Dr. Ferber's book - ANyone read it and follow it? What was your experience?

Our ped suggested this book. All I have heard is that it advocates letting DC CIO. My DS hardly sleeps and it seems to be getting worse so I am willing to try anything at this point.

Has anyone tried it? Does it help?

looooooved that book......worked for us....on the 3rd nite, no crying, and has been and HEALTHY, HAPPY sleeper since 7 months....sleeps about 11-12 hours a nite, with a nap during the day...dr ferber is NOT cold hearted, nor is his method, he goes into GREAT detail about sleep association and how important a nite time ritual is....

in short- sleep association= how you get the child to sleep...rocking/nursing/bottle/nuk....all these= not good....bc if the child wakes in the nite, as ALL CHILDREN DO, they need what got themt o sleep in the first place- ultminately, YOU...its important they learn to fall asleep on their own without any of these....etc etc

I haven't tried it yet (baby too young) but our friend swears by it.
And its not just CIO. You can check on the baby, but don't pick them up and you increase the time between checking on them each time.

Here is a summary from wikipedia:

And you Take steps to prepare the baby to sleep. This includes night-time rituals and day-time activities.

At bedtime, leave the child in bed and leave the room.

Return at progressively increasing intervals to comfort the baby (without picking him up). For example, on the first night, some scenarios call for returning first after three minutes, then after five minutes, and thereafter each ten minutes, until the baby is asleep.

Each subsequent night, return at intervals longer than the night before. For example, the second night may call for returning first after five minutes, then after ten minutes, and thereafter each twelve minutes, until the baby is asleep.
