I disagree. They call it the wall of shame for a reason. It shames him into hopefully never doing this again because now all his neighbors, coworkers, friends, and kids friends know. If he wasn't smart enough to not drink and drive, let him deal with the guilt. What if he had hit and killed someone? No sympathy here.

I have to say I am pretty torn about them posting the pictures for this reason.

Re: drunk driving pictures on Newsday.com......I was all for it until
I think it's a great idea. I think they should do it for all crime: robbery, rape, etc etc. Embarrass the heck out of these people, maybe it will act as a deterent for other idiots thinking of doing the same thing. I think it is about time we stand up and stop letting criminals rule the world. I think the main reason a lot of people do these crimes is because they are no real repurcussions anymore, they get away with muder (sometime literally). We need to get back some control over society!

I am not heartless. I feel bad for his children and his wife, etc..
But the fact is - he did something stupid - something that could have cost someone their LIFE. And if this helps him learn a lesson that could keep someone from being killed - then I guess it's for the greater good.
I am sure his family prefers that his picture be in there today for a DUI rather than seeing him in there for taking a life.

look at it this way.... chances are that if his father was arrested for DWI and the "wall of shame" didn't exist, hiis son probably wouldn't have been told what was going on.
Now that this "wall of shame" exists, the DRUNK DRIVER really has no chance to hide this from his son - maybe, just maybe, the embarassment his son feels will prevent both Dad (shame of embarassing his family) and Son (innocent "victim", but will see and understand the consequences of DWI) from ever drinking/driving again.

i agree with this... i do feel bad for his kids, but maybe the embarrassment his son feels will prevent HIM from ever drunk driving, too...

Re: drunk driving pictures on Newsday.com......I was all for it until
I don't think they should be posted, I think they create a real mob mentality and thats probably not good for society as a whole. I think its a bit inciteful for some groups of people. These photos are public domain anyway, anyone can see them anytime. I just worry about people who aren't so bright thinking they should take matters into their own hands...
For exampleFor example
I was looking for an example of a group of youths killed a Sikhgas station attendant who was killed by some youths who thought he was muslim but I was unable to find it.

I don't usually chime in on these issues but the problem I have with this is the pictures are for arrests and NOT convictions. While I like the deterrent these photos may provide, I have a problem with publicly humiliating people before they have been convicted. JMO

I do agree on this, whatever happened to being innocent until proven guilty?

I kind of feel the same way. I don't think I would mind as much if this photo blitz was actually a deterrant but based on the number of arrests that are posted -- it doesn't seem to be working.

But don't papers and local TV news do this with everyone? Murderers, rapist, thieves and drunk drivers who caused accidents. What is the differnece here?

The difference for me is that journalists are "suppose" to be independent. When the government does this they are advancing a public policy agenda. I'm not comfortable giving them that much power before people have actually been convicted.

i understand feeling bad for the kids---but think of it like this. isn't it better that his pic is up and he might be shamed into changing his behavior? remember he was driving drunk and his children go to school with yours.....imagine if he came to pick up his kids drunk and got into an accident with you or hurt your kids!

you do the crime, you do the time. And if that means your family has to be embarrssed by you, then so be it.
I love it.

I agree with this...
though I will say this... FEAR of being on that wall has scared me to the point where I know I will not drive even if I've had one beer... hopefully it does the same for others

I do agree, do the crime do the time etc, but these people haven't been conviceted of their crimes in a court of laws by a jury of their peers, so its not really fair.

So your saying the cop that performed the lengthy sobriety test (with sergeants present) and more then likely a breathalizer test was wrong. Some how I believe the cops made the right decision.
We also have yet to hear of a wrongfully accused person. Don't you think if someone was actually proven innocent in the end they would have gone straight to the media and/or lawyers??

Yeah cops can be wrong, even juries can be wrong. Look at all the people who were wrongly convicted of murder sitting on death row who were exonerated with the advent of DNA evidence.
But, with regard to braethelizers my understanding of the law is that if you blow over.8 you are legally drunk and not, as it used to be, presumed drunk. However, the usual way these cases are fought is by attacking the test itself, the machine (i.e. whether it was used properly, calibrated and inspected at regular intervals, etc). Don't get me wrong, I abhor drunk drivers, I just don't have that much trust in the government and don't believe people should be publicly humiliated prior to being convicted.
In fact, I think the policy itself may be unconstitutional.
