DS is an inclusion class for Kindergarten...

as a general education student. If you have experience as a BTDT or as a teacher, please share the pros/cons and if I need to be concerned for any reason.

There will be a general ed teacher, a special ed teacher (there full time) and I believe a special ed aide.

Thank you!!

My DD is also in an inclusion class. They haven't had any screenings yet so I am not sure how they are placed. But she is very shy and I really like that there will be two teachers (and two aides) because I think the adult support will help her. I think it's a good thing.

Thanks for the replies, ladies!

An inclusion class is when there are both general ed students and special ed students in the same class with both a gen ed teacher and a special ed teacher. I think the only way of knowing is that there would be two teachers on your child's teacher assignment.

Re: DS is an inclusion class for Kindergarten...

Just want to say that my DH teaches HS inclusion classes and the kids do great. He loves those classes. He works with a Special Ed teacher. While my husband teaches the "science" part of the class, the Special Ed teacher assists those students in need more in-depth. But there are two great teachers in the room explaining, making it "fun", etc.

I have a different perspective, and I am a Kindergarten Teacher and my own child is a year away from entering Kindergarten. I would be upset if my GE child was put in a CTT class and I'd request her to be changed. I am sure there are ones that work, don't get me wrong, but I've seen this environment first hand for many years and do feel that there is a lot of distraction for a GE child in a SN class. JMHO.

This is more likely the exception than the rule.

I wonder how that is even possible, since there could be classified kindergaten kids that are recommended for inclusion. Where do those kids go then? Out of district?

I agree. I've never heard an educator express such an opinion and it concerns me that this is her experience.

Re: DS is an inclusion class for Kindergarten...

I am a Kindergarten special education teacher, self-contained, but some of my students go to an inclusion class in the building for math or reading, and I think its great! The CTT class that they go to has two GREAT teachers and they really know how to make the setting work for everyone. They work as a team and are able to get SO MUCH done with the kids.

I also think it teaches compassion, patience, kindness and acceptance early on.

DD was in the same boat. I found it to be a great experience. There were 2 teachers & an aide. I felt like it gave the teachers to give more individual attention to students.

Re: DS is an inclusion class for Kindergarten...

Hi! I am a special education teacher that works with a general education teacher in a third grade inclusion class. Let me start by saying that an inclusion class is NOT considered a special needs class as a pp mentioned. It is a general education class point blank. Just because there are identified children in it does not make it a special needs class. In my district not just any special needs student gets placed into this class. We have a spectrum of services- 6:1:2, 12:1:1, inclusion, resource room and consultant teacher models. The children are placed in a program based upon their abilities and current needs. Therefore, the children placed into an inclusion class are there because they are able to be educated in a general education setting with the support of a special education teacher. If they needed more, they would be in a different setting.
I have had nothing but positive experiences with this model. It is a lot of work for the teachers to make sure that everyone gets what they need and that all the work gets differentiated, but it is so worth it for both types of students. The general education students get to see that there are all type of learners in this world and they feel good about themselves when they get to be positive role models for other students. I guess it depends on the disctrict, but my cousin teaches 1st grade inclusion and she even admits that some of the kids that are placed in her class should not be there. Some of them are violent and severely delayed. My son doesn't start kindergarten until next year, but because of hearing the stories from her, I'd be leary of wanting my child in an inclusion class. Again, I'm sure it is different by district, but I guess her perspective has affected my opinion of inclusion classes.

Re: DS is an inclusion class for Kindergarten...

A sincere thank you to everyone taking the time to thoughtfully respond to my post. I really appreciate it.

I'm hearing mostly positive things, which puts my mind at ease, but the thought of violence, etc. scares me! I'm hoping that is not the norm and will not be an issue. I guess there is always a chance of that even in a general ed class if there are any behavioral issues, just more of a risk in an inclusion class.

Thank you again to everyone for sharing your experiences! I appreciate everyone's feedback. Any others... please share!

Re: DS is an inclusion class for Kindergarten...

My kids go to private school, so we have no firsthand experience with inclusion classes.

However, a good friend of mine had a TERRIBLE experience when her child was placed in an inclusion class. Suffice it to say, there was a child in there who absolutely should not have been in that class, who absolutely should have been in a self-contained setting. It would have been better for the child and better for ALL the other students, both typical and identified. Everyone suffered because so much time and attention had to be focused on this one child. I don't know all the details, but I think this child's parents fought hard to have him in inclusion, even though realistically I don't think it was helpful to him at all.

Anyway, inclusion is a great concept and I think benefits everyone WHEN DONE CORRECTLY. But it definitely needs to have the right mix of children.

Non-inclusion K classes are just as likely to have kids with behavioral issues too- the schools really don't know the children yet. I'm sure they're aware of kids who get speech, etc, at the preschool level but that is probably the extent of it.

As I said, I'm pleased with my daughter's placement. I think it will be great for her and I'm impressed with my district. But I also plan to be vigilant about finding out from her how the class is, which I'd do regardless of placement.

A kid with severe enough behavioral problems to be violent usually wouldn't be in an inclusion class. It may happen that a child has an outburst or something like that, but I think that is a possibility in any classroom. Even in my school, the kids that have violent behaviors are in very restrictive environments (6:1:1, hospital schools, etc.) Generally speaking, a child who is a good candidate for inclusion is standard assessment (not severely delayed), with no significant behaviors that would disrupt a general education classroom, just a kid who could learn in a general ed. setting with a support. When we have IEP meetings for kids that we are considering inclusion for, we discuss things like behavior, aggression, current levels of performance, etc. There is a lot of thought and discussion on what placements will work for certain kids, among many qualified, professional adults. Mistakes happen and sometimes a kid ends up in the wrong class, but that is rare, and a thoughtful teacher will keep an eye on things like that.

No, this child was aggressive on a regular basis and distrupted the class constantly. She teaches in a district that doesn't have much funding for special ed. so they tend to stick those kids in the inclusion classes when they should not be. I know this is probably not the norm in most schools, but it is still something that concerns me.
