Drinking...what are your thoughts?
Right, I am not a big fan of drinking. To me, booze doens't taste all that nice, it is expensive, it makes me feel sick, and in general, I just think its bad for society in general (at least the society I live in)
So the question I put to you is...Alcohol, booze, plonk...whatever you want to call it. How do you feel about it? Do you like drinking? Does it really make you feel good??? How do you feel about drunk people?
Elaborate.

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
I'm like you. Often, I don't see the point in people going out and spending tons of money on something that you will only pee out the next day and curse because it made you sick.
That said, a good margarita is like an ice cream sundae. I won't say no!

I suppose I should have said that I do enjoy some champagne. A lot of champagne. But other booze...no.

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
Well, I feel that certain things in moderation are good for you. My husband and I do drink beer & alcohol socially. We rarely keep it at home. I'd say that I have acquired a tatse for the type of beer I drink as well as the alcoholic drinks I enjoy. I'm not a fan of whine & champagne...maybe I just haven't found the right one.

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
I like to drink. I actually like the taste of alcohol (well some if it). I have a really high tolerance, so I don't get smashed, but I get a nice buzz. I equate it to my DHs need for coffee to start up his day...a nice glass of hooch winds mine down

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
I've never been a beer drinker. It's just nasty to me. I'm more of a wine and mixed drink or margarita drinker if anything. I don't sit home with my dh and drink though. If we have people over our house, we'll make a few drinks or have wine with our friends. But that's about it.

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
I enjoy drinking.
I acquired a taste for wine at a very young age. My parents served wine at supper to all of my siblings once we were 9 or 10. Just cordial cups - but my dad taught me to appreciate the depth and texture of different wines. I still like to have a small glass of wine with my supper when i can.
I used to drink to excess in my college years and beyond. I would drink, get sick - and do it all again. I am now a mother so those days are long behind me. But I still enjoy a cocktail to wind down. But - for me - it isn't the feeling of getting drunk, it is the imprints of memory and bits of recall that make me enjoy certain beverages.
A good glass of red wine makes me feel homey and relaxed. A carafe of sangria sitting on the deck reminds me of the easy days of summer. An ice cold beer makes me feel carefree and young.
I don't even have to DRINK them to get these feelings... just the idea of them and the sight. Holding a margarita in my hand makes me feel festive and having a single malt at my wrist gives me some small nugget of empowerment.
i don't drink everyday - or even every month. And when I do drink it is rarely to excess - although I have been known to go there on occassion.
I think alcohol - like most things that are geared for adults - is something you should choose and use with care. But I do choose it and I do enjoy it!

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
I used to be a real big drinker and enjoyed coming home from a long day and having a glass of wine or something to just unwind.
Then we moved to FL and lived with friends for 9 months. They drank uncontrollably. Stubbed your toe, have a shot of whiskey. Bad hair day, have a few beers. Their motto was drink, it'll kill what ails you. After living with them for 9 months and just watching the amount of alcohol they put in their system it just completely turned me off from drinking.
So now I'll have a glass of wine once in a while. At a special occassion I'll have a drink (usually just 1 or 2) and if we have guests over or a party at our house I may have a drink.
On our cruise I had maybe 1 or 2 drinks.

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
For me it's a social thing more than anything else.
I hate the taste of beer. Wine is ok. There are types of alcohol that taste better to me but it's more based on the sugar content (coconut martinis, anything with kahlua).
It amplifies whatever mood I was in before I was drinking. If I was happy, it makes me happier. If I was sad, it makes me sadder. Either way I don't like the feeling of being drunk. Also at this stage, it's not worth the WWers points.
As for how I feel about drunks, it depends on the drunk. I think there is a time & place for drinking. If people are out having a good time, as long as it's not interfering with everyone else's good time, good for them. If they're doing it to escape on a regular basis, then it's not social drinking - it's alcoholism.

I like beer, but I hate wine. WE have beer in the house, but it takes me hours to drink one glass. Dh will have one with dinner maybe one night a week.
we are both way past the age where we drink to get drunk. plus i have an incredibly low tolerance so it only takes one and a half to get me buzzed.

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
i agree with most of the others... i never liked to drink to get drunk. i just don't like the idea that i could loose control of myself, or forget things i did LOL (probably because my grandpa and a couple of my uncles had drinking problems in the past, and i saw first hand what it can do...) BUT, a little buzz is nice, and i like having a glass of wine or a margarita or martini to wind down and relax...

I don't love beer. But I will drink it. I like Mix drinks. And some Wine. I don't drink all the time. Sometimes when we go to dinner I will have 1 mixed drink. Once in a while I drink to get drunk. If we are out at a club or a party. My DH is always Designated driver.

