Nobody has addressed that DR.'S Say it's a disease yet many of you disagree with them? Are your feelings just that, feelings? So far we haven't had any Dr's on here to speak about it?
My personal feelings may disgree with what it is in reality but I wouldnt mention them because I dont have the medical nackground to stand on....
Why do you who feel its not a disease think that Dr's are wrong?
I don't have 100% faith in what doctors say. I mean, of course, science is science and I am not trying to say that I am all knowing. BUT if you look at medical advice through time and the way ideas, classification, health advice, etc, changes, it makes you wonder. Just 40 years ago, doctors were RECOMMENDING that people smoke to cure nerves!
yeah but we arent talking about 40 years ago. This has been studied for say 40 years NOW...
And its not like one Dr happened along and said this, we are talking the meidcal community...who bottom line know a lot more then any of us ever could, so Im just fascinated I guess with people who dispute it.
I dont hold all that much faith myself in Dr's...but more on the lines of a smaller scale medical problem would I question, not an epidemic such addiction
I think people form opinions based on science and personal experience. Two people can read the same exact thing and interpert it completely differently.

ETA: The medical community is so diverse, you get pockets who say so many different and conflicting things.

I so agree...but thats why I asked , so far no one really said anything like "I disagee with the medical community BECAUSE..." Thats what I was looking for....
All personal opinion with nothing to back it up just leads to a long list of what a persons personal beliefs, which could be so wrong...
Like I was saying, I find it very hard to believe its a disease myself, but I have nothing to go on...

I don't think you can discount intuition and feelings completely. The medical community is divided on almost everything, you can get a ton of information to back up almost anything.

Re: Drug addiction/Alcoholism - Disease?
I 100% think that people can have addictive personalities, which is hereditary. Yes, it can be controlled, but often not until after it has become a problem.
So, yes, I'd say addictions are diseases.

Re: Drug addiction/Alcoholism - Disease?
We just made a chart in class to disgram the progression:
irresponsible behavior leads to emotionally disturbed leads to neurosis leads to psychotic behavior and disease (says my prof.)

Re: Drug addiction/Alcoholism - Disease?
I have to say this has been an interesting debate... and i do understand arguments from the other side.
It's not something I've ever really thought about until today.

Re: Drug addiction/Alcoholism - Disease?
Yes, I do think it is a disease. Some people are capable of tolerating alcohol and drugs w/out it leading to addiction....while others are not.

It's possible that emotionally disturbed leads to irresponsible behavior and not the other way around. I was on LIF instead of paying attention.

I think the difference is in how people view and use the drug. When people use it to fill a need or void is when it becomes an addiction. They turn to it as I might turn to a friend to talk, and that is the point when it becomes a necessary part of their lives.

Re: Drug addiction/Alcoholism - Disease?
I would have to agree that it is a disease. I believe that you can inherit the "gene" from a parent.
DH father was an alcholic, DH loves to drink, if he does not watch how much he drinks he will be doing the same thing. Remember people can be functional alchoholics so their is a lot of gray area. Sometimes I have to really get on DH back about it. DH was not really raised around his dad so I am more likely to say that it is not a learned behavior.

Do you think drug addiction and alcoholism are a disease? I don't buy that it is a disease, it is a nice excuse to take the responsibility off the addict. Everyone of us has to make decisions all day, every day, not all of us cop out with drugs or alcohol. I know someone stuggling with this right now and from what I see, he is trying to escape the realities of his life. Not that I can even blame him but I hate what it is doing to all around him.
Okay, i am jumping in a little late but heres a few of my thoughts. In terms of your last sentence regarding the male that you know, I have done therapy with both drug/alcohol in the psych unit of hospitals. I know it can be tough and exhausting but be sure to not let this person take you down with them. They need to seek help and not be dependent on those around them. Its always ok to help but not to be brought down with the situation. Witht that said, in terms of disease/disorder or fault...I would have to say it could be a combination BUT especially with drug/alcohol, addictive behaviors tend to be more apparent in those with other family members with these behaviors. Its more like addictive behaviors that are genetic rather then just being drug/alcohol. For example, My dad could have an addictive personality turning to cigarettes while I could be using drugs and my brother might try to stay away from all of it and he may display anxiety behaviors. I think addictive behaviors can be seen in various forms. I think everyone has a specific tolerance level for anxiety/addiction but usually there is a pattern from what Ive seen.
