
In 3 years, I will be 40 so I'd want to do something really special like finally go to Japan during cherry blossom season. Always wanted to do that, but that's a long-@ss flight.
In the meantime, a two week trip touring Europe would be just fine with me.

Wow greenfreak -- that's so cool! kudos to your parents for doing that -- and seeing the country. sometimes we forget just how vast the U.S. is and how different the topography from north, south, east, west....i wouldn't mind doing this for retirement one day too.
i'm trying to picture my parents doing this -- i think they'd kill each other. my dad doesn't do well any longer than 3 or 4 hrs in a car. their dream retirement is puerto rico -- where they raise chickens and ducks.

Re: Down the Road Vacation Plans
So far really just finally going on our honeymoon cruise... HOPEFULLY this summer but it might have to wait until next
Far off future is a Disney Park, hopefully Toyko. That takes mucho though.
London for the 2012 Olympics as well... hopefully!!!! For me... kids or not I am going!!!
Our issue is going to WDW and Disneyland yearly (one or the other or both or more than once....) and fitting in/paying for other trips as well.

Seriously -- I don't know how anyone planned vacays before the internet!
I don't know how I did anything before the internet.
I dont have any vacations on deck right now. One of my girlfriends suggested doing something beachy in the fall which sounds fun.

When I start to think about that, it's really interesting to me. Vacationing used to be a much bigger gamble, wasn't it? I know our family vacations were up and down, some of it looked great on a pamphlet but was just terrible when we got there.
I mean, it's good that you can avoid the bad stuff but I tend to over-plan things and lose that spontaneous excitement you get when you discover things yourself, you know?
So for our honeymoon, I planned 3 out of 6 days worth of meals, sightseeing, tours and such. The other days we just winged it. And that time was pretty great too!
