I have been there and I know how upsetting it is to hear that "A" word. Go to a neurologist, or a Developmental PED. Also you can have a Pschologist come in from EI and have him tested.

One step at a, time take a breath and try to regroup. I know it's sooo difficult when your child is struggling. You are doing the best for your DS right now by getting him the help he needs.

I know firsthand that feeling of something being wrong and the overwhelming need to protect your little boy. Just know that you are doing the best you can for him and that is so important.

I know it seems unbearable, but you WILL make it through. You are in more of a shock now than anything and that is what is hard to bear.

I hope all is well, and whatever the outcome, it is good you are looking into this early. I am sure you are devastated, but he is still your beautiful boy. But it's hard to think that their lives may be different than we imagine.
I have heard the earlier the diagnosis and treatment, the better the outcome if this is autism. Good luck and many hugs!

A mommy is never ready to hear any issues her dear little one might have.
But don't worry too much just yet. Sometimes toddlers show certain behaviors that "mimic" some behavior on the spectrum and it's not necessarily something that they are on the spectrum.

You can call The Cody Center at Stony Brook and request a full eval.
Remember, it is hard right now and you have to be your son's advocate but this is not the worst thing a mom can hear. When my nephew was diagnosed w/Autism my brother and I said to each other "Thank GOD we don't need to go to St. Jude's" and that did help him get thru those first few days when he was overwhelmed. It is scary right now but knowledge is power. And your son is lucky that his parents are going to do everything they can to help him!!!

Just because he shows some signs does not mean he is on the spectrum. I would ask for a psych. eval... They will do an ADOS or CARS and really tell you for sure.
Before my son had language he made very poor eye contact, especially with strangers. He is just language delayed, and that can sometimes look similar.
Hang in there!
I completely agree, when my ds started we thought he was on the spectrum b/c of his severe speech delay. Since he has been getting help it has made a huge difference. He still has the speech delay, but a lot of the other signs that we first thought were questionable are no longer there. Hang in there. EI does wonders!

i am still coming to terms with what lies ahead but with the support that you have all given me i dont feel so alone
