Re: Drinking from a straw
DS just learned at 10 months.. I kind of just let him play with it for awhile. I showed him how mommy drinks from it.. made sure he knew there was water in there to drink.
The most common way is to take the straw..place your finger on the tip of the straw to keep some water in.. and put it to DC's mouth and he will instinctively suck on it to get the water out. (of course you hae to release your finger for him to get the water). I did that too. after a week...he's a champ now. good luck

Re: Drinking from a straw
Take a regular straw, put some liquid in it, and drop it into DS's mouth. That will show him there's something in it. Then let him try sucking the regular straw. Then move onto the sippy.
Someone else might have a better idea, but that's mine.

Re: Drinking from a straw
This is how I taught Landon at 12 months. You know how to suction liquid into the straw by putting your finger on one end? Do that, and put the other end in his mouth. Slowly release some liquid. DS started sucking right away. Next time I gave him a straw cup he knew how to use it. Am I explaining it clearly?

Re: Drinking from a straw
Get a real straw. Dip one end in the juice/water/whatever you want to give him, hold your finger over the other end of the straw, then drop the liquid in your DS's mouth so he knows what the straw has for him. Then let him try to use the straw. When he "gets" how to use the straw, try the straw sippy.
Because of the valve, it's much harder for kids to get the liquid in a straw sippy cup, so it helps to have them practice with a real straw at first, which has no valve.
Good luck!!

Yes!! Sorry Em this is what I did w/ Bel at 6 months. She realized after a few times that something was in the straw. Then he will start to suck on his own. This post just reminded me
