Drinking from a straw?
DD is 16 months old today and just doesn't seem to be able to figure this one out. She is anti-sippy cup to begin with. I try them all, but she just won't drink that much from them. I just bought the nuby straw cups yesterday and plan on giving them a try. She could get anything from the munchkin ones - and I tried them out -and man, you've gotta suck pretty hard!

Re: Drinking from a straw?
DS is 13.5 months and has the same issue. Doesn't get any sippy cup or sippy with straw.
Actually had an EI specialist come over and work with him b/c he has a texture issue and won't even try table food.
She said they don't like sippy cups and would rather kids use the ones with the straw. B/c he doesn't get it she gave me a tip. Stick a straw in the water and then put your finger over the top so you get water in the straw. Then put it in DC's mouth and let a little out so they sort of start figuring they have to suck to get it out. Still working on this with DS, but that's how I give him water. Not sure when he'll give up the bottle FM me if you have any questions

Re: Drinking from a straw?
I practiced with DD with a juice box w ice tea in it... i would squeeze it a little until she figured it out and then she was able to get it in the straw sippys.

Re: Drinking from a straw?
my SIL showed me a way to teach Em and she has been able to do it since she was about 9 or so months old.
get a REGULAR straw (not a sippy straw) - one that you would use.
using water (or any beverage), get some of it to go into the straw (by dipping into the beverage, going to use water from now on).
using your finger tip, stop up the straw so that some of the water stays in the straw.
put it into DC's mouth and keep your finger on the other end. if DC doesn't 'suck' right away ...let a tiny bit of the water out of the straw by removing your finger tip and putting it back...(so DC can see that there is something IN the straw).
repeat until DC starts 'sucking' it out of the straw...
it took about 5-6 times of me doing this and Em got it down cold! if we're out in the spur of the moment doing something and she's thirsty - this has saved us quite a bit. we can just run into a store and grab a container of milk that she can drink from a straw with!
hth!
