DR/Hospital Recommendation
Right now my dr is Suffolk OBGYN and I really don't like the idea that my delivery dr could be any one of the 11 drs in the practice. I'd also be delivering at St. Charles which I've heard mixed reviews about. I was thinking of switching to a Dr that will deliver at Stony Brook.
Can anyone give any recommendations about drs or either hospital, including your experiences with Suffolk OBGYN?
Thanks so much! Just a nervous first time mom :)

Re: DR/Hospital Recommendation
I use Suffolk OBGYN, and had a very uneventful 1st pregnancy and liked almost all the Drs there. This time I'm still using them and liking them! I'm scheduling a c-section this time so I'll have some control over who does it. I feel like even in a smaller practice, if your Doc is on vaca or something when you deliver, you could wind up with a Dr you don't know.
I loved St Charles and my only complaint was that the NICU nurses weren't as supportive of BFing as I thought they'd be, (DD was in the NICU bc of low blood sugar) but there was a lactation consultant that I met with and she was very helpful (I went on to BF DD until she was 2, so really didn't matter in the long run.) Also, I like that they don't let the baby in the room during public visiting hours (7-8), bc I didn't want a bunch of people holding my new born, and their rules made them seem like the bad guys I stead of me!
I also have 2 cousins that used Suffolk OBGYN for their pregnancies. 1 has 3 kids and no complaints. The other had a bad pregnancy, GD, high BP all along, and had pre-eclampsia that she felt they missed early on. So it really depends on your situation.
But I'm happy! :)

Re: DR/Hospital Recommendation
Most groups are like that if you have an emergency the ion call doc will deliver you. I go to a group of 5 docs and love them all honestly would have been happy with anyone who delivered me but I was an emergency csection and their on call doc delivered me.

Re: DR/Hospital Recommendation
I used to go to Suffolk obgyn. I always thought they were fine until I switched... My cousin who is a nurse on mother baby in st Charles recommended dr Erhart in port Jeff. What an insane difference! They are soooo much more personal! There are only 2 doctors, and you get to know both during your pregnancy. I have convinced my sister and two friends so far to try them out, and they are all so happy they did. As for st Charles, I had zero problems with them. I'm looking forward to delivering #2 there.

DR/Hospital Recommendation
Thank you all for your help!! Does anyone have an opinion on Stony Brook hospital at all? I don't mind a smaller group practice, but Suffolk OBGYN is so big I know I'll never get personalized attention from any of them. They recommended I go to someone new every visit to get familiar with all of them. It'll be just like being a new patient each time. I'm not sure if I like that. I've been going there for 16 years so I'm comfortable with a specific doctor so I'm really letting the hospital be a factor for the decision. If I stick with St. Charles I might as well stay with Suffolk, but if I should switch the hospital as well then obviously I need to switch Drs.

Re: DR/Hospital Recommendation
My OB is affiliated with St. Charles. I delivered DD #1 here and will again with DC#2. I have a 2-OB practice, so one checked me in and overnight, they switched and I had the other OB deliver DD.
I loved the delivery units at St. Charles. Very cozy and private. I had a nurse with me for my entire stay and was a great coach and instructor since it was all new to us.
The maternity ward has changed since I delivered DD in 2011. Now, the baby can stay in the room with the mother 24/7. The visiting hours are still limited, which I liked, so I could have privacy with my DH and our new baby without constant company.
The one negative everyone harps on is the lack of private rooms. I was in the hospital for 2 nights and got a roommate the last day as I was checking out. I have no complaints. Every person I have known to stay there has always been alone until their last day.

DR/Hospital Recommendation
The rooms at Stony brook are all private and beautiful and large. the food is pretty good too. I wouldn't get an epidural there again, it took the girl a half hour to do and my husband couldn't stay with me, I almost passed out. In VA where I delivered ds1- it took about 10 mins and dh held my hand. I will not be getting an epi this time, bc of that.

Re: DR/Hospital Recommendation
My dr and hospital are in Nassau. But I just wanted to say make sure you go with what you want and switch early. What you want is out there. I ended up switching to a group of only 2 dr's. You are always gonna get one of them. Since you always see the 2 of them you really get to know them and they know you. good luck!!

DR/Hospital Recommendation
Thank you so much, I will definitely keep these tips in mind. I'm always so indecisive anyway so making this decision is hard when there are good things about both hospitals. I appreciate the help!

I delivered in 2011 too. I didn't know that they changed, we visited my cousin who have birth last Dec and the baby was in the nursery from 7-8 while we visited...did that change too, or do they still keep the baby for the hour when anyone can visit? I'm delivering there in march, and hope to have the baby with me as much as possible.

Re: DR/Hospital Recommendation
I LOVED Stony Brook Hospital. I had a wonderful experience there - the nurses were amazing to us and I can't really think of a single complaint. The rooms (both in L&D and recovery) are private and recently renovated which is a plus.

I don't know when it changed, but our close friends had babies in May and October and when we went to visit, the visiting hours changed to 7:30-8:30 and the babies were in the mother's room the entire time (or you can choose to send to the nursery).

Re: DR/Hospital Recommendation
I delivered my second DS at Stony Brook and loved it. The private rooms are great and I loved being alone. The nurses where nice and I had a lot of BF support though it was my second so I knew what I was doing. Even the food was pretty good. They have long Visting hours and encourage you to keep baby in room with you at all times except when they take them for tests. Pretty sure you can ask them to take baby back to nursery at night if you need them to.
I delivered my first at a different hospital and did not have a great experience. I shared a room and I hated it. It made my stay so much stressful then it needed to be. Plus the lactation consultant was on maternity leave and they had no one else to help me. The nurses where not great. I didn't realize how important a private room was for me until my stay at stony brook.
I switched at 20 weeks with my second to deliver at Stony Brook. I loved my original practice but needed to switch because of where I would deliver. The new practice I go to is Stony Brook OBGYN. Dr. Porte delivered my first and I'm going to them again for this pregnancy. I'm very happy with all the doctors. They are associated with Three Village OBGYN. So you may have one of those doctors deliver you. I have quite of few friends that go to that practice abd love them as well.

I have to say I didn't love a lot of the nursing staff. Most were not helpful when it came to bfing and one was extremely pushy about giving formula bc she thought DD was starving at 6 hours old! We were also rushed out the door despite the fact that DD was supposed to see the orthopedist before we left. They said he couldn't make it and discharged us and when we saw him in his office the next day he said he came and they told him we had just left. Overall, I had a good experience but there were definitely things I wasn't happy with.

I am using the Stony Brook midwives and love my experience so far. I will be delivering in Stony Brook which was one of my main reasons for choosing them. My sister in law used them for all three kids and loves them.
