DS had an allergic reaction on Monday, can you help me figure out what caused it?
He is almost 1 yr old and I let him try a few sips of raspberry lemonade (probably not the best choice) at Olive Garden and I thought that's what did it, but the Dr. said that it was probably something that he had only once before and that the allergic reaction usually happens the second time they eat it. He's never had anything that could have been in that drink, so now I'm thinking it could be the macaroni and cheese he ate at Olive Garden??? He had that twice before, but the first time was Kraft at home and he only had 1 noodle. The other two times were at restaurants and they were not Kraft, so maybe there was something weird in it - like nutmeg? He's had cheese by itself with no problems and macaroni by itself with no problems so I am really at a loss. Should I just blame it on the raspberry lemonade? I feel like such a bad Mommy for giving it to him!

Jaidy had a horrible reaction to yogurt. It happened the first time I gave it to her. We *think*(still have to get her tested) she is allergic to milk and processed cheese. She can't have mac and cheese at all.

It's hard to tell when you are at restaurants. There is a lot of room for cross-contamination. Since you've never had a reaction to cheese or pasta before I'd guess not the mac & cheese unless they did have a random ingredient in there.
I'd call in between the lunch and dinner rushes and explain to the manager that your child had an allergic reaction after eating the mac & cheese and the raspberry lemonade and have them list the ingredients for you. Explain that you are trying to figure out what they reacted to since that's never happened before. I've found that they are usually pretty accommodating when you explain that it's an allergy.

Re: DS had an allergic reaction on Monday, can you help me figure out what caused it?
DD was diagnosed with a pretty serious milk allergy at 9 months. Once the diagnosis was confirmed, we looked back at some instances and the pieces just fell into place.
Before she'd had the reaction, she'd been given milk products a couple of times before. The first 2 times she'd gotten a little formula (I was BFing), the 3rd time was a small piece of cheese.
I noticed some fussiness the 2nd time she had formula, but attributed it to gas. When I gave her the cheese (a few weeks later), her mouth got a little splotchy and her eyes and nose started running. I called the PED and explained and they thought it sounded envirnomental (like an allergy to dust) rather than a food allergy.
2 weeks later, we gave a yogurt and she had a full-blown frightening reaction where her eyes swelled shut, she got hives and her tongue swelled.
We learned at the allergist that food allergies develop over time. A child may not develop signs of an allergy until a few or even many exposures to the allergen.
If it was a serious reaction, I'd go right to a pediatric allergist, since they can really pinpoint (even through questions) what the allergen might be.

Even if there was nutmeg in the mac & cheese (which is very common), nutmeg is not an actual nut. It is actually a seed, and has a very low incidence of allergies.
I agree with the above poster...there is so much cross contamination at restaurants, it would probably be impossible to tell what caused it. Mixing spoons touch each other, grills are used over and over, things spill.
Sorry that happened to you DC. Hopefully it won't happen again.

I've never heard of what your Dr said-my nephew has life threatening food allergies and they found out because they gave him a tiny sliver of lamb when he was about 2. He began projectile vomiting and needed an epinephrin shot. Thankfully he is now 13 and growing out of a lot of his allergies.
I would think it was the rasberry-lots of people are allergic to berries. I would take him to an allergist and have him tested and get an epi pen to carry with you just in case. Its not your fault-chances are if he has one food allergy he has others. My SIL knows a lot about this-let me know if you'd like to talk to her about it and I'll give you her e-mail

What did YOU have for dinner?
Whatever it was can contaminate the glass that your DS drank from.
My DD's both have serious food allergies. DD1 - Even if she drinks from my glass (and I've had something she is allergic too) she will have an immediate reaction.
