dropping progesterone level... so scared... (UPDATED!!)

so i am about 6 weeks pregnant now, i found out about 2 weeks ago. i got my blood drawn at my ob's office on 6/27 and my progesterone was 21.2 and my hcg was, if i remember correctly, 360. they said the progesterone was great and hcg indicated an early pregnancy & they wanted me to come back and repeat on 7/1 just to make sure everything was going up properly.
so because of the holiday weekend, they called me w/the results just this morning. the hcg went up to 1980 but my progesterone dropped to 12.6 Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
they scheduled me for a sonogram tomorrow evening to see if there is a sac... if there is, they will start me on suppositories; if not - i guess it's over Chat Icon
i have been crying off and on all day. i feel sick. i know that women with low progesterone often take suppositories and everything turns out fine... i also know sometimes it doesn't. i am scared beyond words to go into the office tomorrow night and have the sonogram. on the one hand, i can't wait another minute to know what's going on; on the other hand - i am scared my reality will come to a screaching hault in less than 24 hours.
the medical assistant that called me was very non-chalant about it, and didn't make it a big deal... but i told her, i used to work there - i know the deal and really don't want anything sugar coated.
i read a lot of posts on here about the low progesterone/suppositories thing - but what scares me most is how much it dropped in a matter of 4 days... it's not like it just started off low. and also, it's been 4 days since that bloodwork, what if it halved itself again?
ugh i'm so scared. did anyone have this type of scenario happen? i'd like to know the outcome... good or harshChat Icon
************************************
** UPDATE ** we got home a little while ago from our appointment. it went as well as i could have hoped for, for this early in my pregnancy. the sono tech saw a sac with a yolk sac and said everything looked healthy so far. they drew blood to run my progesterone again, i will get the results tomorrow. and they started me on crinone 8% (progesterone cream suppository) to use every other night until i am 12 weeks pregnant. she said if my #'s tomorrow come back below a 10, to use it every night - but between a 10-15, i only need it every other. so fingers crossed for a steady, solid number tomorrow. and i have another sono scheduled for next friday the 15th.
thank you all so much for everything Chat Icon

Mine was originally 17 and dropped to 12 in a matter of days. The doctor put me on prometrium and I am just about 31 weeks along. Do you have pcos by chance?

Re: dropping progesterone level... so scared...

I meant to go into Parenting and clicked on Pregnancy by mistake and your post caught my eye. I had 2 prior misses before my 3rd pregnancy. Both were early and the thought was that it was progesterone related. As SOON as I found out that I was pregnant for the 3rd time, I ran to the Dr's as she instructed. I was put on progesterone very early in my pregnancy and had frequent bloodwork to keep an eye on progesterone levels. At first, they went up and then I had a drop. Oh, how my heart dropped. I for sure thought I was going to have another mis and couldn't fathom how I was going to get through a 3rd one. Fast forward....my DD will be 10 mos this Friday!!! My HCG was going up nicely all along and the key was that the progesterone didn't drop below the "normal range". It dropped, but stayed within the normal range. Like you, I previously worked for the Ob/Gyn I used and I drove myself crazy with worry. I wish you all the best - think positive!!! :) :) You're in my thoughts and prayers.

I started with suppositories, but they weren't good enough and I had to switch to shots (IVF), and I am now off of the supplements and am 22 weeks along with 3 healthy boys growing inside of me! Good Luck!!!! Chat Icon

I hope everything turns out well tonight. If you have to go on the supps that is totally fine. PLENTY of women have gone on them and proceed to have healthy pregnancies. Easier said then done, but try not too worry too much. Chat Icon Chat Icon

thank you all for your stories, kind words, insights and prayersChat Icon
it has given me hope to see and hear about women that had a lower level of prog. than i, and went on to have healthy babies or are carrying a healthy pregnancy much further along. i am just praying we get to the doctor tonight, the sono is good and they get me on the suppositories or whatever it is i need.
i can't bare the thought of anything else. having worked there, it definitely puts more worry on my shoulders... i know some doctors, books and people say 12.6 isn't horrible - that above a 9 or 10 is still good - and even the medical assistant told me that on the phone. but i know when i asked for my 1st bloodwork results, and even when i worked there - they really want your level above a 15.
fingers are crossed. and toes. and i'm praying... i'll update tonight. god willing, with good news.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My doctor told me he's happy with anything above 10. Mine was something like a 9 when I had my first beta and then my perinatologist took it and it was an 11. I think you're above 12. They'll prob put you on prometrium until like 11 or 12 weeks when the placenta takes over and be done with it. Don't worry. Try to be positive. Again, I'm 22 weeks at this point and this kid is going no where. Chat Icon

I had the same thing. mine didn't dip as low I think I started at 21 and it went to 16? they put me on progestrone suppositories. they were very easy to use with no side effects besides some discharge, and I was luckly i had very little.

I believe they only feel its a concern if your beta numbers are not doubling, or your progestrone goes below 9.

the difference between the suppostories and pills is you will not see your progestrone level go up because it doesn't go in your blood stream, the pills you do, so your number would go up

I'm pretty much in the same boat, although my numbers started off low. I was an 11 and then dropped to a 10 a couple of days later. I am 7wks now and started the suppositories two weeks ago. I am praying that they work and everything's okay. Sending you good thoughts!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
