Drop off bday parties ... at 4?

DS is almost 4 and has been getting invited to his classmates' bday parties. One of the invites said " drop off optional." Is this the norm for 4? It seems young to me.

I don't feel 100% comfortable so I will hangout at the party.

No way would I ever leave my kids at 4. Heck, I hate to leave them at 6.5 and 8

I would never but some parents would drop off at that age. So as long as it says optional, I would go with my child. Otherwise my child would not go.

It's one of those arts and crafts places. I've actually been there before. It's very nice but incredibly small. I'm sure they encourage parents to leave because there is no room for them to sit (standing room only).

However, I'm glad I'm no alone in thinking it's a bit early for a drop off. Chat Icon

Re: Drop off bday parties ... at 4?

We've been invited to two 4 yr old parties that were drop-off optional this year. One, actually more than 1/2 the parents did leave! I was honestly a big shocked! I stayed for both and, honestly, if I couldn't stay, my DD wasn't going to either! Even logistics at that age are an issue - I would not want my 4 year old leaving the party to go to the bathroom herself! How can the party host run the party and take care of a bunch of 4 yr olds! But, I'm not a good one to ask because I don't leave my 6 yr old at parties either!

I wouldn't leave my kids at that age.

DD is now 5 and so far all of the parties this year with kids in her Kindergarten class the parents have stayed.

I personally didn't. But I know plenty who did, in fact many at my DD's old school and my other DD's current preschool tons of parents pick up and take home other kids. Some are comfortable with it. I know my younger one would be ok but I feel 4 is young.

Etd to add at 6 there are still more than a few parents who stay for parties. Do what you are comfortable with.

Nope. 4 is definitely too young for drop off parties, imo. There is no way they will all be properly supervised if only the parents/family of the birthday child are present. My son is 5.5 and has yet to be invited to a drop off party.

I agree with everyone else it's young. I started getting somewhat comfortable by 6-7.

However I don't agree with not being properly supervised. There may be only 12 kids with 2 parents and 2-3 staff. That's plenty.

It's just my personal opinion. Most parties I've been to have been more than 12 kids, and even with 12, I'm not personally comfortable with it. Plus, the staff at these places is mostly kids/young adults (from what I've seen), so that factors into it for me. Four year olds can get pretty rowdy.

The parents that opt to stay always have the good kids. The ones who leave typically are leaving behind their bratty kids with no supervision. From my experience, at least!

Re: Drop off bday parties ... at 4?

You know, DH took DS to a good friends DS bday party at the movies a few months ago. Most of the kids were older, 7 and 8. He said thank goodness he was there because most of the kids were dropped off and our friends were left to struggle to carry all the food and watch the little boys in the theatre. With all that's going on in the world today in public places I don't know at what age I'm going to be okay leaving DS alone.....

No, I think 4 is too young. Unless its a family party.

4...no way. I'm still not at 6, & was surprised I had 2 parents who did. I know at school they are without me....but a host parent has their hands full, & if it's a party at a public place or even a home where I may not really know the others, I'm not chancing my kids there without me.

Re: Drop off bday parties ... at 4?

I might do it at a home party, especially if I knew the family, not at a party at a "place" until older.