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
I drink a lot less than I used to. DH and I take turns when we go out, usually. It's been a long time since I've been really drunk and I don't miss it. I'm kind of nervous to have more than a couple drinks because I didn't drink for a very long time.
I don't think it's attractive to see adults completed wasted and acting like jackasses. It's one thing for a young person- it's almsost a rite of passage- but it's tacky for adults (I don't mean merely drunk, I mean loud, obnoxious, pissing oneself drunk).

I'm not a big drinker. I like an occasional glass of wine, and of course I went through some wild days in College and when I spent 2 summers in France , but overall, just not a big fan.
I've noticed too, that it may just be a cultural thing because most Jewish people I know aren't big drinkers either. Either a cultural thing, or it's becoming obvious that jews just can't handle their alcohol
And yes, that's a generalization. Flame away ladies!

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
It is very rare that I drink. I do not like the taste enough to find it a thirst quencher. It basically has to taste like juice before I would consider drinking. I also do not like the feeling of the loss of control. I get drunk too quickly and I know for a fact that my judgement and motor control is impaired.
Im also not a fan of needing to alter a normal state as a stress reliever through alcohol and drugs. There are too many things that can go wrong and I am not that much of a gambler.

No flames. I grew up in a Jewish household too. My parents were not drinkers and neither were my grandparents. None of the four of us kids had any alcohol problems. We drank in college and after college, it just was not important anymore. We never make it through one glass of wine on Passover so we only buy enough for the ten plagues part of the seder.

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
I don't really drink. I don't like the taste of it, I have always gotten sick and/or a headache from it, I don't like not being able to drive, etc. As for drunk people, it depends on the people. Years ago my ex boyfriend was an alcoholic and was always drunk. I hated him drunk which was all the time. It didn't last long. As long as people aren't being stupid I don't really care. It's their choice to drink. Drunk drivers should have their licenses taken away the FIRST time and never get it back.

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
Before pregnancy, its what I did. I loved drinking, I loved staggering home, I really loved drunken sex. Going out after work was fun, I had a group.
Vacations were a blast, try to find a picture of me not with a drink in my hand.
Pregnancy came...brought its morning sickness. Months and months of vomiting. At one point, laying on the toliet seat at work crying.
Then baby came. Along followed breastfeeding. I haven't been buzzed for about 20 months now.
In this time, I have realized, I will never be that one friend who is cool with driving while you drink.
I think dry weddings are underrated.
Sometimes when the little guy is asleep, I will have a beer. DH buys a different six pack once a month. Chocolate Stouts, Blue Moons...the six pack lasts us both the month.
I think my drinking days are done.

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
I find that I drink more NOW than when I was younger.
I think its because I dont drink to get drunk. I drink to relax...and I guess I need the relaxation more now than ever before!
I like liquor..tequila being my fave. I enjoy margaritas on special occasions and I enjoy the fact that it doesnt make me sick.
Anything with kahlua tastes awesome to me.
I used to HATE beer. Now I have grown to LOVE Michelob ultra..due to ww..this is the beer with the least points I think. The taste is smooth and it relaxes me and doesnt take a lot to just make me happy..not totally drunk..just buzzed.
I am not a huge drinker and never have been and I am so grateful for that due to the fact that alcohol ruined so many peoples lives in my family.

No Flames here...but you should meet some of the Jewish people here in the UK...they drink a lot more than Jews in the states do. I completely agree with you about growing up in a Jewish household. We never had alcohol in the house and my parents certainly did not (and do not now) drink.
My 93 year old grandmother, well she still enjoys a cold beer with dinner every once in a while!
eta...My British hunk of a husband loves to drink beer...he just loves beer...and he has the belly to match.

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
I enjoy a drink or two when I'm out. If I'm not driving, I enjoy having a few. I've been truly drunk three times in my life, so obviously I don't drink to get drunk. I like that little "buzz" after a few drinks or beers. At home or with dinner, I prefer wine. I think a good red compliments a meal nicely and nothing makes me relax more than a glass or two of wine before bed.
I don't drink and drive - nor would I ever. If there is a designated driver, I will drink...If the designated driver drinks, I stop. I am too much of a control freak to allow drinking and driving to occur.

Re: Drinking...what are your thoughts?
DH and I are big wine drinkers. A glass or two with dinner just about everynight is the norm with is.
I also learned to love wine at a young age. My grandfather loved his vino and would give us little sips.
Most of our friends love to drink so when we go out we end up drinking a lot some times.
I don't think you need to be drunk to have a great time. My best friend doesn't drink for personal reasons and her SO is a recovery alcoholic. We have just as much fun with them as we do with our friends who drink
ETA: We are also really lucky that we live in Manhattan and don't have to worry about driving.
